Tufford, Secretary <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Inland Daily Press Association, Clinton, Iowa, gave <strong>the</strong> final talk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoonsession on <strong>the</strong> subject, "Why Every Newspaper Man in <strong>the</strong> State Should be an ActiveMember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association."About 300 were present Thursday evening at <strong>the</strong> banquet in <strong>the</strong> Louis XVI room<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hotel Sherman. J. E. Dertinger, Bushnell Record, was toastmaster.William D. Saltiel, <strong>the</strong> city attorney <strong>of</strong> Chicago, welcomed <strong>the</strong> editors to <strong>the</strong>city. Mrs. Lenora Lee Tufford gave a dramatic reading. Congressman William E. Hull,Peoria, made <strong>the</strong> principal address <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> evening on "Flood Control." Geraldine MaudeClemmons, daughter <strong>of</strong> Mr. and Mrs. Homer Clemmons, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Blue Island Sun-Standard, presented a Colonial sketch in costume and also a reading, "Difficulties inPracticing." Alex Christianson, pr<strong>of</strong>essional entertainer, proved popular with <strong>the</strong> guests.A. A. Raboin, Chatsworth Plaindealer, gave a reading in <strong>the</strong> French-Canadian dialect.After <strong>the</strong> banquet <strong>the</strong> members and <strong>the</strong>ir guests visited <strong>the</strong> Chicago Tribune where<strong>the</strong>y were taken through <strong>the</strong> plant and saw a metropolitan daily "in <strong>the</strong> making."The trip through <strong>the</strong> great plant was arranged through <strong>the</strong> courtesy <strong>of</strong> Colonel RobertR. McCormick.On Friday morning <strong>the</strong> first item on <strong>the</strong> program was a trip through <strong>the</strong> plant<strong>of</strong> R. R. Donnelley & Sons, <strong>the</strong> "Lakeside Press." Homer B. Clemmons, Blue IslandSun-Standard, was in charge <strong>of</strong> this tour. For those who did not care to make <strong>the</strong>trip to <strong>the</strong> Donnelley plant o<strong>the</strong>r excursions around Chicago were planned and carriedout. Some members went to <strong>the</strong> stockyards; ano<strong>the</strong>r group to <strong>the</strong> Western ElectricCompany at Hawthorne; ano<strong>the</strong>r to Sears, Roebuck & Co., and a last group on a generaltour which included <strong>the</strong> Art Institute, <strong>the</strong> Field Museum, <strong>the</strong> public library, <strong>the</strong> GarfieldPark conservatory, <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Trade, <strong>the</strong> ghetto, and o<strong>the</strong>r points <strong>of</strong> interest.The Friday afternoon session was devoted to <strong>the</strong> "bread and butter" problems<strong>of</strong> advertising, circulation and job printing. Philip D. Adler, Kewanee Star-Courier,spoke on "Building Circulation," as did Benjamin Weir, Charleston Daily Courier."Need for Adequate Insurance and Appraisals," was discussed by C. W. Hinton, WatsekaIroquois County Times, after which Douglas C. McMurtrie, director <strong>of</strong> typography for<strong>the</strong> Ludlow Typograph Company, discussed "The Production <strong>of</strong> Better Printing."J. E. Dertinger, Bushnell Record, spoke on "Mooching Advertising." Ano<strong>the</strong>r evil,that <strong>of</strong> "The Competition <strong>of</strong> Free Circulation Newspapers," was discussed by John Udell<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lake Forest Lake Forester. "How to Build Up Local Advertising," was <strong>the</strong>subject treated by Howe V. Morgan, editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sparta News-Plaindealer. A talkby H. J. Hirsch, a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong> advertising service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chicago Tribune,concluded <strong>the</strong> session. He gave <strong>the</strong> following guides for deciding on an effective advertisingprogram:1. Is it time to advertise?2. Is <strong>the</strong> product right?3. Is <strong>the</strong> management right? Is <strong>the</strong>re proper window display, etc.?4. Is <strong>the</strong> medium right?5. Is <strong>the</strong> copy right? There is a moral obligation on <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> publisherto see that <strong>the</strong> advertiser uses <strong>the</strong> space he gets to <strong>the</strong> maximum extent.On Friday evening a group <strong>of</strong> thirty dined at <strong>the</strong> Greek Cafe, 216 North Dearbornstreet, and ano<strong>the</strong>r group <strong>of</strong> twenty-five at <strong>the</strong> Bamboo Inn. A number <strong>of</strong> editorsand <strong>the</strong>ir wives saw "Just Fancy," a musical comedy at <strong>the</strong> Olympic <strong>the</strong>atre thatevening.The final session, Saturday morning, was given over entirely to <strong>the</strong> problems confronting<strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association and steps were taken towards solving <strong>the</strong>m.
