Grain and live stock farming.The Sentinel is <strong>the</strong> successor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eagle established 1876 byJohn S. Harper. This paper was for a while conducted by A. F.Smith who removed it to Virginia, <strong>Illinois</strong>, starting <strong>the</strong> TemperanceBugle at Ashland, which continued until 1879. In <strong>the</strong> summer<strong>of</strong> this year <strong>the</strong> News was started, with John J. Smith as <strong>the</strong>editor until 1880, when he moved <strong>the</strong> plant to Naples, <strong>Illinois</strong>.A. E. Mick started <strong>the</strong> Sentinel with an entirely new outfit, sellingin 18X4 to S. D. McCaulley & Co. In June, 1889, <strong>the</strong> plant waspurchased by I. H. Stanley and in September, 1896, was sold toW. G. Mann. In December <strong>of</strong> that year, Mr. Mann took in hisbro<strong>the</strong>r, I. N.
