White, Detroit News; Oswald GarrisonVillard, The Nation; Willis J. Abbot, Christian Science Monitor; Dean Eric W. Allen,Oregon; J. W. Cunliffe, Columbia; Walter Williams, Missouri; W. G. Bleyer, Wisconsin;L. N. Flint, Kansas; and o<strong>the</strong>rs.Charles H. Dennis, editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chicago Daily News recommended in Octob?r1926 that <strong>the</strong> plan be given thorough study and, under favorable circumstances, thatit be applied with extreme care and to a limited extent until its results could be carefullyweighed. Dean Walter Williams <strong>of</strong> Missouri and Dean W. G. Bleyer <strong>of</strong> Wisconsinreferred to it during its formative stages as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most important, if not <strong>the</strong> mostimportant, movement for <strong>the</strong> improvement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>press</strong> that had been undertaken in<strong>the</strong> last twenty years. Several state <strong>association</strong>s appointed committees on education andbegan a study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> plan with reference to <strong>the</strong>ir own needs.Much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> committee has been done. This work includes<strong>the</strong> study and devising <strong>of</strong> tests for determining journalistic aptitude, <strong>the</strong> study anddevising <strong>of</strong> tests for determining journalistic achievement and <strong>the</strong> administration <strong>of</strong>tests and <strong>the</strong> checkup <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> results. The experience <strong>of</strong> many daily <strong>newspaper</strong> editorsand reporters, <strong>of</strong> many weekly <strong>newspaper</strong> editors and publishers, <strong>of</strong> manv teachersand directors <strong>of</strong> schools <strong>of</strong> journalism are embodied in <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional recognition plan.More than two hundred experienced <strong>newspaper</strong> men aided in shaping <strong>the</strong> early rulesand regulations.244
