<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Diri.ctory and <strong>History</strong>swift-modern mercuries <strong>of</strong> automobility and telepublicity, in this tele-victorian age;(as I have <strong>of</strong>ten called it,—<strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> telegraph and <strong>the</strong> telephone, or tele-radio andtele-vision,) and above all <strong>the</strong> tele-printed word which is <strong>the</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong>."These selected for this high service, as I have said, must know how to tell <strong>the</strong>truth and <strong>the</strong>y have to do it with words in cold type. Dr. Samuel Johnson said, quotingsome one before him, that he was not so lost in lexicography as not to know that wordswere only <strong>the</strong> daughters <strong>of</strong> men while deeds were sons <strong>of</strong> heaven. But after all, it isonly by <strong>the</strong> daughters <strong>of</strong> earth that <strong>the</strong> sons <strong>of</strong> Heaven get born. In <strong>the</strong> 'Terrible Meek'<strong>the</strong> dramatist, Charles Rann Kennedy, presents a scene in which a cross is dimly seenin <strong>the</strong> background and in <strong>the</strong> foreground an English Tommy and an English captainare shown in conversation. The Tommy is saying that it is too bad that one shouldcome to this just for <strong>the</strong> saying <strong>of</strong> a few words. 'Words, words,' said <strong>the</strong> captain,'words are <strong>the</strong> most powerful things in <strong>the</strong> world. All <strong>the</strong> good or bad that gets donein <strong>the</strong> world is done by words.' Truly in <strong>the</strong> beginning was <strong>the</strong> word, but it will bewith man to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> time, that is, until God stops speaking to men; until <strong>the</strong> reporterjournalist has filed his last copy, and <strong>the</strong> editor has made his last comment, until <strong>the</strong>last edition has gone to <strong>press</strong> and Gabriel's trumpet has been heard by radio around<strong>the</strong> earth."The guests <strong>of</strong> honor at <strong>the</strong> dedication were: members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> families and associates <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> men memorialized; executive heads <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> publications on which <strong>the</strong>se men worked;donors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> busts and memorials; <strong>the</strong> Governor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>; <strong>the</strong> LieutenantGovernor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>; members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><strong>Illinois</strong>; <strong>the</strong> President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>; <strong>the</strong> President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong>Chicago; presidents and <strong>of</strong>ficial representatives <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r universities; a representative <strong>of</strong>Colby College, Waterville, Maine (<strong>the</strong> alma mater <strong>of</strong> Elijah Parish Lovejoy); <strong>the</strong> mayor<strong>of</strong> Champaign and <strong>the</strong> mayor <strong>of</strong> Uibana; guest speakers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixty-fifth annual meeting<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association.Members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Past Presidents' Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association; <strong>of</strong>ficers<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association; <strong>the</strong> secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Inland Daily Press Association; <strong>the</strong>editor-in-chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> D.
