<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>The annual address, "The Newspaper <strong>of</strong> Tomorrow," was given by W. L. Eaton,Rockford Register-Gazette. The next topic taken up was "Co-operation in Buying,"a paper read by J. N. Garver, Peoria Transcript. Van L. Hampton, Macomb By-Stander,read a paper oh "The Best Method <strong>of</strong> Securing and Holding Subscribers." James Lamont,Rockford Lever, spoke informally on <strong>the</strong> subject."Rural Free Mail Delivery," was <strong>the</strong> topic <strong>of</strong> a paper read by John M. Stahl,Quincy Farmer's Call. He stated that <strong>the</strong> post <strong>of</strong>fice department was opposed to ruralfree mail delivery and pointed out <strong>the</strong> need <strong>of</strong> it.E. A. Snively reported his work as legislative committeeman in trying to get <strong>the</strong>libel law enacted that had been discussed in <strong>the</strong> last meeting. He had secured <strong>the</strong> cooperation<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> publishers <strong>of</strong> Chicago and <strong>of</strong> a Chicago representative in <strong>the</strong> House topresent <strong>the</strong> bill.Mr. Eaton read a paper by E. E. Bartktt, Rockford Register-Gazette, on "TheCountry Press and Improvements in Machinery and Appliances Connected Therewith."W. R. Jewell, Danville News, read a paper on "Street Car, Fence, and O<strong>the</strong>r FakeAdvertisements." The next topic was "Physicians and Their Relations to <strong>the</strong> Press."The first paper on <strong>the</strong> subject was read by E. P. Kimball, Virden Record; <strong>the</strong> second,by C. D. Tufts, Centralia Democrat. Charles W. Coughlin, Plainville Observer, reada paper on "The Semi-Weekly." There was some discussion and Irwin A. Ewing, MonmouthReview, read a paper on <strong>the</strong> same topic."Preferred Positions and Reading Notices" was <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> a paper read by WalterColyer, Albion Journal. The next topic was "Talks on Foreign Advertising," by D. M.Lord <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Advertising Agency <strong>of</strong> Lord and Thomas. Charles W. Bliss, Hillsboro News,spoke on "The Editor as a Candidate."Officers elected were President, C. D. Tufts, Centralia Democrat; Vice Presidents,W. L. Eaton, Rockford Register-Gazette; Arthur C. Bentley, Baylis Guide; T. A.Fritchey, Olney Republican; Secretary, J. M. Page, Jersey ville Democrat; Treasurer,C. M. Tinney, Virginia Gazette; Executive Committee, T. H. Stokes, Lincoln Times;E. M. Johnson, Free Trade Observer, Pontiac; J. J. Penny, Murphysboro Independent.On October 26, 1895, more than one hundred members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Press Associationmet in <strong>the</strong> Union Station at St. Louis for an excursion to Atlanta, Georgia.A dinner was given <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong> that evening by <strong>the</strong> American Type Founders Association.A large delegation from <strong>the</strong> Missouri Press Association, which had just concludedits annual meeting at Pertle Springs, was also entertained on this occasion.President C. D. Tufts, Centralia Democrat, had charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> accommodations,and at nine o'clock in <strong>the</strong> evening <strong>the</strong> special train <strong>of</strong> Pullmans left St. Louis. The routeas far as Nashville lay over <strong>the</strong> Louisville & Nashville Railroad, <strong>the</strong>nce to Chattanoogaover <strong>the</strong> Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis, and to Atlanta over <strong>the</strong> Western & Atlantic.The train was stopped in Nashville Sunday morning so that <strong>the</strong> members mighthave breakfast <strong>the</strong>re, and in Chattanooga that evening for "supper." On Monday morning<strong>the</strong> party reached Atlanta and Association headquarters were established at <strong>the</strong>Alhambra Hotel. To quote from <strong>the</strong> account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trip by R. T. Spencer, IlliopolisState Center:"We found Atlanta to be a lively, bustling city <strong>of</strong> nearly 100,000 population,and considering <strong>the</strong> fact that thirty years ago it was in ruins, with less than 10,000inhabitants, most <strong>of</strong> whom were poverty stricken, it is indeed a remarkable place.Today it calls itself <strong>the</strong> 'Chicago <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> South,' and claims with good reason to beone <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cleanest, best paved, best drained, best sewered, best lighted and bestgoverned cities on <strong>the</strong> continent, if not in <strong>the</strong> world.146
