Papers were read in memory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Eugene C. Brockman<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mount Sterling Message by E. A. Snively <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carlinville Enquirer; and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>late Henry Louis Clay <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> JacksonvilleCourier by Clement L. Clapp <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CarrolltonPatriot.The Secretary reported a total membership <strong>of</strong> 190 members. At <strong>the</strong> previous meeting<strong>the</strong> membership was 172. Since that meeting 13 members had been reinstated uponpayment <strong>of</strong> back dues; 22 new members were admitted; 9 dropped on account <strong>of</strong> retiringfrom <strong>the</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong> business, <strong>of</strong> whom 4 were placed upon <strong>the</strong> Honorary Roll; 2 memberswere lost by death; and 10 names were dropped for non-payment <strong>of</strong> dues. TheTreasurer reported a balance <strong>of</strong> $5 OS. 8 7.The new <strong>of</strong>ficers elected were: President, M. W. Ma<strong>the</strong>ws, Urbana Herald; VicePresidents, Clara Lyon Peters, Watseka Times; W. R. Sandham, Wyoming Post; F. C.Clark, Greenville Sun; Secretary, C. L. Clapp, Carrollton Patriot; Treasurer, George M.Tatham, Greenville Advocate; Executive Committee, C. B. Bostwick, Mattoon Gazette;Charles Holt, Kankakee Gazette; J. W. Clinton, Polo Press.Dan McKenzie, formerly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urbana Journal, delivered an historical address on"Pioneer Journalism <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>." He said:Dan McKenzie as Historian in 1884"Mr. President and Gentlemen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association: I have beenrequested by your Executive Committee to prepare a paper for this meeting upon <strong>the</strong>'Early Journalism' <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state, prior to <strong>the</strong> year 1835. The extent, scope and informationdesired, and length <strong>of</strong> time allotted me have not been stated. Therefore, that I maynot take up too much valuable time, I have briefed this paper and shall speak <strong>of</strong> buta few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early journals and <strong>the</strong>ir characteristics, as compared with <strong>the</strong> present."This is a subject that has a fascination only for those whom you are pleased todesignate as 'cranks' upon <strong>the</strong> early history, or matters and facts pertaining to <strong>the</strong> earlyhistory <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>."To me <strong>the</strong> files <strong>of</strong> an old <strong>newspaper</strong> have a peculiar fascination. In looking overits columns I see mirrored <strong>the</strong> great events <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past in a more truthful and vividform than can be portrayed by <strong>the</strong> pen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> historian.
