Agriculture.The Shelby County Leader was first established as <strong>the</strong> Okaw,<strong>the</strong> present name having been adopted in Sept. 1863. T. B. Shoaff,one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest printers and publishers in <strong>the</strong> country, purchased^flV ^^^_^B''"' Leadei in 1900, and was activel) engaged until his death. The^fc| ~-1 fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> T. B. Shoaff, Sr., purchased <strong>the</strong> Okaw and changedits name to <strong>the</strong> Prairie Flower in 1842. In 18 52 <strong>the</strong> paper wasknown as <strong>the</strong> Shelbyville Banner, and was owned by William A.T. B. ShoaffCochran. P. L. Shutt purchased it in 18 59 and called it <strong>the</strong> OkawPatriot, until 1863. W. A. Trower again re-named <strong>the</strong> publication,as <strong>the</strong> Shelby County Leader. For a brief space, under <strong>the</strong> management <strong>of</strong> George R.Wendling, <strong>the</strong> name was changed to <strong>the</strong> Central <strong>Illinois</strong> Times, but again became <strong>the</strong> ShelbyCounty Leader under Rufus Sumerlin in 1868. W. A. Trower purchased <strong>the</strong> paper againin 1871, followed by Valle Harold in 1895, who was succeeded by George V. Mechler in1899. The Shelby County Leader is strictly Democratic in political affiliation, givingnotable support to William Jennings Bryan when he ran for <strong>the</strong> presidency in 1908.
