<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>consideration to <strong>the</strong> proposition being presented by "Country Newspapers," a cooperative<strong>newspaper</strong> <strong>association</strong>."We believe that <strong>the</strong> informative advertising campaign already undertaken by <strong>the</strong><strong>Illinois</strong> Central and o<strong>the</strong>r great railroad systems opens up a foreign advertising fieldwhich is deserving <strong>of</strong> serious consideration; and we request our <strong>of</strong>ficers thoroughly toinvestigate <strong>the</strong> matter, taking such action as <strong>the</strong>y deem wise."Awards in <strong>the</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong> "make-up" contest gave first place to <strong>the</strong> Harvard Herald,and second and third respectively to <strong>the</strong> Woodstock American and <strong>the</strong> Aledo Democrat.The Rockford Republic took first prize among daily <strong>newspaper</strong>s with <strong>the</strong> CentraliaSentinel and <strong>the</strong> Champaign News-Gazette following.Places for <strong>the</strong> prize advertisement went to <strong>the</strong> Milford News, <strong>the</strong> Aledo Democratand <strong>the</strong> Grayville Mercury-Independent. The awards for <strong>the</strong> best inside page make-upwere given to <strong>the</strong> Milford News, <strong>the</strong> Minonk News-Dispatch and <strong>the</strong> Pike County News.John H. Harrison, Danville Commercial News, was unanimously chosen president<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>. The o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>ficers elected were: Vice Presidents, A. H. Gravenhorst,Effingham Review; Irl H. Marshall, Mendota Sun-Bulletin; Miss Ka<strong>the</strong>rine Mel ain,LaSalle Post; Secretary, H. L. Williamson, <strong>Illinois</strong> Publisher, Springfield; Treasurer,E. H. Childress, Wayne County Press.Immediately after his election, <strong>the</strong> new president, Mr. Harrison, made <strong>the</strong> followingstatement to <strong>the</strong> <strong>press</strong>:"There is no reason why <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> should not have a schoolor college <strong>of</strong> journalism unequalled by any in America. The first step shouldbe enlargement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> courses in journalism into a department <strong>of</strong> journalism.I assure you that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association would give its unqualified supportto such a move."At <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> meeting <strong>the</strong> members attended <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>-Michigan baseballgame, and <strong>the</strong> annual May Fete <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Woman's Athletic Association.Women editors and wives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> editors attending <strong>the</strong> meeting were taken on atour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> campus, by Theta Sigma Phi, pr<strong>of</strong>essional journalistic sorority. Thev werealso entertained at a tea at <strong>the</strong> University Woman's Club, with Mrs. F. W. Scott andMrs. H. M. Dunlap as hostesses, and were taken to visit <strong>the</strong> farm <strong>of</strong> Senator Dunlap.1924The Fifty-ninth Annual Meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association was held onOctober 9, 10 and 11, 1924, at <strong>the</strong> Union Building, University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong>, Champaign-Urbana. John H. Harrison, Danville Commercial-News, President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association,presided. The session was divided into two sections, that <strong>of</strong> weekly paper editors, overwhich S. P. Preston, Gillespie News, presided, and that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> daily editors, over whichA. L. Bowen, <strong>Illinois</strong> State Journal, Springfield, presided.Several short addresses were listed for <strong>the</strong> weekly section. The first <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se wasgiven by Charles Mead, editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geneva Republican, on <strong>the</strong> subject, "The EarlyDay Editor."The second speaker was I. S. Dunn, Divernon, printing instructor at <strong>the</strong> St. CharlesSchool for Boys, and President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Illinois</strong> Editorial Association. He talkedbrieflv on "The Sou<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Illinois</strong> Editorial Association and Its Relation to <strong>the</strong> ParentOrganization." He spoke <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deep interest each editor had in <strong>the</strong> Association. JohnM. Sheets, Oblong Oracle, in an address entitled, "The Editorial Page," emphasized to<strong>the</strong> editors that <strong>the</strong>ir editorial columns must contain material for <strong>the</strong> common goodand not be tilled with trivial items.
