<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>on <strong>the</strong> return trip on Tuesday morning, August 8, after an absence <strong>of</strong> two weeks.During <strong>the</strong> trip visits were made to ten cities, <strong>the</strong> longest stop being made in Salt LakeCity. A resolution was passed commending <strong>the</strong> national government on <strong>the</strong> appointment<strong>of</strong> Cadet Taylor, a past president, to a position in <strong>the</strong> government bureau <strong>of</strong> publicprinting. The usual ex<strong>press</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> appreciation was voiced for <strong>the</strong> companies, <strong>of</strong>ficialsand citizens who helped make <strong>the</strong> trip a pleasant and pr<strong>of</strong>itable venture. The IroquoisTimes later published a souvenir booklet <strong>of</strong> 64 pages detailing <strong>the</strong> happenings on <strong>the</strong> trip.The eighteenth annual meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association was held at <strong>the</strong>Palmer House, Chicago, on February 14, 15, and 16, 188 3. The meeting was called toorder by E. A. Snively <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carlinville Enquirer, Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Executive Committee,<strong>the</strong> President and all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vice Presidents being absent.In <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> President C. B. Bostwick <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mattoon Gazette, his address wasread by <strong>the</strong> Reverend J. W. Crane <strong>of</strong> Nokomis. Elizabeth Boynton Harbert <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Chicago Inter Ocean read a paper on "The Ideal Journal."W. J. Mize <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sullivan Progress spoke on "Does Canvassing Pay?" H. E.Partridge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Waukegan Gazette read an essay on "The Relation <strong>of</strong> Poetry to <strong>the</strong>Waste-Basket." The annual address was given by M. W. Ma<strong>the</strong>ws <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urbana Heraldon "The Coming Country Editor." E. B. Buck <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kankakee Herald read a paper on"The Apprenticeship System." Clara Lyon Peters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Watseka Times presented herviews upon "Women in Journalism."William Boll <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greenville Sun spoke on <strong>the</strong> following topic: "Country CorrespondenceAbsolutely Necessary to Newspaper Success." E. B. Buck, Kankakee, reada paper <strong>of</strong> L. C. Glessner, Carlinville Enquirer, who was absent, on "One Thing Notto Do"—this admonition was "Not to aid in building up <strong>the</strong> city <strong>press</strong> at <strong>the</strong> expense<strong>of</strong> your publications." Some discussion was held on <strong>the</strong> subject, a majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> membersagreeing that <strong>the</strong> announcements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cheap city weeklies should be inserted onlyupon <strong>the</strong> payment <strong>of</strong> full advertising rates, and one or two members went far<strong>the</strong>r andinsisted that <strong>the</strong>y should not be inserted even if paid for. The prices to be charged forforeign advertising were also incidentally brought up and discussed, <strong>the</strong> general tenor<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> remarks being that we charge too little for our outside advertising compared with<strong>the</strong> prices paid by home advertising.Charles Holt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kankakee Gazette, <strong>the</strong> oldest member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association, readan address on "Fifty Years <strong>of</strong> Journalism." Charles E. Crandall <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chicago WestEnd Advocate told <strong>the</strong> Association "How to Run a Chicago Newspaper."The Secretary reported a total membership <strong>of</strong> 172 members. The Treasurer reporteda balance on hand <strong>of</strong> $175.87.The <strong>of</strong>ficers elected were: President, J. W. Clinton, Polo Press; Vice Presidents,Eliza Bowman, Chicago Home Visitor; M. B. Castle, Sandwich Argus; Curt Heinfelden,Belleville Zeitung; Secretary, Fred L. Alles, Pontiac Sentinel; Treasurer, George M.Tatham, Greenville Advocate; Executive Committee, C. B. Bostwick, Mattoon Gazette;Charles Holt, Kankakee Gazette; W. M. Kennedy, Dixon Sun. H. A. Coolidge, LitchfieldMonitor, Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Permanent Committee on Spelling Reform, made areport, stating that <strong>the</strong> committee favored a change in spelling, <strong>the</strong> first step recommendedbeing in relation to vowels in impure diphthongs.A discussion was held on apprentices, and on <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> using co-operativesheets.48
