Dallman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> State Register delivered a tribute toHenry Wilson Clendenin, late senior editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Register; <strong>the</strong> late J. V. Riley <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Rockford Morning Star was honored in <strong>the</strong> same manner by Lieutenant Governor Sterling.The death <strong>of</strong> Judge Burr Swan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pike County Republican was announced.Robert R. Aurner, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> advertising at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin, <strong>the</strong>nspoke on "Tiding Over <strong>the</strong> Dull Periods." This was followed by "How to Get <strong>the</strong> Non-Advertisers to Advertise," by Homer B. Clemmons.The Honorable Fred E. Sterling was toastmaster at <strong>the</strong> banquet session held in <strong>the</strong>Urbana-Lincoln hotel, Friday evening. The delegates were greeted by David Kinley,president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University, who ex<strong>press</strong>ed his appreciation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong>Journalism project had <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> editors. He told <strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong> University and<strong>newspaper</strong>s stand for <strong>the</strong> same thing, "to find <strong>the</strong> truth, pursue it to <strong>the</strong> limit, and tell itfreely without partisanship." Referring to <strong>the</strong> newly established school <strong>of</strong> journalismhe said: "It is our part now so to manage <strong>the</strong> school as to gratify <strong>the</strong> ambitions that youhave for it by setting <strong>the</strong> high standards that we all believe in and making this <strong>the</strong> leadingschool <strong>of</strong> journalism in <strong>the</strong> country."Henry T. Claus, editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Boston Transcript, talked on "Growing Tendencies <strong>of</strong>Growing Newspapers."Developing his subject, "<strong>Illinois</strong>," Governor Len Small told members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>press</strong>that <strong>the</strong> state would surpass all o<strong>the</strong>rs in wealth and population when all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> projectsfor public improvements that are now being contemplated are completed.Ambrose Wyrick, tenor, <strong>of</strong> Chicago, was last on <strong>the</strong> program, speaking on "Musicand Its Relations to Business." He made <strong>the</strong> subject so interesting that his hearers urgedhim to continue whenever he threatened to stop.Miss Lucille Smiley, Peoria, sang two numbers. Music for dancing, after <strong>the</strong>banquet, was furnished by special orchestra. About two hundred were present at <strong>the</strong>dinner.J. M. Sheets, Oblong Oracle, presented Governor Small, Lieutenant Governor Sterling,and S. P. Preston with watches in token <strong>of</strong> appreciation for <strong>the</strong> work <strong>the</strong>y havedone in behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>press</strong> <strong>association</strong>. The watches were <strong>the</strong> gifts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>.John Henry Nash, artist printer <strong>of</strong> San Francisco, was first on <strong>the</strong> Saturday morningprogram, speaking on "The Revival <strong>of</strong> Printing." His address and exhibits were excellentand it was with regret that he was allowed to depart after talking for an hour.Richard J. Finnegan, co-editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chicago Journal, spoke on "Shall We Enforce<strong>the</strong> Law and How?" with particular reference to <strong>the</strong> influence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>press</strong> on law enforcements.26S
