<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>"Chain stores are union stores," said S. P. Preston, Gillespie News, following Mr.Schulte's talk. "Therefore, <strong>the</strong>y have union hours for employees. They hire home people,and <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> biggest advertisers. I receive from $70 to $80 in advertising in a monthfrom <strong>the</strong> chain stores but I have not received $80 from a home-owned grocery store in<strong>the</strong> last five years.""The chain stores are taking money out <strong>of</strong> town. Yes, but so are <strong>the</strong> public utilitycompanies.""In Danville," stated John H. Harrison, "<strong>the</strong> chain stores forced <strong>the</strong> home-ownedstores to improve conditions in <strong>the</strong>ir own stores, and to doll up." He advocated chainstoredevelopment.Homer B. Clemmons, Blue Island Sun-Standard, advocated <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> one-third <strong>of</strong>one per cent <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>its to be turned over for community welfare. "If all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chainstores adopted a like policy <strong>the</strong>re would be turned over by <strong>the</strong> chain-store corporationsa total <strong>of</strong> from 20 to 3 5 million dollars, annually."George Chapin, secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Urbana Association <strong>of</strong> Commerce, declared that<strong>the</strong> chain stores were increasing local bank prosperity, which will in turn be <strong>the</strong> means<strong>of</strong> greatly increasing advertising in <strong>the</strong> future.Elmo Scott Watson, Publisher's Auxiliary, Chicago, declared that he was for <strong>the</strong>chain stores when <strong>the</strong>y forced <strong>the</strong> local home-owned store to be up-to-date and toadvertise.L. M. Wood, editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Flora Journal-Record, stated that <strong>the</strong> chain store is ascientific method <strong>of</strong> modern merchandising. "The local merchants must wake up andget a real system <strong>of</strong> advertising, before <strong>the</strong>y can expect to compete with <strong>the</strong> chainstore," he said. He advised <strong>the</strong> merchants to find out what was going on in <strong>the</strong>ir hometowns before howling about <strong>the</strong> chain store.The <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association went on record as favoring an Audit Bureau <strong>of</strong>Circulations for all <strong>newspaper</strong>s, and recommend that <strong>the</strong> president appoint a committeeto investigate <strong>the</strong> situation and report its findings at <strong>the</strong> next meeting.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Lawrence W. Murphy, director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Journalism, was honoredby <strong>the</strong> convention, when a resolution was drawn up by <strong>the</strong> editors complimenting himon his efforts in "bringing about <strong>the</strong> desired results in <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Journalism at <strong>the</strong>University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> being recognized as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best schools <strong>of</strong> its kind in <strong>the</strong>country."The convention also resolved that a committee be appointed to study fire insuranceand its prevailing conditions and report to <strong>the</strong> next meeting; also it extended appreciationfor <strong>the</strong> tea, <strong>the</strong>atre party and entertainment.Two new members on <strong>the</strong> Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame committee were named: A. L. Bowen <strong>of</strong>Springfield to succeed himself, and A. A. Raboin, Chatsworth Plaindealer, to succeedJ. E. Dertinger, president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>.The new <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong> were: President, J. E. Dertinger, Bushnell Record;Vice Presidents, Howe V. Morgan, Sparta News-Plaindealer, also president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Illinois</strong> Editorial Association; Gerry D. Scott, Wyoming Post-Herald; W. C.Fairwea<strong>the</strong>r, McLeansboro Times; Secretary, H. L. Williamson, United States Publisher,Springfield; Treasurer, C. R. Denson, Minonk News-Dispatch; Executive committee,S. P. Preston, Gillespie News; John H. Harrison, Danville Commercial-News; John M.Sheets, Oblong Oracle; Paul R. Goddard, Washington Reporter; C. S.
