<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>E. L. Bogart, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> economics at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> spoke on "TheEconomist Looks Behind <strong>the</strong> Scene." Frank Collins, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Areola Record-Herald, spokeon "Labor Saving in a Print Shop"; and ^'. W. Loomis, LaGrange Citizen, on "GettingRight Prices For Your Product."The Past Presidents' Dinner was <strong>the</strong> event Thursday evening. It was held at <strong>the</strong>Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Tea Room from six to seven thirty o'clock. Thomas Rees, <strong>Illinois</strong> State Register,presided. A list <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past presidents <strong>the</strong>n living and <strong>the</strong> years in which <strong>the</strong>yserved in as president was read. It included <strong>the</strong> following:John K. LeBaron, 1887-1888, 182 Broadway, Yonkers, New York; Owen Scott,1889-1890, Bloomington Bulletin; Thomas Rees, 1891-1892, Springfield; C. M. Tinney,1896-1898, Virginia Gazette; Charles Boeschenstein, 1898-1899, Edwardsville Intelligencer;M. F. Walsh, 1899-1900, Harvard Herald and Independent; Charles W. Bliss,1902-1903, Hillsboro Montgomery News; Charles Bradshaw, 1903-1904, CarrolltonPatriot; J. C. Adams, 1907-1908, Peotone Vedette; S. K. Stro<strong>the</strong>rs, Taylorville andHavana papers, now <strong>of</strong> Pittsfield; W. T. Bedford, 1909-1910, LaSalle Tribune; J. Smith, 1925-1926, Waukegan Sun;H. E. Bell, 1926-1927, White Hall Register-Republican.The editors stood one minute in silent meditation in tribute to J. B. Castle andCharles B. Warner. Letters were read from <strong>the</strong> absent— J. C. Adams, Benjamin Herbert,Owen Scott, W. B. Davis, J. K. LeBaron, Albert H. Gravenhorst.Charles W. Bliss was elected president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Past Presidents' organization to succeedSenator Rees. S. P. Preston was elected vice-president and M. F. Walsh was electedsecretary.Remarks were made by J. E. McClure, S. K. Stro<strong>the</strong>r, W. J. Smith, and H. F. Bell.At seven thirty an informal social hour was held at <strong>the</strong> Union building. Followingthis O. H. Runyan, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bradner Smith and Company, lectured on "The Forest in <strong>the</strong>Pressroom," showing moving pictures <strong>of</strong> modern methods used in making paper.On Friday morning a joint session was held until 10:15. H. L. Williamson gave<strong>the</strong> secretary's report. He recommended <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> a budget <strong>of</strong> $5,000 toprovide funds for meeting expenses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association and cited similarbudgets in existence in <strong>the</strong> New York and Pennsylvania <strong>press</strong> <strong>association</strong>s. He alsoadvocated <strong>the</strong> employment <strong>of</strong> an attorney to represent <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong> in legal matters,especially those pertaining to legislative action which affects <strong>Illinois</strong> editors, and whicharises during sessions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state legislature.Following <strong>the</strong> secretary's report Edward Cary Hayes, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> sociology at <strong>the</strong>University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>, spoke on "The Press and <strong>the</strong> So-Called Public Mind."Josephine Turck Baker, editor <strong>of</strong> Correct English magazine, Evanston, spoke on"Improving English."During <strong>the</strong> conference A. L. Bowen, editorial writer on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> State Journal,presided at a "Public Affairs Institute," given at a session <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> daily papers. Speaking<strong>of</strong> this session, Mr. Bowen later said:"Editors and publishers <strong>of</strong> daily <strong>newspaper</strong>s held one sectional session for <strong>the</strong> purpose<strong>of</strong> discussing several objects <strong>of</strong> special editorial interest to <strong>the</strong>m. Dr. J. W. Garner.
