He was elected to <strong>the</strong> Hall October 12, 1928—Election 1.He was educated at public schools and at Phillips Andover Academy. When his fa<strong>the</strong>rdied in 1873 Lawson took over management <strong>of</strong> certain property which included <strong>the</strong>plant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Daily Skandinaven. In this plant Melville E. Stone launched <strong>the</strong>Chicago Daily News on Christmas day in 1875. After a few months Stone sold aninterest in <strong>the</strong> paper to Lawson and Stone remained as editor. In 1881 <strong>the</strong> morningedition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> News was launched, to be known after a short time as <strong>the</strong> Record. WhenStone left <strong>the</strong> News in 1888 Lawson became editor as well as publisher and he continuedso through thirty-seven years <strong>of</strong> distinguished service to his city, country and <strong>newspaper</strong>.His importance in <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Associated Press was second onlyto that <strong>of</strong> Melville E. Stone and he served as president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> organization during much<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period in which Stone was manager. He received <strong>the</strong> honorary degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor<strong>of</strong> Laws from Columbia University and <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Michigan."Joseph Meharry Medill"Joseph Meharry Medill was born at New Brunswick, Canada, April 6, 1S23,and died at San Antonio, Texas, March 16, 1899. He was elected to <strong>the</strong> Hall October12, 1928—Election 2. He was educated in public schools and at Massillon (Ohio)Academy. He took up <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> law, was admitted to <strong>the</strong> bar and began to practice.Journalism drew him away from <strong>the</strong> bar and he gave up his legal work to begin <strong>the</strong>study <strong>of</strong> journalism in a country <strong>newspaper</strong> plant. From 1849 to 18 54 he was engagedin <strong>newspaper</strong> work in Ohio. He <strong>the</strong>n went to Chicago and became managing editor<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chicago Tribune. From that time until his death he was active in <strong>the</strong> managementand direction <strong>of</strong> Tribune policy, first as managing editor, <strong>the</strong>n as editor, andfinally as publisher. His control <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tribune dated from 1874. Medill served <strong>the</strong>city <strong>of</strong> Chicago as mavor immediately after <strong>the</strong> Chicago fire. He was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>founders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republican party and did much to 'bring forth Lincoln from comparativeobscurity and elect him president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States.' "Elijah Parish Lovejoy"Elijah Parish Lovejoy was born at Albion, Maine, November 9, 1802, and diedat Alton, <strong>Illinois</strong>, November 7, 1837. He was elected to <strong>the</strong> Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame October 12,1928—Election 3. He was graduated at <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> his class from Waterville College,Waterville, Maine, in 1826. The following year he came we>t and taught school for ashort time in St. Louis. He <strong>the</strong>n became editor <strong>of</strong> a Whig paper but gave it up to returneast and study <strong>the</strong>ology at Princeton. He was licensed as a preacher in 1S3 3. A yearlater his friends induced him to start a weekly paper in St. I ouis. He undertook publication<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Observer. Due to his fearless and uncompromising stand against op<strong>press</strong>ion<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slaves popular feeling against him was stirred up. His <strong>press</strong>es and types weredestroyed. He moved to Alton, <strong>Illinois</strong>, and published <strong>the</strong> paper <strong>the</strong>re for a time. Hecould not escape mob feeling, however, and he was shot to death trying to protect hisfourth <strong>press</strong> from destruction."Henry Wilson Clendenin"Henry Wilson Clendenin was born at Schellsburg, Pennsylvania, August 1, 1838,and died at Springfield, <strong>Illinois</strong>, July 18, 1927. He was elected to <strong>the</strong> Hall October 12,305
