Agriculture.One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first papers known to have been published at Sidneywas <strong>the</strong> Signal which was owned by J. A. Garret and issued itsfirst edition in 1S79. The Sidney Independent was started in 1883by B. L. Jakeway, who sold <strong>the</strong> paper to Theodore Gerald, who inturn sold it to "Doc" Carpenter. The original forerunner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Times was <strong>the</strong> Sidney By-Way, established by Mont Robinson,assisted by his daughter Ida Robinson Cass. Later <strong>the</strong> paper waspublished by Mrs. Eva R. Cass who sold it in 1896 to T. E. Greene.In 1899 J. A. Noble was publishing <strong>the</strong> paper, assisted part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>time by Roy L. Murphy. J. F. Stevens was <strong>the</strong> next owner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>By-Way, selling out his interest to Dentan Bro<strong>the</strong>rs in 19111.I. D. Dentan until 1906, when he sold his interest to hisbro<strong>the</strong>r. L. L. Dentan was in charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Times until 1911, when he sold <strong>the</strong>paper to O. D. Stiles. A year later J.S. Motfitt took over <strong>the</strong> Times, publishing it until1915, when Fred H.
