The students have all worked very hard to develop and perfect their writing skills in preparation for this important State Assessment. All of our students, teachers and parents in grades 3-­‐5 are working very hard preparing for the FCAT 2.0 Reading, Math, and Science Tests, which will be administered the week of April 15-­‐26. We know that <strong>Quiet</strong> <strong>Waters</strong> <strong>Elementary</strong> will “Tame that Florida CAT!” The “testing bug” is in the air, as all of our ELL students in grades 1-­‐5 will begin group CELLA Testing on March 4 & 5, followed by individual testing in grads K-­‐5. I am confident that the commitment of both teachers and students will bring success to all! We are encouraging all of our students to seek pledges for our Boosterthon Fun Run, which will be held on Thursday, February 14. All proceeds will go towards purchasing technology for our school. Title I Parent TrainingGr. 3-5 Parents“Everything You Want toKnow About the FCAT 2.0”2012-20<strong>13</strong> AnnualCustomer SurveyThe 2012-­‐<strong>13</strong> Annual Customer Survey of Parents, Students, and Teachers has been redesigned and updated in an effort to provide schools high-­‐value information to support continuous improvement of the education climate. Changes to this year’s survey include: • Re-­‐organization and revised survey content that provides more focus on the school environment. • Addition of questions that address specific subject/content areas on the Parent and Student surveys. • Teacher’s survey includes items that address support from school leadership and professional development. • Questions have been added to address parent and family involvement in the schools. • Questions have been added to address the Common Core Standards. During February <strong>11</strong> –March 21 all students in grades three through twelve in Broward County Public <strong>School</strong>s and all teachers will complete the Annual Student and Teacher Survey on-­‐line that has been developed by the school district. As in prior years, the survey will be administered online through Virtual Counselor to all students in grades 3 through 12, all full-­‐time instructional staff, and parents. While all parents will be encouraged to complete the survey online, a paper option will be available for some parents. All responses are confidential. Parents will access the survey at the Virtual Counselor Web site at: www.browardschools.com/virtualcounselor under the Parent Login Link. We are sending home a letter with all of the student’s report cards on February <strong>13</strong>, which will include specific student information for you to log in to Virtual Counselor. Wednesday, February 207:30 amKindergarten Round Up <strong>Quiet</strong> <strong>Waters</strong> <strong>Elementary</strong> <strong>School</strong> will hold a Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday, March 21 at 8:30 am for children who will be entering Kindergarten in August. All children must be five years old on or before September 1, 20<strong>13</strong> and reside in the <strong>Quiet</strong> <strong>Waters</strong> <strong>Elementary</strong> <strong>School</strong> boundaries The Orientation will be held in the school cafeteria. It will include a presentation by our staff describing the kindergarten program and then a visit to a kindergarten classroom. Parents may pick up a registration packet on this morning or may stop by the front office and begin registration beginning on Monday, April 1 between 8:00 am through <strong>11</strong>:00 am and continue through the summer until school begins on August 16, 20<strong>13</strong>. QWE Robotics Team “Getting’ Genarians Groovin” Going to STATE!After bringing home a Second Place Project Award and receiving a bid for the state competitions at the South Florida Regionals at McNicole Middle <strong>School</strong> on Saturday, February 9, our G-­‐Cubed Robotics Team are headed for the state competition. State competition will be held on March 3 in Orlando at the University of Central Florida campus. The Robotics Lego League is an international competition for elementary and middle school students. Each year the contest focuses on a different real-­‐world topic related to the sciences. This year's theme is Senior Solutions. The QWE Team invented an exercise machine for seniors to using the theory of plyometrics to strengthen their agility to prevent them from falling. The team's robot, Kommando-­‐Bot has been designed, built, and programmed to score points in 2.5-­‐minute matches on a themed playing field. Students also learn that "Gracious Professionalism", friendly competition, and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork. Our team's invention is called the Generianator and it helps seniors develop and maintain their agility, balance and hand-­‐eye coordination. Waste Management has invited four schools to participate in the free event featuring environmental displays, bus tours of Monarch Hill landfill and the landfill gas-­‐to-­‐energy plant, free hot dogs and refreshments, and other activities. The company will award PTA funds to the schools with the best participation with a 1 st place prize of $2,000, then $1,500, $1,000 and $500. Monarch Hill is located on Wiles Road just west of Powerline Road. Mark Your Calendars-­‐ more information will be coming! Complete Streets Poster Winners Honored Congratulations are extended to the following QWE students who participated in the “Complete Streets” Poster contest sponsored by the City of Deerfield Beach Planning & Zoning Division. The posters were to depict streets to make them safer and more inviting for pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users. The students were asked: “When you think of a street that you enjoy walking or riding your bike on, what does it look like?” The City of Deerfield Beach displayed all of the posters at City Hall for the week of January 7 th -­‐ <strong>11</strong> th and they were open to the public for voting. The Mayor presented certificates of appreciation to all the students that participated and 1 st place ribbons to one poster from each grade at the City Commission meeting on January 15 th . All the posters were displayed at the Festival of the Arts from January 25th-­‐27 th . Decisions regarding promotion and retention are based on state law and criteria defined in <strong>School</strong> Board Policy 6000.1 and apply to all kindergarten students; all first and second grade students who take the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT); and all students who take the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). This includes students with disabilities and limited English proficient (LEP) students. We’re raising funds for Technology The Boosterthon Fun Run is a nine-­‐day program that kicked-­‐off on Tuesday, February 5 with a schoolwide pep rally.
