Bostwick, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mattoon Gazette, revealed <strong>the</strong>fact that in 1877 forty-seven new members were admitted, bringing <strong>the</strong> membershiproll to a total <strong>of</strong> 18 0. O<strong>the</strong>r indications <strong>of</strong> progress cited were <strong>the</strong> representatives <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Association in <strong>the</strong> Legislature, assuring <strong>the</strong> requests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association a readierhearing, and <strong>the</strong> prompt declarations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association upon <strong>the</strong> abuse <strong>of</strong> railroad passes.The first topic for discussion, "Amateur Printing," was introduced bv a paper bvColonel W. H. Haskell, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Amboy Journal. At <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> his paper, ColonelHaskell <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>the</strong> following resolution:"Resoh ed, That this Association deems it a duty <strong>of</strong> dealers in printing materials toco-operate with <strong>the</strong> legitimate <strong>press</strong>, in its efforts to abolish <strong>the</strong> amateur printinginterest." 1 "A lively discussion followed; L. V. Taft, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Salem Advocate; O. S. Reed, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Edwardsville Republican, and o<strong>the</strong>rs upheld Colonel Haskell in his views; M. R. Magic,<strong>of</strong> Sangamon; and E. A. Snively, <strong>of</strong> Carlinville, were in favor <strong>of</strong> "free trade" and opposed<strong>the</strong> measure.Colonel Haskell <strong>the</strong>n moved that all <strong>the</strong> resolutions as to amateur printing be referredto a special committee <strong>of</strong> five, which motion was adopted. The chair named <strong>the</strong>following: Colonel W. H. Haskell, Amboy Journal; L. V. Taft, Salem Advocate; |. W.Fletcher, Centralia Sentinel; L. C. Bruce, Washburn News; and E. D. Conley, WilmingtonAdvocate. This committee subsequently submitted <strong>the</strong> following report which wasadopted:"1. We do not deem it advisable to ask legislative protection."2. That we endorse <strong>the</strong> action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late (recent) Type Founders convention inCleveland in deprecating sales to amateur printers who work for pav, and we confidentlvlook to <strong>the</strong>m as possessing <strong>the</strong> power to rid <strong>the</strong> regular craft <strong>of</strong> such unskilled competition."3. That we regard it as justifiable self-protection and for <strong>the</strong> true interest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>whole people that we trade only with founders, dealers and auxiliary publishers whoencourage <strong>the</strong> regular printer, and will not knowingly aid amateur printing for pav."4. That we invite co-operation <strong>of</strong> all members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> craft, individually or inorganization."E. B. Buck, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Charleston Courier, <strong>of</strong>lercd <strong>the</strong> following resolution which wasadopted by unanimous vote:"Resoh ed, That <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> this Association be instructed to correspond with<strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>press</strong> <strong>association</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> different states, in regard to taking someaction toward inducing founders to adopt a uniform standard <strong>of</strong> tvpe, in both body andheight.
