PRODUCTION NOTESMK12 is always happy to find inspirationin all things copyright-free, and their latestventure, FOLLOW THE SUN, is no exception.Created at MK12’s Kansas City-based animationstudio, it concerns a couple of hot dogs, a bag ofpotato chips, and other assorted snack itemsas they are besieged by the end times.FOLLOW THE SUN is an homage and/oraffront to a great American tradition: theIntermission Reel. Those who weren’t makingout in the back of the family Buick betweenfilms at the drive-in will remember them:poorly-spliced, underexposed & overplayedgrindhouse reels of sickly green hot dogs, unprovoked pizza-groping, ice cream sundaeswith a vomit of pale, lifeless toppings, and perversesight gags featuring animated snacks in PG-13scenarios. MK12 interested themselves in thisformat, and envisioned its slightly darker, butperhaps more-to-the-point, R-rated cousin. While inspired by this format, everyframe of FOLLOW THE SUN is original. Over thecourse of the production, MK12 became expertsin stop-frame potato chip animation, cherrycordial incineration, slow-motion sno-conebloodbaths and gumdrop manslaughter.Months before, MK12 met cel-frameanimator and CalArts wunderkind TJ Fuller, who agreed to collaborate with them on theproject. In all, TJ contributed over 900 originalillustrations to the film, often sendingdrawings along in the early morning hours justas decent folk were getting up. MK12 would takethese illustrations and place them into setsdesigned in their Kansas City studio, and thosescenes were then cut into a larger intermissionreel, featuring a cast of live-action and stopframe characters.
