Emu Smithmines.Agriculture.The <strong>Illinois</strong> State Journal, which celebratedits Centennial November 10, 1931, was firstestablished by Josiah and Simeon Francis. TheseA.twoW. ShiptonYankee boys came up from St. Louis, determinedto start a paper where none had ever before succeeded. TheCapital City was <strong>the</strong>n a miserable inland town, connected with <strong>the</strong>outside world by only freight wagons and irregular stages. TheFrancis Bro<strong>the</strong>rs disposed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Journal in 185 5, but <strong>the</strong> paper continuedto reflect <strong>the</strong> courageous, pioneer spirit <strong>of</strong> its founders. Asin <strong>the</strong>ir day <strong>of</strong> publication, it continued to be Lincoln's mouthpiece,and during <strong>the</strong> period leading to and during <strong>the</strong> Civil War, it reflected<strong>the</strong> Union spirit. Among <strong>the</strong> notable men contributing to its columns during thisearl\- day were Edward L. Baker and his associate in <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> paper. W. 1 I.Bailhache; David L. Phillips, who owned an interest in <strong>the</strong> paper; Gen. Moses Brayman,and o<strong>the</strong>rs not always identified with <strong>the</strong> regular editorial staff. In <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> reconstructionand for years atter, <strong>the</strong> Journal was edited by Paul Selby. John Hay, secretaryto President Lincoln and later secretary <strong>of</strong> state, also served at <strong>the</strong> editorial desk. Later<strong>the</strong>re came as owners and editors, Clarence R. Paul, Lewis H. Miner, Harry F. Dorwin,S. Leigh Call, and Will McConnell. In 192 8 Col. Ira C. Copley purchased <strong>the</strong> Journal,with A. W. Shipton as general manager. The Journal is published every morning. ,\m\also has a large Sunday edition.
