Twilight and earlydawn are very tranquiland meditative times. It is neither light nordark. It is a time ofgreat anticipation as towhat the change willbring. Will the darkness prevail to create adreary depressing day or give rise tosome light and create a new day filledwith brightness and renewed vision? Will the dawn reveal some terrible stuffhere to fore hidden or bring with it newand challenging opportunities? The factis, we know the past but haven’t a clueabout the reality of the future, astartling reality to contemplate. This is my mindset this coming NewYear, as we once again will have theprivilege of ‘not celebrating’ NewYear’s. With plans P.G. to be In Israel,it’s not an official Holiday, nocelebrations and in Jerusalem inparticular you actually lose yourcertification if you even think abouthosting a New Year’s Eve event. In BetShemesh, we don’t anticipate anyfireworks at midnight. New Year’s isRosh Hashana. Jan. 1 st is just anotherday on the calendar. And so, I think I finally understand themessage on ‘not celebrating’ the NewYear, Jan.1 st .No! I have not become ‘frummed out’.It’s just that non-celebration, is sorealistic we never think about it in theseterms. Think about it: New YEAR, butit’s just starting. What is there tocelebrate? If you want to celebrateanything then celebrate yoursuccessful completion of the past year. But truthfully, no one wants tocelebrate the PAST YEAR, only NEWYEAR’S.I am always amazed how the press orTV can reduce a total year oftumultuous events into a page or twoor a few minutes of highlights. Eventswhich riveted our attention for days onend, a devastating storm named Sandywhich was literally life changing for somany, Operation Pillar of Defense asa result of months of missilesshowered upon civilians in SouthernIsrael and was spreading northward, aUnited Nations General Assembly votewhich puts Israel in a difficult way, theongoing struggling economy and ofcourse the Hockey Hunger and somuch more, all of these reduced to amere dot in our memory banks as weprepare to turn the page to celebratethe start of a NEW YEAR. Thestatement being made, consciously ornot is: the past year is a mere blip onour memory chips. It is our hope thatthe new year will mark a return to thenormal, business as usual. As much as we would like, there is no‘return to normal’ because ‘normal’ haschanged drastically. Visit any airport, public building or even take note of thegreater police presence on the streetsin many cities. ‘Normal’ today includesscreening, cameras, random searchesand the right photo ID. Whether we likeit or not, ‘Normal’ is not the way it usedto be.A teacher once placed a big sheet ofwhite paper in front of the class andthen made a black dot in the center, asking the students to write down whatthey saw on the sheet. Smiling aboutsuch a simple assignment they all4Tevet/Adar 5773

wrote—a black dot. ‘And what else?’asked the teacher, now getting a blankstare from the entire class. Theteacher finally explained: ‘It’s true thatthere is a black dot but what about thevast expanse of white that can still befilled in with beautiful pictures andwords? Is there not something ‘NEW’that can be introduced to at leastbalance out the black dot?’True, there is no erasing last year’sblack dots but we can in our ownminds, balance it out with the manygood things with which we wereblessed. The fact that we celebrate theclose of 2012 means that life itself hasbeen a winner despite the challengeswhich abound. And how about thatSimcha, be it our own, or just havingbeen able to share in someone else’sSimcha; add to that some nachas fromour children even if it is just their smile. In other words, in the twilight of thetransition of one year into the next wecan each fill in the white space bycounting our blessings so as to offsetthe black dots that haunt us and whichwe wish to forget. There are things ineach of our lives worthy of celebration.Better we should celebrate the PASTYEAR instead of just the unknown NewYear. Look back. There is what tocelebrate. As we enter a new year perhaps wecan fill in the new blank spaces withsome of the following thoughts:When the door of happinesscloses, another opens:Not to fixate on looks, they candeceive. Not to fixate on wealth, even thatfades away.Better to share life with someonewho makes you smile,Because it takes only a smile tomake a dark day seem bright. The happiest people don’tnecessarily have the best ofeverything,They just make the best ofeverything that comes along. And perhaps a final prayer for each ofus, to place the black dots of previousyears in the background of this comingyear’s canvas of life:May we have enough happiness tomake us sweet, enough trials to makeus strong, enough sorrow to keep ushuman and enough hope to make ushappy.I wish each of you and your families, from Jerusalem, Mazel Tov on the OLDYEAR and best wishes to do evenbetter in the NEW YEAR.Dr. Mordecai E. “MAGIC ENTANGLEMENT”Sir James Fraser, author of the anthropological classic "The GoldenBough" once formulated the second principle of magic as follows:"that things which have once been in contact with each othercontinue to act on each other at a distance after the physical contacthas been severed." At first that seems magical indeed, contrary to our experience of theworld. But modern physics agrees. The quantum theory of entanglement teaches thatwhen two particles enter into a state of quantum entanglement they lose theirindividual identities and act as a unified system. Any change to one will be felt byanother, even if they are light years apart. What is true of particles is true of people. We continue to influence one another, inspireone another, both close and far. Joseph in Egypt was influenced by his brothers faraway in Canaan. Once united, they would forever be entangled.Rabbi Akiva left his wife Rachel to study for many years. When he returned he movedhis students out of the way to greet her, insisting "Whatever I am is due to her." Shelived with him in absence. We meet and part; we live mobile lives. Yet those whom we have touched and thosewho have touched us, endure as a principle of magic, as a quantum entanglement.I write all of these thoughts as an old contact (a student of mine) reaches out to me.Due to the wonders of Facebook I once again meet up with someone across the worldand across a period of time that must date back close to 15 years. People move on, findfortunes in other countries, meet destiny in different parts of the world – but once acontact is made; a true contact – that can last forever. So ask yourself today: who inspired me? Who has touched my life? Who made a realdifference? And now realise that those people remain with you. Whether they arephysically still around, (perhaps you see them regularly), or perhaps you haven’t seenthem in a long time. Alternatively, maybe those people who made the deepestimpression on you are no longer here. But consider, in the recesses of your heart, yourmind, your memories – they still exist. They are still here. Whether it be through thelesson they taught you, the experience they shared with you, the inspiration you stillcarry with you. That is entanglement. That is the sense of someone coming into yourlife and never departing. In the words of Dylan Thomas: Though lovers be lost, loveshall not; And death shall have no dominion. Perhaps we could paraphrase thissentiment and say that – once we meet and are touched by others who inspire – theynever really leave us.Stay warm this season and remember, in the dark of winter, in the cold of Montreal –we are never truly alone.Rabbi Mark Fishman6Tevet/Adar 5773

Hebrew Academy NewsWith the holidays behind us for yet another year, the students and teachersat Hebrew Academy returned to the fundamentals of their studies. If the wallsof our classrooms could speak, they would tell wonderful stories of Hebrewbeing learned, Tefillot being sung, and Torah stories being taught.Over these last few months, our students and their parents also enjoyed somevery special events.November was Jewish Book Month whenJewish authors and books with Jewishcontent are celebrated. The HebrewAcademy students were fortunate tobe entertained by storyteller JenniferSailofsky. She delighted us withfamiliar tales and a few new ones.Kitot Daled & Hey classes created a beautiful bulletin board for Jewish BookMonth. Their book reports were really so interesting! In addition, Kitot Daled & Hey, along with their parents, had their first stopon their “Jewish Journey with Rabbi Zeitz”. They learned about their namesand birthdates, in Hebrew, and the differences between the solar and lunarcalendars. Rabbi Zeitz also enlightened us about how when and why the Jewishholidays are celebrated both in Israel and abroad and shared many otherinteresting facts about our Jewish beginnings. Stay tuned as our “JewishJourney” continues! In case you didn’t hear, December was filled with the spirit of Chanukah in ourafternoon school. All the students learned Chanukah lessons – topics included the Maccabees, olive oil, customs, traditions, miracles and more. Studentsespecially enjoyed the outdoorcandle lighting ceremony led byRabbi Zeitz.Jan./Feb. 201313

With IsraelNU ???? SO WHAT’S NEW IN ISRAEL ?Welcome to the column. Its purpose is to share information about life inIsrael that is not part of yet another emotional newspaper headline. Whatare Israelis are talking about over a coffee?....Enjoy….IN DINING IN TEL AVIV????Tony Blair, Pink and Jean-Claude Van Damme are among a rosterof celebs who’ve sampled Chef Aviv Moshe’s dishes at Messanear the Tel Aviv Cinematheque and recommendations by Italianand French restaurant critics including Gilles Pudlowski. Aftereight years, Messa is still getting attention as one of nine “must todolist” destinations. The Lonely Planet review gushes: “More thana restaurant with impeccable haute cuisine, Messa has a magicalquality that raises the restaurant experience to a new level Chef Moshe explains he fashioned Messalike upscale bar-restaurants in London and New York.IN HOT-AIR BALLOONING IN ISRAEL???Jews into hot-air ballooning??? Sounds kind of “goish” to me!Not one, but two hot-air ballooning festivals took to the Israeliskies during the Sukkot holiday this year – one in the north andone in the south – for the viewing pleasure of vacationing Israelisand tourists. The Israeli hot-air balloon company SkyTrek usedits balloon to raise awareness for Jordan River Village, a newretreat for children suffering from cancer and other seriousillnesses.TOP 5 WAYS ISRAELI SCIENTISTS ARE BATTLING BREAST CANCER???One out of every eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. It is the most commonlydiagnosed non-skin cancer in women worldwide, and also strikes thousands of men. Though thethree areas with the highest breast cancer rates are Western Europe, Australia/New Zealand andNorthern Europe, Israel has taken a leading role in researching causes and treatments. The BreastCancer Research Foundation’s very first international research grant was awarded in 2001 to ShaareZedek Medical Center’s Dr. Ephrat Levy-Lahad to do a comprehensive Israeli Breast Cancer Study, now an international model for genetic breast cancer prevention screening.18Tevet/Adar 5773

1. IceSense: IceSense freezes out breast tumors. The novel Israeli medical device IceSense3,made by IceCure, is already helping American doctors destroy benign breast lumps byfreezing them.2. RUTH: The Israeli company Real Imaging offers a no-radiation, no-contact alternative tomammography pioneered by electro-optical engineer Boaz Arnon and named in memoryof his mother, who died of breast cancer in 2004. RUTH uses a new trademarked platformthat enables automatic quantitative analysis of 3D and infrared signals emitted fromcancerous and benign breast tissue. Results are interpreted by computer, withunprecedented accuracy in patients of all ages — 90 percent as opposed to 80% formammography. Thousands of women have been involved in clinical trials for RUTH since2007. The next step is CE and FDA approval.3. MarginProbe: Dune Medical, a graduate of the Misgav Venture Accelerator, in Junereceived pre-market approval from the US Food and Drug Administration forMarginProbe, its trademarked system that uses electromagnetic waves to identify possiblycancerous tissue on the edges of a breast tumor in real time..4. Monoclonal antibodies: Herceptin, a frequently prescribed drug for blocking the chemicalsignals that stimulate uncontrolled growth of breast cancer cells, is one of an advancedclass of pharmaceuticals called monoclonal antibody drugs. Currently, these drugs must beadministered together with chemotherapy. .5. Better biomarkers: Tel Aviv University PhD student Livnat Jerby won a prestigious 2012Dan David Scholarship for performing the first genome-scale study of the metabolicprogression of breast cancer — an algorithm that can profile the traits of each individualpatient’s tumor. These profiles help in studying the underlining mechanisms of the disease, classifying patients according to their prognosis and identifying potential metabolicbiomarkers as a non-invasive, cost-effective means for early diagnosis and monitoringtreatment efficiency.STEVE BALLMER’S VISIT???So who’s Steve Ballmer? He is software giant Microsoft’s CEO, and he recently visited MicrosoftIsrael shortly after the launch of Windows 8. Ballmer was set to attend events organized byMicrosoft Israel and its local development center in Israel. Purim is one of the most joyousand fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when theJewish people living in Persia were savedfrom extermination. The story of Purim is told in the Book ofEsther. The heroes of the story are Esther, a beautiful young Jewishwoman living in Persia, and her cousin Mordecai. Esther was taken to thehouse of Ahasuerus, King of Persia, to become part of his harem. KingAhasuerus loved Esther and made her queen, but the king did not knowthat Esther was a Jew.The villain of the story is Haman, an arrogant, egotistical advisor to theking. Haman hated Mordecai because Mordecai refused to bow down toHaman, so Haman planned to exterminate all of the Jews.Mordecai persuaded Esther to speak to the king on behalf of the Jewishpeople. This was a dangerous thing for Esther to do. Esther fasted forthree days to prepare herself, then went into the king. He welcomed her.She told him of Haman's plot against her people. The Jewish people weresaved, and Haman and his ten sons were hanged on the gallows. The Fast of EstherWe fast on the day before Purim. This year, because the day before Purimis Shabbat, we fast the Thursday beforehand on February 21 st . The Fastbegins at 5:30 am and ends 6:01 pm. Services 6:30 am and 5:15 pm.Torah Reading of "Zachor"On the Shabbat before Purim, February 23rd a special reading is held inthe synagogue of the Torah section called Zachor ("Remember"), toremember the deeds of Amalek (Haman's ancestor) who sought to destroythe Jewish people.20Tevet/Adar 5773

Purim CustomsPurim is celebrated on the 14th day of Adar. The word "Purim" means"lots" and refers to the lottery that Haman used to choose the date for themassacre. The primary commandment related to Purim is to hear the reading of theBook of Esther. The book of Esther is commonly known as theMegillah, which means scroll. It is customary to boo, hiss, stamp feet andrattle graggers (noisemakers) whenever the name of Haman is mentionedin the service. The purpose of this custom is to "blot out the name ofHaman."We send food portions to friends - Mishloach Manot. The reason forthis mitzvah is to ensure that everyone has sufficient food for the Purimfeast.Giving for the needy - Matanot La'evyonim is a year-round responsibilitybut on Purim it is a special mitzvah to remember the poorPurim should be celebrated with a special festive meal, at which familyand friends gather together to eat, drink and be merry and rejoice in thePurim spirit. It is a mitzvah to drink wine or other inebriating drinks at thismeal, but drunkenness is discouraged.A common treat at this time of year is hamentaschen. These triangular fruit-filled cookies are supposed torepresent Haman's three-cornered hat.It is customary to hold carnival-like celebrations on Purim, to performplays and parodies.Jan./Feb. 201321
