<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and <strong>History</strong>The committee on "How to Increase <strong>the</strong> Efficiency <strong>of</strong> Our Organization," reportedThe recommendation follows:"Your committee to whom was referred <strong>the</strong> duty <strong>of</strong> presenting suggestionsas to <strong>the</strong> manner <strong>of</strong> increasing <strong>the</strong> efficiency <strong>of</strong> our organization, beg leave to submitby G. A. Burgess, Monticello, was accepted.<strong>the</strong> following, <strong>the</strong> execution <strong>of</strong> which in detail, will in our opinion, aid materiallyin attaining <strong>the</strong> desired end:"First. The earnest labor <strong>of</strong> every member toward enforcing <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong><strong>of</strong>ficial reports and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> election ballots, as required by law."Second. In ga<strong>the</strong>ring annual statistics concerning cost <strong>of</strong> production, prices,etc., including both job and <strong>newspaper</strong> departments, which <strong>the</strong> recent 'Symposium'has shown to be desirable."Third. In naming one week in <strong>the</strong> year to be known as 'exchange week,' atwhich time each member will send his paper <strong>of</strong> that week to all members with whomhe desires to exchange. We recommend <strong>the</strong> week following <strong>the</strong> annual meeting <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>."Fourth. In conducting a department in one or more trade journals, whichmay <strong>of</strong>fer free space, said department to contain <strong>of</strong>ficial and o<strong>the</strong>r information <strong>of</strong>special interest to our membership. We recommend <strong>the</strong> secretary as <strong>the</strong> properperson to edit such department. Propositions toward this end have been receivedfrom National Printer Journalist and Inland Printer, which accompany this report."Fifth. In encouraging and aiding <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> county organizations."Sixth. In making special effort to give to <strong>the</strong> youth, through our columns,more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> literature, especially historic literature, so essential to broadermental development, as recommended by President John W. Cook <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> StateNormal School, in his lecture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> night <strong>of</strong> February 22."Seventh. By making favorable mention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> meetings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>in our columns."Eighth. By each member bringing to <strong>the</strong> annual meeting one copy <strong>of</strong> hispaper to be placed upon a table, for mutual benefit."Ninth. By having a query box to be opened at a given hour daily, formiscellaneous questions."Your committee recommended <strong>the</strong> discussion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above points in order,by two minute speeches by volunteers, or by members upon whom <strong>the</strong> chair maycall. Respectfully submitted, Geo. W. Cyrus, G. A. Burgess, Chas. Bradshaw."World's Fair Problems in 1894The report <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> World's Fair committee was given by E. A. Snively and wasaccepted."The majority <strong>of</strong> your committee, appointed at Litchfield to look after <strong>the</strong>interests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong> in connection with <strong>the</strong> World's Fair, desire to presenta final report. Subsequent to <strong>the</strong> meeting at Rockford and before <strong>the</strong> opening <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> fair, <strong>the</strong>re were several times when <strong>the</strong> controlling <strong>of</strong>ficials seemed determinednot to permit any editor to enter <strong>the</strong> fair grounds unless he had previously paidhis fifty cents. On each public appearance <strong>of</strong> this disposition, Mr. Page went toChicago, and after consulting with <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficials, secured a renewal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> promisesmade to your committee prior to <strong>the</strong> meeting at Rockford."As stated at <strong>the</strong> last meeting, <strong>the</strong> committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> World'sFair Commissioners, having <strong>the</strong> matter in charge, had at our request employedMr. Page to take charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Press Department in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> building.
