The invitation was accepted.Memorial papers were read in honor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late A. W. Lindbeck <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SorentoBlade, by W. W. Lowis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greenville Advocate; <strong>the</strong> late Arthur Bentley <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> PikeCounty Times, by <strong>the</strong> Honorable Harry Higbee; <strong>the</strong> late Mark Ruggles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> MendotaSun-Bulletin, by Otto Kieselback <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mendota Post; and <strong>the</strong> late J. M. Bush, PikeCounty Democrat, from <strong>the</strong> Pike County Democrat <strong>of</strong> June 13, 1906, by Mr. Snively.1907The Forty-Second Annual Session <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Association was held inPeoria on June 4, S and 6, 1907. The President, H. N. Wheeler, Quincy Journal, presided.Mayor O'Conner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Peoria welcomed <strong>the</strong> editors, and E. A. Snively,Springfield, made <strong>the</strong> response.The President gave his address stressing <strong>the</strong> need <strong>of</strong> new members for <strong>the</strong> Association;recommending programs <strong>of</strong> more variety, and with outside speakers <strong>of</strong> repute;and condemning <strong>the</strong> "demoralizing and degrading" comic supplements issued by <strong>the</strong>metropolitan papers and some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> larger country papers.The Honorable William Hawley Smith, Peoria, spoke to <strong>the</strong> members on hisreminiscences <strong>of</strong> Bill Nye. E. A. Snively, Springfield, brought up <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Association having an agent in Chicago to contract for foreign advertising and <strong>the</strong> purchase<strong>of</strong> material. The committee that had been appointed to look into <strong>the</strong> question hadnot acted, and Mr. Snively moved that <strong>the</strong> next President and Secretary be instructedto investigate <strong>the</strong> matter and report <strong>the</strong>ir judgment to <strong>the</strong> Association. The motionwas carried.A discussion was held as to whe<strong>the</strong>r time tables should be published as news, asrailroad advertising, or at all. A rising vote was taken which showed that all but halfa dozen persons in <strong>the</strong> room were <strong>the</strong>re by <strong>the</strong> courtesy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> railroads.The members made a trip to Bartonville, where <strong>the</strong>y visited <strong>the</strong> buildings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>home for <strong>the</strong> insane, and were served dinner in <strong>the</strong> dining hall. Doctor Zellar <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>institution addressed <strong>the</strong> Association on <strong>the</strong> work <strong>the</strong>re, and answered <strong>the</strong> questions<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members.Officers were elected as follows: President, J. Crawford Adams, Peotone Vedette;Vice Presidents, Miss Mary Davidson, Carthage Republican; J. M. Sheets, Oblong Oracle;Charles B. Mead, Geneva Republican; Secretary, J. M. Page, Jersey ville Democrat;Treasurer, H. A. David, Girard Anchor; Executive Committee, John M. Rapp, FairfieldRecord; S. K. Stro<strong>the</strong>r, Taylorville Courier; M. F. Walsh, Harvard Herald; AuditingCommittee, A. T. Cowan, Tri-Country Press, Polo; Eugene L'Hote, Milford Herald;J. W. Wild, Nokomis Free Press Gazette; Legislative Committee, Honorable E. A.Snively, Springfield.A. N. Johnson, State Highway Engineer, addressed <strong>the</strong> Association on "Work <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Highway Commission," and was questioned at great length on road matters.A paper by Hal W. Trovillion, Herrin News, on "A Criticism <strong>of</strong> Country Journalism,"though not read during <strong>the</strong> meeting was printed in <strong>the</strong> minutes.A banquet was held at <strong>the</strong> Creve Coeur Club.
