Ii i inois Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>Miss Elsie Sutton, Ivesdale News, in a speech on <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> women in journalism,stated that in <strong>the</strong> country journalism field women had <strong>the</strong> same opportunity as men.She said in part:"It requires accuracy in all <strong>the</strong> little details, tact, discrimination, judiciousness anda great moral courage to bring about <strong>the</strong> most perfect results in <strong>the</strong> country <strong>newspaper</strong>field but women are not lacking in any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se essentials. In fact she has been trainedthrough <strong>the</strong> ages. I believe that <strong>the</strong> main requisites for a successful country <strong>newspaper</strong>career are love <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work and an earnest endeavor to give genuine service."Senator H. S. Magill, Jr., Springfield, outlined <strong>the</strong> plans for a celebration in 1918<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one hundredth anniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> admission <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> into <strong>the</strong> Union. TheAssociation adopted resolutions to favor <strong>the</strong> plan and <strong>the</strong> members pledged to work fora celebration in every community. Senator Magill said in part:"In 1918 <strong>Illinois</strong> will celebrate <strong>the</strong> one hundredth anniversary <strong>of</strong> its admission into<strong>the</strong> Union, and plans are well under way to make <strong>the</strong> observance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> momentous eventstatewide and <strong>of</strong> mammoth proportions."The legislature has taken <strong>the</strong> matter up and a committee <strong>of</strong> one hundred has beenappointed to prepare a program that will extend over several days and will be <strong>of</strong> a naturethat can be followed out in every community in <strong>the</strong> state."Of course, Chicago will lead in this centennial celebration, and <strong>the</strong> plan is to haveahistorical pageant here that will be <strong>the</strong> peer <strong>of</strong> any ever attempted in <strong>the</strong> United States.An effort also will be made to have representatives <strong>of</strong> every foreign country present. Wemean to show <strong>the</strong> world that <strong>Illinois</strong> is <strong>the</strong> greatest state in <strong>the</strong> Union."As a means <strong>of</strong> giving <strong>the</strong> year local significance I suggest that <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Press Association use <strong>the</strong>ir best efforts to induce each locality to celebrate by pickingout features <strong>of</strong> local history and making from <strong>the</strong>m a pageant, as did Rockford last yearwith such great success. I also urge that an effort be made to mark local historicalevents by some sort <strong>of</strong> permanent memorial."Mrs. Mary Bradshaw, Carrollton, known as <strong>the</strong> "mo<strong>the</strong>r" <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association,was in attendance as she had been for <strong>the</strong> past twenty years. Her son, CharlesBradshaw, was editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carrollton Patriot. Mrs. Bradshaw was seventy-nine years<strong>of</strong> age and took an active interest in all <strong>the</strong> meetings.The <strong>of</strong>ficers elected were: President, W. B. Davis, Mt. Sterling Democrat-Message;Vice Presidents, H. U. Bailey, Bureau County Republican, Princeton; Miss Elsie Sutton,Ivesdale News; Paul R. Goddard, Washington Post and News; Secretary, J. M. Sheets,Oblong Oracle; Treasurer, Hugh R. Marshall, Yorkville Record.Forty-two representatives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association visited <strong>the</strong> industrialland bureau <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chicago Herald in <strong>the</strong> Ashland Block, where besides <strong>the</strong> boo<strong>the</strong>xhibits "The Making <strong>of</strong> a Modern Magazine," one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> industrial moving picturefilms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Curtis Publishing Company, was displayed. A short lecture on <strong>the</strong> film wasgiven by C. S. Crossman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bureau <strong>of</strong> commercial economics, Washington, D. C.Entertainment during <strong>the</strong> meeting was provided by a tour <strong>of</strong> inspection <strong>of</strong> Armourand Company's packing house and <strong>the</strong> White Sox game. The convention closed witha banquet.Short CourseA by-product <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong>instruction in journalism at <strong>the</strong> state university was <strong>the</strong> holding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first annualconference <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Country Press at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> on April 7, 8and 9, 1916.195
