<strong>Illinois</strong> Newspaper Directory and HisiomCommittee be empowered to expend such sums as <strong>the</strong>y may see fit for <strong>the</strong> entertainment<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ladies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong> at such meeting."Second: That in locating <strong>the</strong> future places <strong>of</strong> meeting and in arranging for <strong>the</strong>program that <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong> should be independent and ask nothing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public butrespect and courteous treatment, and to that end all expenses incurred should be borneby <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>."Third: That a committee be appointed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most experienced members <strong>of</strong> this<strong>association</strong> to obtain <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members and visitors as to <strong>the</strong> best plan <strong>of</strong> securinga larger number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>newspaper</strong> men <strong>of</strong> this state as members <strong>of</strong> this <strong>association</strong>,and that said committee report at this meeting."fourth: That it be made <strong>the</strong> especial duty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> president <strong>of</strong> this <strong>association</strong> on<strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> any member to write at once an <strong>of</strong>ficial letter to <strong>the</strong> family."Fifth: That a committee be appointed to keep in touch with <strong>the</strong> improvementsmade in typesetting and printing machinery, and that said committee report at our nextmeeting."Sixth: That we recognize <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> county organization, and that a committeebe appointed to formulate a plan that will advance <strong>the</strong> best interests <strong>of</strong> this<strong>association</strong> by aiding in <strong>the</strong> forming and encouraging county organization."Seventh: That we recognize <strong>the</strong> valuable aid rendered to <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> this<strong>association</strong> by <strong>the</strong> several trade journals; and that we would suggest that <strong>the</strong>se journalsgive more detailed news regarding matters pertaining to <strong>the</strong> same, and that <strong>the</strong>y beliberally supported by subscriptions from our members."Eighth: That Article XI <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> By-laws provides that no person who has notbeen a member <strong>of</strong> this <strong>association</strong> for at least two years can accompany any excursionsgiven by it; that we regard this as an unjust discrimination, and would recommend thatevery application for membership be closely scanned by <strong>the</strong> committee on membershipand that Article XI entire be repealed."Ninth: That we recommend that an auditing committee consisting <strong>of</strong> three beelected each year whose duty it shall be to audit all bills against <strong>the</strong> <strong>association</strong>, also toexamine and audit <strong>the</strong> books <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Treasurer for <strong>the</strong> past year and make report on sameis early as practicable at each annual meeting."Tenth: That we recommend that <strong>the</strong> Treasurer give a good and sufficient bondto be approved by <strong>the</strong> Executive Committee; and that he shall only be eligible for onere-election. Respectfully submitted, L. A. McLean, J. K. LeBaron, C. C. Marquis."The next topic was "An Ideal Country Weekly," and <strong>the</strong> first paper, on "How ItShould Appear," was presented by L. A. McLean, Urbana Herald. Papers on <strong>the</strong> samesubject were read by M. F. Walsh, Harvard Herald; W. M. Goudy, Fairfield Press;F. O. VanGalder, True Republican, Sycamore; Charles C. Chain, Bushnell Democrat;Victor H. Haven, Greenfield Argus; Horace Crihrield, Atlanta Argus; J. M. Bush,Pittsfield Democrat; and L. F. Tiomley, Shawneetown News. "What An Ideal Weekly-Should Contain" was <strong>the</strong>n discussed by Mrs. H. L. Taylor, Wenona Index; Mrs. J. J.Penny, Murphysboro Independent; M. B. Castle, Sandwich Argus; Richard Butler,Clinton Public; Will Curtis, Kewanee Star; Inez Kennedy, Dixon Sun; W. R. Jewell,Danville News; Mrs. H. N. Patterson, Oquawka Spectator, and J. W. Bailey, PrincetonRepublican.Mrs. H. N.
