TilingIn rooms subject to high or intermittent moisture conditions, therange of boards available for tiling offers flexibility of design andpeace of mind when installed in both wall linings and lightweightpartition systems.Specifically designed for direct tiling applications,Glasroc H TILEBACKER is the ideal substrate for tiling in environmentssubjected to moisture, providing protection for shower enclosures, bathrooms, swimming pool halls and adjacent areas. For areas where intermittent moisture conditions are morecommon, including kitchens and bathrooms, Gyproc moistureresistant grade boards are suitable.Key factslllGlasroc H TILEBACKER hasbeen designed for usein high moistureapplicationsGlasroc H TILEBACKERwill hold tiling systemsup to 32kg/m 2 on wallsand 50kg/m 2 on floorsGyproc moistureresistant grade boardsare suitable for usein low moistureapplicationsGypWall RAPID and RAPID dB Tiling PlusApplicationsShower enclosures, bathrooms, swimming pool halls and adjacent areas.Sector33Sport and leisureHousing33EducationApartment buildings33HealthcareHigh-rise multi-occupancy13 3471

The board can be used on bothwall linings, lightweight partition systems and existing timber floors.Glasroc H TILEBACKER is not a structural grade flooring board and cannotbe used as a walking surface.Where the board is installed using the DriLyner system, ensure theGyproc Dri-Wall Adhesive has set before tiles are applied to the boardsurface. The tolerance on the finished tile surface quoted in BS 5385:Part 1, i.e. 3mm under a 2m straightedge with thin-bed adhesives, issuch that it will reflect very accurately the standard of the backgroundsurface.Moisture resistanceGlasroc H TILEBACKER should not be exposed to running water. Careshould be taken not to over tighten screws when fixing boards and allscrew heads should be fully filled with adhesive. In areas of high and extreme moisture and humidity, extra care shouldbe given to detailing at junctions, perimeter sealing and tiling.Perimeter and junction sealingDesigners must give consideration to the precautions necessary atjunctions to ensure that moisture is not allowed to penetrate or collect.Cut edges of boards must be appropriately sealed / waterproofed atabutments.Tanking systemsIn extreme moisture environments, the exposed surfaces ofGlasroc H TILEBACKER should be treated with a suitable tanking system.Continuity of liningsAll partitions and wall linings should be complete. There should be noomissions to board linings, e.g. behind baths.TilingBefore tiling commences, fully fill all edge joints included in the tilingarea with tile adhesive. Install tiles following the manufacturer’sguidance, using a waterproof tile adhesive. Tiles can be applied directlyto the pre-primed surface of Glasroc H TILEBACKER, ensuring the board isdust free prior to tiling. Ensure tiles are sealed using a waterproof groutand sealant at perimeters.Timber stud external walls or partitionsWhere tiling is specified, designers should ensure that the timber is ofsufficient dimensions to give a stable base for the additional loading. The moisture resistance of the timber should be within the limits given inBS 5268: Structural use of timber - Part 2.Underfloor heating systemsGlasroc H TILEBACKER is suitable for use in conjunction with electricunderfloor heating systems. Glasroc H TILEBACKER is installed as perstandard installation, electric under floor heating system should beinstalled in accordance with manufacturers installation details. Theoperating temperature of the heating system should not exceed 40 o C.133Waterproof sealant should be used around baths or shower trays, between the wall surface and the floor at the base of partition or walllining, to prevent any possible moisture being absorbed by the board core.I F E TI M EW A R R A N T YAlways use genuine branded British Gypsum components to qualify for SpecSure ® lifetime warranty474

T 0844 800 1991 F 0844 561 8816 E bgtechnical.enquiries@bpb.comGuidance for low to medium moisture environmentsPlanning - key factorsGlasroc H TILEBACKER, Gyproc moisture resistant grade boards,Glasroc F MULTIBOARD or Rigidur H are recommended for intermittentmoisture applications, including splashbacks. The tolerance on thefinished tile surface quoted in BS 5385: Part 1, i.e. 3mm under a 2mstraightedge with thin-bed adhesives, is such that it will reflectvery accurately the standard of the background surface.Gypsum undercoats and finish coats are designed to work togetherto achieve full strength and therefore tiles should not be applieddirectly to Thistle undercoats, with the exception of Thistle Dri-Coat.Tiles should not be applied until the background and plaster aredry. Note that Thistle Hardwall and Thistle Tough Coat dry from thesurface, appearing surface dry before they are fully dry throughout.TilingWhere designs include part-tiled areas, e.g. low moistureenvironments, apply a layer of ThistleBond-it prior to the boardbeing plaster skimmed above the line of the tiles. Two coats of Gyproc Drywall Sealer applied to the face of standardgrade plasterboards, with the edges adequately protected frommoisture may also be suitable to receive a tile finish. The applicationof Gyproc Drywall Sealer provides surface water absorptionresistance only, and does not meet the performance requirementsfor moisture resistant grade boards as defined in BS EN 520, typeH1.Perimeter and junction sealingDesigners must give consideration to the precautions necessary atjunctions to ensure that moisture is not allowed to penetrate orcollect. Cut edges of boards must be appropriately sealed /waterproofed at abutments.Waterproof sealant should be used around baths or shower trays, between the wall surface and the floor at the base of partition or walllining, to prevent any possible moisture being absorbed by the boardcore.Continuity of liningsAll partitions and wall linings should be complete. There should beno omissions to board linings, e.g. behind baths.Timber stud external walls or partitionsWhere tiling is specified, designers should ensure that the timber isof sufficient dimensions to give a stable base for the additionalloading. The moisture resistance of the timber should be within thelimits given in BS 5268: Structural use of timber - Part 2.Tiling directly onto plasterboardBefore tiling commences, joints and taper recesses included withinthe tiling area should be filled with tile adhesive.Tiling onto plastered surfacesSkim plastering is not normally specified to Gyproc moistureresistant grade boards. Tiles up to 20kg/m 2 (including adhesive andgrout) can be applied directly to Thistle finish plasters, except wherethe system includes a bonding agent. In this situation the totalweight of tiles and plaster applied over a bonding agent is limited to20kg/m 2 , therefore consideration should be given to tiling directly tothe background. If plastering to provide a background for tiles, avoidpolishing the surface. Polished plaster surfaces should be roughenedand a suitable primer used. Consult the tile adhesive manufacturerfor guidance.Tiles should not be applied directly to Thistle undercoats, with theexception of Thistle Dri-Coat.13For full installation details, refer to the British Gypsum SITE BOOK or visit www.british-gypsum.com475
