Agriculture.The Woodstock Daily Sentinel now in its 77th year, was rirstt-t.iblished as a weekly paper in 1856 to support <strong>the</strong> candidacy <strong>of</strong>John C. Fremont, <strong>the</strong> first Republican candidate for President <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> United States. In 1906 <strong>the</strong> printing plants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sentinel and<strong>the</strong> Volksblatt, a local German paper, were consolidated, both <strong>newspaper</strong>sbeing published from <strong>the</strong> present location <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> DailySentinel <strong>of</strong>fice. Charles F. Renich became editor and manager <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Sentinel at this time, <strong>the</strong> ownership after <strong>the</strong> consolidation <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> papers, being expanded by <strong>the</strong> acquisition <strong>of</strong> a large group <strong>of</strong>additional investors. Some 1 5 years previous to this merger, <strong>the</strong>.Sentinel was <strong>the</strong> property <strong>of</strong> Luman T. Hoy, E. C. Jewett, lodgeC. H. Donnelly, all <strong>of</strong> Woodstock, and Judge E. T. Glennon <strong>of</strong>Chicago. In 1916 <strong>the</strong> German paper was discontinued, and <strong>the</strong>( HAIU I s 1 1\1 Mfollowing year, <strong>the</strong> Republican, a weekly competitor was purchasedand merged with <strong>the</strong> Sentinel. In 1921 <strong>the</strong> Sentinel became a daily paper. Five yearslater <strong>the</strong> reader list and goodwill <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r Woodstock paper had been merged with<strong>the</strong> Sentinel, thus causing <strong>the</strong> discontinuance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> weekly edition which had beencarried for several years. The Sentinel, which is <strong>the</strong> oldest <strong>newspaper</strong> in Nor<strong>the</strong>astern<strong>Illinois</strong>, has been under <strong>the</strong> present management for <strong>the</strong> past 26 years. Mr. Wilson remained in control <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> paperuntil 1931 when he disposed <strong>of</strong> it to <strong>the</strong> present management. TheReview is a weeklv paper, issued every Thursday. It is Democratic inits political affiliation.Everett H.
