Enhanced Performance in LoopRestoration ApplicationsIntelliRupter enhances the performance of existingloop restoration schemes using conventionalreclosers. It eliminates the need to subject thealternate circuit in the loop to a fault when closing thetie. Just replace the recloser in the tie position withan IntelliRupter to take advantage of PulseClosingTechnology.Even greater benefits can be achieved in loopschemes where all protective points use IntelliRupter. Its fast interrupters and accurate sensing and controlenable significant reductions in protection margins. With the negligible effect pulseclosing has on sourcesidecustomers, the system can be segmented asneeded without sacrificing protection. And with IntelliRupters protecting the loop, customers won’t experience voltage sags on theirgood circuit during testing of a faulted circuit!Complaints and costly claims will be greatly reduced.Improved ReliabilityIntelliRupter improves reliability on both loopand radial circuits by overcoming the limits ofconventional coordination methods. Series-connectedIntelliRupters can be configured so that after onedevice opens to isolate a fault, those downstreamwith the same settings also open. When power returns, the IntelliRupters usepulsefinding to restore service. This techniqueautomatically recovers from situations wherean upstream device overreaches or otherwisemiscoordinates with a downstream device. Here’san example . . .The feeder in Figure 7 includes a recloser, A1,and an IntelliRupter, A2. Due to tight or impropercoordination, both devices trip in response to a faultdownstream of IntelliRupter.Figure 7. Pulsefinding with an upstream recloser. When the recloser closes, in the next step ofits operating sequence, it won’t see the fault. So itremains closed. IntelliRupter, upon sensing returnof voltage, pulsecloses. The pulses are too short toinitiate time-overcurrent timing of the recloser, so therecloser won’t trip.If the fault is no longer present during thepulseclosing sequence, IntelliRupter closes. Thesystem is fully restored. If, however, the fault persists, IntelliRupter locksout. But service is restored to customers servedfrom the feeder section between the recloser andIntelliRupter. Those customers only experience amomentary outage from tripping of the recloser. If A2 were a recloser instead of an IntelliRupter, the system wouldn’t be able to recover from themiscoordination between A1 and A2 because eachreclose operation puts full fault current on the system. Both devices would again time and trip. Ultimately,A1would lock out. With IntelliRupter, more series-connectedprotective devices can be applied, for bettersectionalization. Each pulsecloses, in turn, to verifythat its line segment is unfaulted . . . then closes torestore service. Only the IntelliRupter closest to thefault locks out. IntelliRupters never close into a fault.Cold-load inrush is mitigated because only one linesegment is energized with each closing. IntelliRuptersdon’t need to communicate with each other to takeadvantage of this enhanced coordination and inrushmitigation. For more information on the enhanced performanceand improved reliability provided by IntelliRupter, see“ADVANCING THE STATE OF LOOPED DISTRIBUTIONFEEDERS” on S&C’s website, at:http://www.sandc.com/edocs_pdfs/edoc_046279.pdfA New Concept in ControlsIntelliRupter is available with several kinds ofcontrol groups. Each offers easy configuration andoperation—and examination of waveforms andevents—using secure wireless communication to anearby laptop computer. The control group includes a protection andcontrol module and a communication module. SeeFigure 8. This flexible, low-maintenance arrangementoffers excellent immunity to surges and noise inducedby normal power line events such as faults andlightning strikes, and—in the case of IntelliRupter foroverhead system applications—minimizes pole clutter.IntelliRupter is powered from the distribution line, through the integral power module(s) or the externalpower supply, if furnished. The protection and control module provides pointon-waveclosing to minimize asymmetric fault currentand inrush current. It features a complete set ofprotection and control functions including:■■Simultaneous independent directional phaseground, negative-sequence, and sensitive-earthtime-overcurrent, instantaneous-overcurrent, anddefinite-time elements,8

IntelliRupter installation typically takes about twohours . . . or as little as one hour after your crews getexperienced.Compare the clean-looking IntelliRupter installationwith that of a conventional recloser. See Figure 10.The photos really tell the story.Figure 11. IntelliRupter has no external control or sensorcables.Figure 10. Typical conventional recloser installation.Control cables are vulnerable to damage from ice, rodents, and vandals. And sensor cables increaseexposure to damage from lightning and power surges, and complicate grounding.IntelliRupter eliminates these potential problems. Itdoesn’t have any external control or sensor cables!Compare the cable-less IntelliRupter in Figure 11with the many-cabled conventional recloser inFigure 12.Figure 12. Conventional recloser has myriad externalcontrol and sensor cables.11

If a PC isn’t available, IntelliRupter can be openedand closed and hot-line tags set using a hookstick, from the ground or a bucket truck, as shown inFigure 15.Should module replacement ever be necessary,it’s easily performed as well, as shown in Figure 16.There’s no need to reconfigure IntelliRupter . . . amemory module in the base remembers allthe settings.Figure 15. IntelliRupter can be opened and closed andhot-line tags set using a hookstick.Figure 16. Protection and control module andcommunication module are easy to change out,if replacement is ever necessary.13
