New Prague Area Directory / June 2013 5History of New PragueThe New Prague area was settled by Czech and Bavarianimmigrants in 1856. They cut trees, plowed fields and drainedswamps in a portion of what was called the “Big Woods,”which covered a large portion of southern Minnesota. Thesettlement was founded in the same year that Minnesota becamea state. The new residents were an industrious group who were determinedto make their new land a great place to live.By the late 1860s, the settlement boasted a school, severalstores, a post office, blacksmith shop, two brickyards, a smallparish house and a number of cabins clustered around thecity’s first church. In June, 1877, the first railroad car arrived in the settlement, which was called Praha (Prague). That was the sameyear the settlement was incorporated into a village. Eventually, the city’s name was changed to “Nova Praha,” whicheventually was translated to the English equivalent, “NewPrague.”With the arrival of the railroad, New Prague became centerof trade for neighboring communities. The community grew and prospered. Industry flourished inthe late 1800s. The flour milling industry would have a profoundimpact on the community. In 1896, F.A. Bean startedthe New Prague Flour Milling Company. The business grewand Bean eventually operated mills across the U.S., Canadaand South America, and the company’s headquarters movedto Minneapolis. New Prague Flour Milling Company laterbecame International Milling Company and then InternationalMultifoods. The mill was sold to ConAgra Foods in the1980s and is still in operation.Other businesses have thrived. In 1963 a business wasstarted to make cryogenic tanks. Minnesota Valley Engineeringgrew to have operations across the country, as well as inEurope and Asia. The business was purchased by Chart Industriesin 1999 and remains New Prague’s largest manufacturingemployer. Chart recently completed a major plant expansionin New Prague.New Prague has always had people with vision, who werewilling to put forth the efforts to construct a hospital, churches, schools, a library, nursing home, golf club, communitypool and other public amenities. As the community continuesto grow, possibilities for the future seem endless.M V E407 7th Street NW | New Prague, MN952-758-44841 9 6 3 – 2 0 1 3Celebrating 50 Years in theNew Prague Community1978250 New Prague employees415 Worldwide employees2013550 New Prague employees5,000 Worldwide employees

18 New Prague Area Directory / June 2013ArtsThe Arts have long been, and continue to be a source ofpride in New Prague. The city has a tradition steeped inmusic, dating back to the community’s early days and itsCzech heritage. There is an old saying “To be Czech is to be a musician,”and evidence of Czech music can be found today, with theCzech Area Concertina Club, which meets regularly in NewPrague. The city has an active community band that plays invenues around the area and also is home to a communitybasedchoir, “Hymnus,” that sings sacred music and has performedin New York, Rome and London.Even in the schools, the musical tradition can be seen witha thriving vocal and instrumental music program at the highschool and middle school.Visual arts also play an important role in the community. One of the most visible art projects dates back to the 1980s,when a community revitalization program encouraged downtownbusinesses to have murals depicting New Prague’s historypainted on the sides of their buildings. While some ofthese murals have since been covered up or met with a wreckingball, many of them can still be seen today. The New Prague Arts Council supports various artistic endeavorsthroughout the community. One of the most visibleprojects, done in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerceand Community Education, involved a Community IntersectionsGrant in 2008 by the Metro Regional Arts Council. The grant helped fund four public art projects to enhance thedowntown business community. These projects included:• “Pride,” a stained glass piece by Rose Mary James that depictsNew Prague’s Czech culture, landmarks and traditions.•“Towering to our Future,” created by Kirsten Dahl-Shetka,features a tower that will hold sculpture panels created by seniorcitizens and youth from the community. The tower is locatedat Philipp’s Park, on the city’s west end.•Amural restoration on the wall of the former Remes Drugbuilding at Main Street and First Ave. NE dating to the early19th century was recreated to highlight a portion of the city’shistory.•Artist Cindi Gordon used local inspiration to create a seriesof paintings titled “Seasons of Tradition.” Each work is 48 x60 inches, and hand-painted depicting Czech-inspired traditionalthemes and characters, representing a single season. The Domaci Czech Dancers promote the Czech heritage ofthe community by performing at area nursing homes andcommunity functions. They also serve as ambassadors for thecommunity at festivals throughout the Upper Midwest.New Prague has a thriving theatrical tradition, with twocommunity theaters and a new professional theater groupbased in the area. The schools also have strong theatre departments, with the all-school musical often selling out eachof its performances."Towering to our Future" is an art tower in Philipp'sPark that holds sculpture panels created by senior citizensand youth from the community.

30 New Prague Area Directory / June 2013WorshipReligion has played an important role in the history of NewPrague. A group of Czech immigrants landed in St. Paul in1856, looking for land to settle on. They were given directionsto a settlement near St. Cloud by the bishop of St. Paul. However, they either misunderstood the directions or boardedthe wrong steamboat and ended up in Shakopee. Fromthere, they were directed south to an area recently settled bya Bavarian immigrant, Anton Philipp. Legend has it thatPhilipp was initially wary of the newcomers, but warmed upto them when he saw them make the sign of the cross beforea meal. Many of the early immigrants were Catholic, and the newcomersestablished St. Wenceslaus parish - named after thepatron saint of Czechoslovakia - in 1857. The parish grewrapidly and several buildings were erected to serve the growingpopulation. Finally, in 1907, the current church was built. It was one of the largest churches in the state at the time ofits construction, and the building is on the National Registerof Historic Places. A remodeling project in the 1990s helpedrestore many of the original features of the church. As the community has grown, many other churches havemoved into the New Prague community. Two of the oldest areCommunity Baptist Church and Holy Trinity LutheranChurch.
