The North / South Language Body Annual Report & Accounts 2009

Scríobh LeabharThis project, organised by Clár na Leabhar Gaeilge, involves primary schoolchildren who are asked to write a book, which gives them an opportunity toget experience of the creativity, the skills and, of course, the fun involved inwriting and publishing your own book. Seven Education Centres participatedin the project in the 2008 / 2009 school year : Mayo Education Centre;Galway Education Centre; The Teachers Centre; Gortahork; BlackrockEducation Centre; Cork Education Support Centre; West Cork EducationCentre and Tralee Education Centre. Schools in Northern Ireland also tookpart in the project in the 2008 / 2009 school year with support from theEducation and Library Boards and the Áisaonad. A special occasion wasorganised for each Education Centre and in Northern Ireland prizes werepresented to some of the children who took part in the project at thoseoccasions. The project was an outstanding success and more than 9,000children took part in it. A compact disc of some of the stories which werewritten in the project in the 2008 / 2009 school year was launched inNovember 2009 and a copy of that compact disc was presented to everyprimary school in the country.The project was expanded again for the 2009 / 2010 school year. Thefollowing centres are taking part in it:Kilkenny Education Centre; Mayo Education Centre; Galway EducationCentre; The Teachers Centre; Gortahork; Blackrock Education Centre; CorkEducation Support Centre; West Cork Education Centre and TraleeEducation Centre. Schools in Northern Ireland are also taking part in theproject in the 2009 / 2010 school year with support from the Education andLibrary Boards.There is an account of the marketing work involved in Scríobh Leabhar underthe main objective ‘Communication.’Terminology in Language AquisitionForas na Gaeilge confirmed the importance of terminology to the aquisitionof Irish with the work below carried out by an Coiste Téarmaíochta during2008, including:Advisory service: around 8,000 requests for terminology and wording advicefrom the public, including translators, were dealt with.Conception of terminology: more than 5,500 new terms based onmiscellaneous enquiries from the public, were discussed.Review of terms: around 4,000 terms were reviewed or harmonised.Editing collections of terms: editing was carried out on 13 collections ofspecialised terminology.Publication of terminology: 9 collections, between dictionaries and lists ofspecialised terms were issued on Foras na Gaeilge’s site and around 2,000additional concepts were inserted in the terminology database, focal.ie.Miscellaneous terminology: around 8,000 requests for terminology orwording advice were sent to the office of the Committee throughout the yearfrom Departments of State, local authorities, public services and companies,translators in Ireland and in EU institutions, from the IATE project and fromthe public in general.23
