B. Castle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sandwich Argus gave an entertaining address on summerexcursions. Miscellaneous business occupied <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> morning session.A part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon was given over to an outing at Jockey's Park. The tripto <strong>the</strong> park was made on street cars at <strong>the</strong> expense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> street car company and <strong>the</strong>entertainment at <strong>the</strong> park was provided by <strong>the</strong> type founders. The formal part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>afternoon program consisted <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> recitation <strong>of</strong> two poems by a Miss Bobett <strong>of</strong> Pittsfieldand an exhortation on <strong>the</strong> noble mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country <strong>press</strong> by Mrs. Harbert <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Chicago Inter Ocean. Mrs. Harbert, on request <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ga<strong>the</strong>ring, recited "TheOne-Hoss Shay."In <strong>the</strong> evening <strong>the</strong> members attended <strong>the</strong> play at <strong>the</strong> Grand Opera House as guests<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> management. Tuesday morning <strong>the</strong> party repaired to <strong>the</strong> Goodrich docks at <strong>the</strong>foot <strong>of</strong> Michigan avenue by omnibus and <strong>the</strong>re took a company steamer to Milwaukeeand Manitowoc. At Milwaukee <strong>the</strong> party was given a brief trip about <strong>the</strong> city and atManitowoc an opportunity for visiting and fishing was arranged. The return trip wasmade during <strong>the</strong> night and <strong>the</strong> party reached Chicago on Friday morning. This concluded<strong>the</strong> excursion and meeting and as <strong>the</strong> Chicago papers observed, <strong>the</strong> membersproceeded to "distribute <strong>the</strong>mselves."1882The seventeenth annual meeting was held February 16, 17, 18, 18 82, at Springfieldand was called to order on Wednesday evening, February 16, by President Charles Holtin <strong>the</strong> Senate Chamber <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Capitol.E. A. Snively, for Springfield, :: 'delivered <strong>the</strong> address <strong>of</strong> welcome praising <strong>the</strong> <strong>press</strong>and <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Springfield. M. B. Castle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sandwich Argus responded. PresidentHolt <strong>the</strong>n delivered his presidential address. In it he emphasized <strong>the</strong> social benefits <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>press</strong> organization. Toward <strong>the</strong> close he said:". . . let me congratulate you on <strong>the</strong> prosperity <strong>of</strong> our Association. Never wasits membership confined more closely to those who are entitled to compose it and neverwere its prospects more encouraging. ... It is truly worthy <strong>of</strong> our best efforts toimprove and perpetuate."The Thursday morning session was opened with <strong>the</strong> seating <strong>of</strong> members and <strong>the</strong>annual address by C. B. Bostwick <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mattoon Gazette on "The Press, a Great Factorin Political <strong>History</strong>." J. J. Anderson <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nashville Democrat <strong>the</strong>n presented a paperon "The Law <strong>of</strong> Libel and Its Relation to <strong>the</strong> Press."A report on reform in spelling was received from a committee appointed at <strong>the</strong>previous convention.On motion a committee was appointed to investigate <strong>the</strong> possible revision <strong>of</strong> libellaws. It consisted <strong>of</strong> J. J. Anderson <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nashville Democrat; M. W. Ma<strong>the</strong>ws <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Urbana Herald; J. B. Bradwell <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chicago Legal News; H. W. Clendenin <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Springfield State Register; E. B. Buck <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kankakee Herald.An invitation to a banquet tendered by <strong>the</strong> citizens <strong>of</strong> Springfield was acceptedwith thanks.•Snively had talcn a political appointment in Springfield and was making his residence <strong>the</strong>:46
