<strong>Illinois</strong> N'iuspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>Announcement was made that <strong>the</strong> Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame committee, on advice from WalterStrong <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chicago Daily News, had engaged Lorado Taft to model <strong>the</strong> bust <strong>of</strong>Victor F. Lawson, former publisher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chicago Daily News. Oskar J.V. Hansen,Chicago sculptor, had signed a contract with <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong> through H. L. Williamson,secretary, for <strong>the</strong> modeling <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bust <strong>of</strong> Elijah Parish Lovejoy, former abolitionisteditor <strong>of</strong> Alton. Colonel Robert McCormick <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chicago Tribune, was makingarrangements for <strong>the</strong> bust <strong>of</strong> Joseph Medill, former editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chicago Tribune.The sculptor for <strong>the</strong> bust <strong>of</strong> Henry W. Clendenin, former publisher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>State Register, Springfield, had not <strong>the</strong>n been selected.The busts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> four editors selected for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>' editors Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame wereto be placed in <strong>the</strong> reading room <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> library at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> for <strong>the</strong>present. Later <strong>the</strong>y would be transferred to <strong>the</strong> journalism school which was planning<strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> a new building.Two names carried over from <strong>the</strong> annual meeting <strong>the</strong> previous fall were consideredby <strong>the</strong> Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame committee. They were D. W. Barkley, Fairfield, pioneer editor<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wayne County Press, who did much to sup<strong>press</strong> lawlessness and support <strong>the</strong>hard road movement in sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Illinois</strong>, and W. O. Davis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BloomingtonPantagraph.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Lawrence W. Murphy, head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school <strong>of</strong> journalism at <strong>the</strong> University<strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> and a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame committee, <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> threemen he considered worthy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> honor: Melville E. Stone, founder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AssociatedPress; Harvey W. Scott, editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Portland Oregonian for forty years; and EdwardW. Scripps, founder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scripps-Howard chain <strong>of</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> Newspaper EnterpriseAssociation, Science Service, and <strong>the</strong> United Press.Nominations <strong>of</strong> editors for <strong>the</strong> Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame were postponed until <strong>the</strong> annualmeeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> <strong>the</strong> following fall.The committee on resolutions recommended that <strong>the</strong>reafter when any particularfavor has been shown <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong> <strong>the</strong> secretary be instructed to write a personalletter to all persons who have responded to <strong>the</strong> request and on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole<strong>association</strong> extend to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> sincere thanks and appreciation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>.Early in April twenty-five students at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>took <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionalcertificate examination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association, writing on <strong>the</strong> various sectionsfor sixteen hours. Seven <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> twenty-rive qualified to work out <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>irexamination on <strong>the</strong> "interneship" basis. The o<strong>the</strong>rs passed on various parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>examination and qualified for later examination.The following article about Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Illinois</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong>s is taken from <strong>the</strong> UnitedStates Publisher <strong>of</strong> November 1929."An <strong>association</strong> <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Illinois</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong>s, known as 'Egypt's AssociatedDailies,' was recently formed at a meeting held in Benton, and plans an advertisingcampaign for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> boosting <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state, known asEgypt, and at <strong>the</strong> same time calling attention <strong>of</strong> national advertisers to <strong>the</strong> field."Papers included in <strong>the</strong> organization, as tentatively agreed upon at <strong>the</strong> formationmeeting were: Cairo Citizen, Benton News, Centralia Sentinel, Carbondale Free Press,DuQuoin Call, Eldorado Journal, Harrisburg Register, Marion Republican, MountVernon Register-News, Murphysboro Independent, Lawrenceville Record and MountCarmel Republican-Register.287
