<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>At <strong>the</strong> invitation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trustees <strong>of</strong> Knox College, <strong>the</strong> visiting editors attended <strong>the</strong>evening exercises <strong>of</strong> Knox College Founder's Day. The principal speaker <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eveningwas <strong>the</strong> Honorable James H. Eckels, a trustee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institution and former comptroller<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> currency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States, who spoke on "Public Opinion."General Smith D. Atkins, Freeport Journal, read a paper on "The Parcels Post."J. W. Becker, Jerseyville Republican, continued on <strong>the</strong> same subject. A motion wasmade and carried that <strong>the</strong> Committee on Resolutions be instructed to prepare a properresolution asking <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> Congress to oppose <strong>the</strong> passage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hearst ParcelsPost bill.This resolution was later made and adopted."Contempt <strong>of</strong> Court" was discussed by John M. Rapp, Fairfield Record. "CountryCorrespondence" was covered in papers by H. A. David, Winchester Herald, and ClintonBliss, Hillsboro News. DeWitt C. Owen, Dixon Star, spoke on "Will <strong>the</strong> Job DepartmentTake Care <strong>of</strong> Itself?" answering <strong>the</strong> question most emphatically, "No."As <strong>the</strong> last President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association had been a Republican, W. W. Lowis,Greenville Advocate, nominated John M. Rapp, Fairfield Record, a Democrat, who wasunanimously elected. The o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>ficers elected were: Vice Presidents, J. B. Castle,Sandwich Argus; J. W. Becker, Jerseyville Republican; Miss Bessie Turner, Cairo Telegram;Secretary, J.M. Page, Jerseyville Democrat; Treasurer, Victor H. Haven, GreenfieldArgus; Executive Committee, A. R. Van Skivor, Streator Free Press; S. K. Stro<strong>the</strong>r,Taylorville Courier; M. F. Walsh, Harvard Herald; Auditing Committee, Terry Simmons,Marseilles Plaindealer; E. M. Johnson, Pontiac Free Trade Observer; J. \V. Wild,Nokomis Free Press Gazette; Legislative Committee, E. A. Snivel)', Springfield.A memorial on <strong>the</strong> late John W. Bailey <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bureau County Republican, founder<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association, was read by George Burt, Henry Republican.A banquet was given at <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> meeting by <strong>the</strong> Galesburg Commercial Club.167
