<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>five-cent rate which <strong>the</strong> law allowed? Certainly. Why not? By resolution it was soordered. Those publishers not present were to be seen and instructed. Everybodysolemnly agreed. On <strong>the</strong> appointed day, a committee representing <strong>the</strong> Hancock CountyPress Association waited upon our county trtasurer with <strong>the</strong> aforesaid resolutions andsignatures. After hearing <strong>the</strong>ir story, <strong>the</strong> sympa<strong>the</strong>tic treasurer turned sad eyes on <strong>the</strong>mand said, 'Gentlemen, it won't go. One <strong>of</strong> your number has turned Judas and submitteda bid for <strong>the</strong> whole thing at three cents.' That ended <strong>the</strong> effort. The matter was droppedand <strong>the</strong> assessment lists were distributed to <strong>the</strong> various publishers over <strong>the</strong> county atthree cents as usual, but Judas did not get a line. The Hancock County Press Associationhas not yet recovered from that blow, and its treasurer still holds <strong>the</strong> initiatorycash. So endeth <strong>the</strong> first lesson. It would seem that <strong>the</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong> fraternity is like afortuitus concourse <strong>of</strong> fleas—not to be depended on collectively but individually <strong>the</strong>yunderstand <strong>the</strong>ir business."After Miss Mary Davidson had read <strong>the</strong> foregoing paper on "Auxiliary Press Associations,"Mr. W. F. Eastman, Dispatch, Moline, said: "I would like to state to <strong>the</strong>writer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> very able paper that she missed one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> very able <strong>association</strong>s. We havetwo auxiliary <strong>association</strong>s; one social which meets every month; a very pleasant <strong>association</strong><strong>of</strong> about 80 members; average attendance every month about forty. The o<strong>the</strong>r isknown as a business <strong>association</strong>; it is purely business and non-partisan in feeling; it isfor <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> getting <strong>the</strong> publishers toge<strong>the</strong>r; both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>association</strong>s have beenvaluable to us. I refer to <strong>the</strong> Tri-City Press Club and <strong>the</strong> Tri-City Publishers' Association."H. F. Downing, Virginia Enquirer, read a paper on "Home Prints vs. Patents." Itwas moved by E. A. Snively, Springfield, that Owen Scott, Decatur Herald; CharlesBoeschenstein, Edwardsville Intelligencer, and Morris Emmerson, Lincoln News-Herald,be appointed a committee to inquire into <strong>the</strong> feasibility <strong>of</strong> employing an agent whoseduty it shall be to purchase supplies, as well as act as advertising agent for <strong>the</strong> members<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association. The motion was adopted."Advertising Rates" was <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> a discussion led by W. L. Fay, JacksonvilleJournal.Mr. Woodward, advertising manager <strong>of</strong> White City, was present and invited <strong>the</strong>members to visit White City.The annual address was given by Morris Emmerson, Lincoln News-Herald. E. A.Snively, Springfield, reported on <strong>the</strong> Legislative matters in which <strong>the</strong> Association wasinterested.A. W. Glessner, Galena Gazette, read a paper on "Co-operative Buying." The nexttopic was "Cost <strong>of</strong> Plates" by John M. Onstott, Petersburg Democrat, followed by"Cost <strong>of</strong> Patents" by Eugene L'Hote, Milford Herald.J. V. Beatty, Nunda Herald, read a paper on "Prices for Display Advertising,Weekly," and A. R. Van Skivor, Streator Free Press, a paper on "Relation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Newspapersto <strong>the</strong> Railroads." Dudley Walker, advertising manager for <strong>the</strong> C. & A., Chicago,<strong>the</strong>n discussed "Relation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Railroads to <strong>the</strong> Newspapers," and some comments followedon <strong>the</strong> use and misuse <strong>of</strong> railroad passes by <strong>newspaper</strong> men.C. D. Tufts, Centralia Democrat, read an essay entitled, "Why Should Not aBachelor Editor Marry?"The <strong>of</strong>ficers elected for 1905-1906 were: President, J. B. Castle, Sandwich Argus;Vice Presidents, Clarence F. Buck, Republican-Atlas, Monmouth; Edwin Dyson, RushvilleTimes; Miss Mary Davidson, Carthage Republican; Secretary, J. M. Page, JerseyvilleDemocrat; Treasurer, Victor Haven, Greenfield Argus; Executive Committee, M. F.Walsh, Harvard Herald; A. R. Van Skivor, Streator Free Press; S. K.
