<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>-ATLANTA ARGUS: Established 1869 by Albion Smith. Crihfield Bros., Inc.,owners. H. Crihfield, editor.Atlanta, population, 1 169. Located in Logan County. 19 miles south <strong>of</strong> Bloomington.The Alton and Pennsylvania railroads. Agriculture.The Atlanta Argus was founded by Albion Smith in May, 18 69. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>year Mr. Smith admitted F. B. Mills as a partner and after a time Smithand Mills sold to A. W. Briggs and he to George L. Shoals. It wasduring <strong>the</strong> Shoals ownership that <strong>the</strong> Crihfield family became indentifiedwith <strong>the</strong> Argus. H. Crihfield starting in as "devil," March 25,1875, since which time, a period <strong>of</strong> 57 years, he has had a continuousactive connection with <strong>the</strong> paper. In November,1S81, Mr. Crihfield purchased <strong>the</strong> plant and in1885 Robert C. Crihfield, a younger bro<strong>the</strong>r,on reaching his majority, was admitted as apartner and took charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Minier branch<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> business, which he managed for thirtyriveyears until his death in 1921. In 1908 <strong>the</strong>business was incorporated under <strong>the</strong> corporatename <strong>of</strong> Crihfield Bros., Inc., and H. Crihrield'stwo sons, Philip A. and Robert Eugene, were admitted to ownershipand active management in <strong>the</strong> business. R. E. Crihfield died in 1925.The present <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> company are H. Crihfield, president; P. A.Crihfield, secretary and treasurer. In addition to <strong>the</strong> Atlanta Argus, p. 2\<strong>the</strong> corporation owns and publishes <strong>the</strong> Minier News, <strong>the</strong> McLeanLens, <strong>the</strong> Waynesville Record, <strong>the</strong> Stanford Star and <strong>the</strong> Armington Helper.Circulation, 8 5 0.Subscription rate: local, $1.50; foreign, $1.50.Advertising rate: local, 20c; foreign, 25c.ARGENTA REGISTER: Established 1916 by George Goldsby.T. Agriculture.The Argenta Register is a weekly periodical, which is publishedevery Thursday. Stevens, editor andpublisher since 1933.Beecher, population, 667. Located in Will County, 3 8 miles south <strong>of</strong> Chicago. C. &E. I. R.R. Butter, broom, and gun factories. Creamery.
