<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>"A nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Illinois</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong> organization, a little exclusive because <strong>of</strong> beingpolitical in addition to editorial but yet one that always brings <strong>the</strong> 'boys' toge<strong>the</strong>r in<strong>press</strong> matters, met in Belvidere June 14th. This is <strong>the</strong> Republican Editorial Association<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Twelfth Congressional District. A large number were present to enjoy <strong>the</strong> fineluncheon tendered <strong>the</strong>m by Congressman Charles E. Fuller at one o'clock. The following<strong>of</strong>ficers were elected: President, William T. Bedford, Tribune, LaSalle; Secretary, GeorgeS. Faxon, News, Piano; Treasurer, Frank T. Moran, Republican, Belvidere. In additionto giving <strong>the</strong> congressman a vote <strong>of</strong> appreciation for his hospitality, <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>endorsed his record in congress and urged that his services be continued. The editorshad <strong>the</strong> delightful privilege <strong>of</strong> listening to addresses by United States Senator WilliamB. McKinley and Congressman-at-Large Henry Rathbone."A get-toge<strong>the</strong>r picnic <strong>of</strong> a decidedly informal nature was held in June at <strong>the</strong>Orion Country Club, in Henry County, with Editor F. S. Fullerton, Orion Times,seeing to it that everyone had a good time. Invitations were sent out to all weekly paperswithin a radius <strong>of</strong> fifty miles to come and bring <strong>the</strong>ir families and <strong>the</strong>ir forces. A few<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nearby dailies were also sent invitations. A cafeteria dinner, short business session,boating, bathing and o<strong>the</strong>r entertainment whiled away <strong>the</strong> hours."Lee County was organized June 13th, with George Shaw <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dixon Telegraphas president; Stewart Pettigrew, Amboy News, vice president; and Ralph J. Dean,Ashton Gazette, secretary. O<strong>the</strong>r publications represented were those at Franklin Groveand Paw Paw."The Knoxville Republican sent out <strong>the</strong> invitations for <strong>the</strong> Knox County editorsto ga<strong>the</strong>r and perfect an organization. The <strong>newspaper</strong>s invited were <strong>the</strong> Altona News,Oneida News, Community Newspapers <strong>of</strong> Galesburg, Abingdon Kodak, Republican-Register, Galesburg Mail, Galesburg News, Yates City Banner, Williamsfield Times."Editors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 3 8th Senatorial District, including <strong>the</strong> counties <strong>of</strong> Montgomery,Macoupin, Greene, and Jersey, were called toge<strong>the</strong>r by Norris Goode <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> VirdenRecorder at Carlinville, Saturday afternoon, June 27th, Editors J. E. McClure andC. J. Lumpkin entertaining <strong>the</strong>m at <strong>the</strong> Hillsboro Country Club."Though not a business meeting <strong>of</strong> any kind, <strong>the</strong> fishing trip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central <strong>Illinois</strong>Press Association for which invitations were sent out by <strong>the</strong> editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ChandlervilleTimes, held June 19th, and attended by several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> editors <strong>of</strong> that section, was afine affair to awaken a friendly spirit. It has become an annual affair and was heldthis year at Parcapola Cottage, Patterson Bay. This is a cottage owned by W. T. Pratt,a banker <strong>of</strong> Chandlerville, who very kindly loans it to <strong>the</strong> boys <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>,though only those from nearby can be invited as <strong>the</strong> cottage will only accommodateabout 22 people. The outing lasted from Friday evening to <strong>the</strong> following Sundayevening. Wives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> editors also attended."Shortly after <strong>the</strong> April meeting, on May 23, 1925, President Gravenhorst appointedhis committee to work out <strong>the</strong> Certificate idea. It was called <strong>the</strong> Committee on Education.(A full account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early meetings, activities, and reports <strong>of</strong> this committeeand <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional certificate plan appears following <strong>the</strong> 61st annual meeting in 1926.)The Sixtieth Annual Meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association was held at Champaign-Urbana,October 1, 2 and 3, 1925. The President, Major A. H. Gravenhorst,Effingham Review, called <strong>the</strong> meeting to order in <strong>the</strong> Union Building. Dr. David Kinley,president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University, welcomed <strong>the</strong> editors on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trustees, facultyand students. B. E. Pinkerton <strong>of</strong> Chicago responded.228
