George Burt, for over sixty years, was owner and editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Henry Republican,which later consolidated with <strong>the</strong> News. J. E. C. Fred Lamar, editor andproprietor.Hardin, population 732. Situated on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> river in Calhoun County, about30 miles northwest <strong>of</strong> Alton. East Hardin has <strong>the</strong> nearest railroadand ex<strong>press</strong> station. Agriculture and horticulture. The territorynear Llardin is particularly noted for its extensive apple orchards.When in bloom in <strong>the</strong> spring, <strong>the</strong>se form one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> outstandingbeauty spots <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>.The Calhoun Herald was first established by a stock company,with John Lammy as editor. In 1876 <strong>the</strong> plant was sold to Argustand Keating; in 1879 Greathouse and Argust were editors and publishers,and in 1880 <strong>the</strong> late James McNabb was editor. It was <strong>the</strong>nsold to T. J. Shelby, who was editor until 1890. From 1890 until1894 J. D. Rose was editor and proprietor. H. M. Cornick, 1894-95; Charles Lamar 1895-1902. Cornick, who was also publisher<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Calhoun Times, established in 1901, bought <strong>the</strong> Heraldin 1902 and combined <strong>the</strong> two papers as <strong>the</strong> Calhoun Times Herald.In 1903 Charles H. Lamar bought <strong>the</strong> entire plant and changed <strong>the</strong> name back to <strong>the</strong>Calhoun Herald. At <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> Chas. H. Lamar in 1930, <strong>the</strong> paper was edited by C. FredLamar, son, and A. D. Campbell, son-in-law, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deceased. Now it is edited and publishedby C. The Republican-Record, a weekly edition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Evening Record, is published at <strong>the</strong>Record <strong>of</strong>fice, and is issued every Thursday.Circulation, 1120.«'.
