<strong>Illinois</strong> \i» spaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>Chapter VIThe Beginning <strong>of</strong> Linotype Days1895The Thirtieth Annual Session was held it <strong>the</strong> Lexington Hotel, Chicago, on February12, 13, 14 and 15, 1895. President George W. Cyrus <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Camp Point Journalannounced <strong>the</strong> first topic on <strong>the</strong> program, "Auxiliary Sheets and Advertising in <strong>the</strong>Same." E. E. Williamson, Griggsville Independent Press, read a paper on <strong>the</strong> subject.\\". M. Goudy, Fairfield Press, spoke on <strong>the</strong> same subject. There was some discussion<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> matter.The President delivered his address. The report <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Committee on President'sAddress was as follows:"We, <strong>the</strong> committee, to whom was referred <strong>the</strong> President's Address, wouldrecommend:"First: That a committee <strong>of</strong> one be selected in each congressional district toact under <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> President and Secretary in securing a larger membership<strong>of</strong> this <strong>association</strong>."Second: That a summer outing held at a suitable nor<strong>the</strong>rn resort during <strong>the</strong>season <strong>of</strong> 1895 would be <strong>of</strong> uncalculable benefit to every member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>,and a committee be appointed at this meeting to make necessary arrangements<strong>the</strong>refor."Third: That in <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> future programs <strong>the</strong> ladies <strong>of</strong> our <strong>association</strong>should be recognized, and a certain proportion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time allotted <strong>the</strong>m."Fourth: That each delegate to <strong>the</strong> National Editorial Association shall berequired to pay his proportion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> capitation tax at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> election."Fifth: A continuance <strong>of</strong> that policy <strong>of</strong> independence and dignity adoptedbv <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong> in asking no favors <strong>of</strong> amusement managers, believing that thiscourse will most surely win respect and courteous treatment to all."Sixth: That an auditing committee <strong>of</strong> three be elected at this meeting whoseduty it shall be to audit all bills against <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong> and to examine and auditannually <strong>the</strong> books <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Treasurer, and report <strong>the</strong> same to <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>. Inelecting said committee we would recommend that <strong>the</strong>ir term <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice be threeyears respectively, except for <strong>the</strong> ensuing year, when <strong>the</strong>y shall be chosen for one,two and three years, <strong>the</strong> allotment to be determined by <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> committeeas <strong>the</strong>v may agree. Respectfully submitted, M. F. Walsh, Chas. Bradshavs',J. N. Garver, R. D. Parker, J. C. Collson.""Newspaper Illustrations—Cost <strong>of</strong> Cuts, etc." was <strong>the</strong> next topic. The first speakerwas L. A. McLean, Urbana Herald, on "Benefits and Cost"; n;xt were Charles Bradshaw,Carrollton Patriot, and Charles W. Warner, Hoopeston Chronicle, on "Cost <strong>of</strong> Cuts, etc."E. A. Snively read a paper on <strong>the</strong> late James M. Davidson, former editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Fulton Democrat and <strong>the</strong> Havana Post.A reception by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Woman's Press Association at <strong>the</strong> Auditorium Hotelwas announced.
