7. The evidence does not inform how ARTs will impact the health care systemwith changes in the prevalence of infertility. For policy making and planning,it would be insightful to estimate the cost impact of ARTs with fluctuations inthe infertility rate and resulting changes in the demand for ARTs services.ConclusionMultiple embryo transfer IVF is the single greatest contributor to prematurityand long term health complications because of the resulting twins and HOMbirths. 27 The evidence indicates that the most effective approach for reducing costsassociated with ARTs is to reduce the number of embryo transfers per IVF cycle. In Alberta, SET could have potentially saved $5,778,141 to the Alberta health caresystem. However, compared to multiple embryo transfer IVF, greater numbersof SET cycles are required to produce adequate birth rates. Thus, if specificcomponents of ARTS such as SET IVF are to be publicly funded, cost savings willbe offset by the increased number of SET cycles required to maintain acceptablesingleton birth rates.Comparing the cost of conducting additional SET cycles to the cost savings fromreducing multiple births can be provided with further analysis. Such an analysiscan also incorporate other relevant factors including the infertility rate, publicdemand for ARTs services, costs of ARTs services and the health services costs forshort and long term health outcomes.References1.
