Bridge and ferry to West Quincy. Important manufacturing andcommercial center. Flour mills; brick and stove works; foundries.Elevator, pump, air com<strong>press</strong>or, incubator, store fixtures, stock food,egg case, paper, furniture, trunk, and lime manufactories. <strong>Illinois</strong>State Sailors' and Soldiers' Home.The first paper to be established in Quincy was <strong>the</strong> BountyLand Register, which was founded in <strong>the</strong> early nineteenth century.In 1836, John H. Pettit, an ardent Quincy booster, purchased thispaper and changed <strong>the</strong> name to <strong>the</strong> Quincy Argus and Bounty LandRegister. In 1841 <strong>the</strong> name became <strong>the</strong> Quincy Herald, which itremained until <strong>the</strong> consolidation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Herald-Whig and Journal.The Herald became a daily in 1SU). In 1891 Charles L. Miller.Edmond M. Botsford, and Hadley J.Eaton be-C. F. Eichenauir came <strong>the</strong> publishers. When Mr. Miller later left<strong>the</strong> paper, Botsford and Eaton remained as publishersfor nearly 2 5 years. The paper became an evening editionduring 1893, later printing a morning and evening paper. TheQuincy Whig was established in 1838 by three young lawyers, MaiorH. Sullivan, Nehemiah Bushnell, and A. Johnson. The Whig becamea daily in 18 52, <strong>the</strong> first edition printed being a six-columnfour-page paper. The Republican, founded in 18 57 was consolidatedwith <strong>the</strong> Whig <strong>the</strong> following year, <strong>the</strong> paper <strong>the</strong>n being known as<strong>the</strong> Quincy Whig and Republican. The firstevening edition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Whig was publishedApril 9, 1860; in 1868 <strong>the</strong> paper became a morningpublication again; and in 1873 changed backA. O. I.1NI>S/\Yto an evening edition. Later it again became a morning paper. TheWhig was taken over by a stock company in 1881, and in December1915 <strong>the</strong> entire stock was sold to A. O. Lindsay, director <strong>of</strong> sales.'nd co-publisher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present publication. It was during <strong>the</strong>turbulent political period following <strong>the</strong> assassination <strong>of</strong> PresidentGarfield, that <strong>the</strong> Quincy Journal was founded in 188 3, by JamesH. Richardson and H. N. Wheeler. In 188 8 <strong>the</strong> Quincy Daily Newswas purchased by <strong>the</strong> Journal. Mr. Wheeler was for many yearsRa\ M Oakmanaging director and editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Journal, and at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong>his death in 1916 was sole owner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> company. Upon his death,<strong>the</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong> was placed in <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> trustees, with Mr. Wheeler's son, J. R. Wheeler,as manager <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> business. The Whig Company purchased <strong>the</strong> Journal in 192 and forsix years <strong>the</strong> paper was known as <strong>the</strong> Whig-Journal. The Whig- Journal and Heraldwere consolidated June 1, 1926, and <strong>the</strong> paper is now published by a corporation,Quincy Newspapers, Incorporated. The Herald-Whig publishes three papers—one anevening paper for <strong>the</strong> local readers, a morning paper for <strong>the</strong> rural districts, and a Sundaypaper.
