Agriculture.The Mason County Democrat was first established by McKenzieand Roberts, as <strong>the</strong> Mason County Herald and sold in 18 53 toO. H. Wright. He was succeeded by E. L. Grubb and Stout andW'eeden, Stout later becoming <strong>the</strong> sole owner. From 1S59-1861<strong>the</strong> paper was known as <strong>the</strong> Squatter Sovereign. When it was purchasedby John B. Wright in 1861 <strong>the</strong> name was changed to <strong>the</strong>Post; under <strong>the</strong> ownership <strong>of</strong> S. Weeden <strong>the</strong> paper became <strong>the</strong>True Unionist; and with W. W. Stout as editor <strong>the</strong> name was R. Rov Bruningagain changed, this time to <strong>the</strong> Volunteer. These papers eventuallywere discontinued or consolidated with <strong>the</strong> Democrat Clarion. The Mason CountyDemocrat was so named by Mounts and Murdock and has retained this caption up to<strong>the</strong> present day. Previous owners <strong>of</strong> this paper have included S. K. Stro<strong>the</strong>r, Mat<strong>the</strong>wBoll.in. John A. Melhop and S. A. Murdock. This paper is a weekly publication, issuedevery Friday.
