Located in Logan County. 19 miles south of Bloomington.The Alton and Pennsylvania railroads. Agriculture.The Atlanta Argus was founded by Albion Smith in May, 18 69. At the end of theyear Mr. Smith admitted F. B. Mills as a partner and after a time Smithand Mills sold to A. W. Briggs and he to George L. Shoals. It wasduring the Shoals ownership that the Crihfield family became indentifiedwith the Argus. H. Crihfield starting in as "devil," March 25,1875, since which time, a period of 57 years, he has had a continuousactive connection with the paper. In November,1S81, Mr. Crihfield purchased the plant and in1885 Robert C. Crihfield, a younger brother,on reaching his majority, was admitted as apartner and took charge of the Minier branchof the business, which he managed for thirtyriveyears until his death in 1921. In 1908 thebusiness was incorporated under the corporatename of Crihfield Bros., Inc., and H. Crihrield'stwo sons, Philip A. and Robert Eugene, were admitted to ownershipand active management in the business. R. E. Crihfield died in 1925.The present officers of the company are H. Crihfield, president; P. A.Crihfield, secretary and treasurer.
