RelaxRefreshRenewImmerse yourself inmineral hot springsMineral hot spring therapy has long been a source of naturalwellness. For hundreds of years many cultures have used hot mineralwaters for various therapeutic effects. People believe that there arecurative properties associated with hot mineral water and refer to thenatural hot springs as "healing waters." It is known that hot springs arebeneficial for relieving conditions such as arthritis as well as for easingmuscle tension, releasing toxins from the body and providing wholebody relaxation. While visiting Skamania County, you will have the chance to sootheyour senses and renew your spirit in natural mineral hot spring waterthat dates back to its discovery in 1876. Mr. Isadore St. Martin, whileon a hunting expedition noticed steam along the river and found hotsprings bubbling up among the rocks. St. Martin took his wife, Margaret, who suffered from neuralgia, to the hot springs. News of her reliefspread rapidly and people began to arrive in great numbers to bathein the springs. In 1897, St. Martin began construction on the historicHotel St. Martin, completing it in 1901. The cabins and bathhouse wereadded in 1923 and are still being used today. Carson Mineral HotSprings Resort, under new ownership, boasts an 18-hole golf course,28 newly remodeled rooms, a beautiful club house, restaurant andlounge, with a new 39 room hotel opening soon.Moffett Hot Springs was first discovered in 1880 by an old miner,Mr. R.J. Snow, who shared his secret with Mr. Thomas Moffett, whobuilt a lodge on the property in 1881. Mr. Moffett profited by bottling thewater and it became a thriving business. Moffett Hot Springs changedits name to Bonneville Hot Springs in 1934. The campground andresort closed down in the early 70s. By 1975 a new hotel, dining room, mineral bath building, 12 new cabins, a swimming pool and 75 campsitesoccupied approximately 38 acres. Although itstretches from the Idaho border to the Pacific Ocean, the route’s 47 mile traverse through Skamania County is often called its most scenic section. The highway crosses the Cascade Mountains near sea level, allowing year-round transit and easy access to four seasons of outdoor beauty and activity.Historical Events that Helped Shape the Columbia River GorgeAs you travel through the Columbia River Gorge, you willsee the aftermath of thousands of volcanic eruptions withpiled layers of volcanic ash, lava and mud flows. This eventcreated the slippery red clay and greenish rocks visible onthe canyon walls today. You can still see the 14 major peaksand cinder cones that form the Cascade Range includingMount Adams and Mount Hood, which are both dormantvolcanoes. Mount St. Helens has awakened from herdormancy and as you most likely know, she experienced amajor eruption in 1980.The largest floods to ever occur on the planet were theLake Missoula Floods, also known as the “Ice Age Floods.”During the last ice age, glaciers covered much of Canada. One lobe of ice grew southward, blocking the Clark ForkValley in Idaho. This 2,000-foot-high ice dam blocked theriver, creating a lake that stretched for hundreds of miles.Eventually, water traveled under the ice dam. The waterdrained out of the lake in two to three days, floodingeastern Washington. The first rush of the Missoula Flood came into thelower Columbia River Gorge with speeds approaching anestimated 60 mph. It was a large wall of ice- and dirt-filledwater that rushed down the Columbia River drainage, across northern Idaho and eastern and central Washington, through the Columbia River gorge, down into Oregon'sWillamette Valley, and finally poured into the Pacific Ocean.During a period of 2,500 years as many as 100 of these iceage floods scoured the Gorge. Through the years the powerof the flowing water of the Columbia River created a deepgash into the volcanic rock of the Cascade Range. For more information about the Columbia River Gorge:www.iafi.org | www.fs.fed.us/r6/columbia/forest/www.skamania.org /// SKAMANIA COUNTY VISITORS GUIDE 201327

photo credit: Harry Troeger, www.harrysdesign.comThe Legend of the Bridge of the GodsLong before recorded history began, Native Americanlegend says the Great Spirit built a bridge of stone that was a gift ofgreat magnitude. The Great Spirit, named Manito, placed a wise oldwoman named Loo-Wit, on the bridge as its guardian. He then sent toearth his three sons, Multnomah, the warrior; Klickitat (Mount Adams),the totem-maker; and Wyeast (Mount Hood), the singer. Peace lived inthe valley until beautiful Squaw Mountain moved in between Klickitatand Wyeast. The beautiful woman mountain grew to love Wyeast, butalso thought it fun to flirt with his big brother, Klickitat. Soon the brothersbegan to quarrel over everything, stomping their feet and throwingfire and rocks at each other. Finally, they threw so many rocks onto theBridge of the Gods and shook the earth so hard that the bridge brokein the middle and fell in to the river.Klickitat, who was the larger of the two mountains, won the fight, andWyeast admitted defeat, giving over all claim to beautiful Squaw Mountain. In a short time, Squaw Mountain became very heartbroken for shetruly loved Wyeast. One day she fell at Klickitat’s feet and sank into adeep sleep from which she never awakened. She is now known as theSleeping Beauty and lies where she fell, just west of Mount Adams.During the war between Wyeast and Klickitat, Loo-Wit, the guardianof the bridge, tried to stop the fight. When she failed, she stayed at herpost and did her best to save the bridge from destruction, although shewas badly burned and battered by hot rocks. When the bridge fell, she fell with it. The Great Spirit placed heramong the great snow mountains, but being old in spirit, she did notdesire companionship and so withdrew from the main range to settleby herself far to the west. Today you will find her as Mount St. Helens, the youngest mountain in the Cascades.Scientists say that about 1,000 years ago, the mountain on theWashington side of the Columbia River, near what is now the townof Stevenson, caved off, blocking the river. The natural dam was highenough to cause a great inland sea covering the inland prairies as faraway as Idaho. For many years’ natural erosion weakened the dam andfinally washed it out. These waters of the inland sea rushed out, tearingaway more of the earth and rocks until a great tunnel was formed underthe mountain range leaving a natural bridge over the water. The bridgewas called “The Great Cross Over” and is now named “The Bridge ofthe Gods.”Legend: An unverifiable story handed down by tradition from earlier timesand popularly accepted as historical.Material for this article provided by the Port of Cascade Locks, Oregon.ART GALLERIESRiver House Art Gallery & Studio 17Soderberg Studio & Bronze Works 17ARTS & ENTERTAINMENTSkamania Performing Arts Foundation 17BANK | FINANCESLacamas Credit Union 45BOAT CRUISESSternwheeler Columbia Gorge 40BONNEVILLE LOCK AND DAMBonneville Lock and Dam (Fish Ladders) 37CAMPINGThe Resort at Skamania Coves 13Wind Mountain RV Park & Lodge 19CHAMBER OF COMMERCESkamania County Chamber of Commerce 3CLOTHINGA. boutique 22COFFEE | WINE SHOPSA. boutique 22Robbie's Coffee House 11Vibe Café & Espresso Bar 11Whistle Stop Espresso & Deli 19ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COUNCILSkamania County Economic Development 45FAIRS | FESTIVALSSkamania County Fair | Bluegrass Festival 7FloristLiquid Sunshine 19GiftsA. boutique 22GOLFBeacon Rock Golf Course 30Skamania Lodge 2Advertiser IndexGROCERIES | GAS | CONVENIENCE STORESA&J Select Market 23Carson General Store 23Home Valley Store 19Wind River Market 23GUIDED TOURSMartin's Gorge Tours 17HEALTH AND WELLNESSSkamania Chiropractic & Rehabilitation 45Skyline Hospital 44HIKINGMartin’s Gorge Tours 17LAUNDROMATEastwind Laundry 23LODGINGBest Western PLUS Columbia River Inn 12Bonneville Hot Springs Resort & Spa 14Columbia Gorge Riverside Lodge 13Rivermist Lodge 12Rodeway Inn 13Skamania Lodge 2The Resort at Skamania Coves 13Wind Mountain RV Park & Lodge 19MUSEUMSColumbia Gorge Interpretive Center Museum 16NORTH BONNEVILLECity of North Bonneville 21PORT OFFICEPort of Skamania County 42RESTAURANTS | COFFEE BARSAndrew's Pizza 11Backwoods Brewing Company 11Big River Grill 52Big T's Diner 11Bonneville Hot Springs Resort & Spa 14Bungalow Bar & Grill 23Charburger 10El Rio Texicantina 52Locks Waterfront Café 10Robbie's Coffee House 11Skamania Lodge 2Subway 10Vibe Café & Espresso Bar 11Whistle Stop Espresso & Deli 19Skamania County CHAMBER OF COMMERCEMember Listing 46-49SKAMANIA COUNTY GENERAL SERVICESSkamania County Parks Facilities & Recreation 7SPASBonneville Hot Springs Resort & Spa 14Skamania Lodge 2STEVENSONStevenson Business Association 2STORAGE UNITSWind River Storage 23WEBSITE DESIGN | SOCIAL MEDIA SERVICESThe Gorge Project 43WEDDING AND SPECIAL EVENT VENUESBonneville Hot Springs Resort & Spa 14Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center & Museum 16Sternwheeler Columbia Gorge 40Gorge-ous Weddings 15Liquid Sunshine 19Maple Leaf Events 15Skamania Lodge 2WHITEWATER RAFTINGRiver Drifters 29WINERIES | TOURSMartin’s Gorge Tours 17Maryhill Winery 51Thank you to the Skamania County Chamber of Commerce and all of the advertisers for their support in making this publication possible.Remember to refer to the Membership Directory on pages 46-49.50 SKAMANIA COUNTY VISITORS GUIDE 2013 \\\ www.skamania.org
