The Champion • Wednesday 17 April 2013Community servicefor teenager who soldfake concert ticketsBy Court ReporterA YOUNG man who set up fakeFacebook accounts to sellnon–existent Creamfields tickets hasbeen given community service.Dale Tully, 19, of Fern Hey, Crosbyhad previously pleaded guilty to fivecharges of fraud at Sefton Magistratesand was sentenced on April 12, whenit emerged that he’d given his ownbank details and phone number tovictims.Lynne Ingman, prosecuting told thecourt that Tully had set up Facebookaccounts in the names of KaleighRobinson and Keira Tully in thesummer of 2011 and advertisedtickets for the upcoming musicfestival. He sold a total of £740 worth oftickets to five different buyers, one ofwhom paid £230.Victims were directed to transfer themoney into Tully’s own NatWest bankaccount. When they contacted him toask where there tickets were, hewould either ignore their calls or saythat the tickets had been sent. After tracing him through his bankdetails police arrested him in January2012 on suspicion of two fraudoffences, and during an interview headmitted three others.Arguments“He said he knew it was wrong andthat he had been stupid”, she said.Pamela O’Brien said in herprobation service report that Tully, who left school at 16 and did an NVQjoinery course at Hugh Baird College,Bootle, had left home to live with hisgrandmother following argumentswith his disabled father. While thereUseful advice on howto avoid falling victimto those online scamsBy Champion ReporterDURING the court proceedingsof Crosby man, Dale Tully, prosecuted for selling fakeCreamfields tickets throughFacebook, his solicitor said hedid it because he could see itwas easy to do.According to website Get SafeOnline–ajointgovernmentand private sector–fundedresource providing practicaladvice on online security – itwould appear that it is indeedeasy to get people to part withtheir cash for that sought–aftermusic festival or concert. When tickets sell out quicklyfor that must–see gig as manyas 1 in 10 people have beencaught out in an online scam. The result is that fans eitherreceive no tickets, get differenttickets to the ones they paid for,or are turned away at the eventfor having fakes. However, as the new festivalseason approaches, musiclovers can avoid thesenightmare scenarios by takingsimple precautions. With as many as 50% of onlinefestival sites being fake, GetSafe Online recommends onlybuying tickets from “the venuebox office, promoter, officialagent or reputable ticketexchange sites.”Just because a ticket–sellingsite advertises itself and looksthe real deal it is not necessarilyauthentic, as Get Safe Onlinewarns: “ cyber criminals willoften pay for search advertising(e.g. Google ad words) so thattheir fake sites appear at the topof event search results. Theyare also known to enlistprofessional web designers sothat their sites appeargenuine.”Also beware: “One methodused by scammers is to targetmusic fan websites and forumsand other social networkingsites.“Posts will be displayed from‘fans’ claiming they havebought tickets from a certainsite, encouraging those not yetsuccessful in obtaining ticketsto visit it.“More consumers are thendriven to the fake site and moregenuine fans fall for the scam.”Other good advice is to onlyuse credit cards wheneverbuying online, as purchasesover £100 mean that the creditcard company has to acceptsome liability. And only ever enter credit carddetails on a secure website. Thewebsite address should always<strong>star</strong>t https, not http, with the sstanding for secure.EnsnaredThere should also be padlocksign in the browser windowframe – which you can click onand find out the server’ssecurity certificate. If thepadlock is on the main page it isprobably a fraudulent website,so stay away.Lastly, never transfer moneydirectly into someone else’sbank account if you do chose tobuy from an individual, such asfrom eBay. Always use a securepayment site, such as PayPal,where money is transferredbetween two electronicaccounts. It was not taking care in thislast regard that the victims ofDale Tully’s fraud becameensnared. If the seller isgenuine they will be happy toco–operate. If you have been a victim of aticket scam or any other kind ofonline fraud you can report it toAction Fraud, UK’s nationalfraud reporting centre, bytelephoning 0300 123 20 40 orby visiting the websitewww.actionfraud.police.ukChe turned to gambling and committedthe frauds to fund his habit.“He expresses remorse for hisvictims”, she said and he knows it was“a really mean thing he has done.”Defence solicitor Carole Clarke, said:“It is significant that he was 17 yearsof age. Now he is 19 and has a certaindegree of maturity.”She said he has ambitions to go toAustralia but “clearly this won’t helphis application.”Sentencing him to 200 hours ofunpaid work the magistrates saidthere was a possibility he could havebeen sent to prison, “but we havetaken into account that you wereyoung when the offence wascommitted. And also that you pleadedguilty on the first occasion.”He was ordered to pay his victimstheir money back in full.Volunteersinvited totake part intree–plantingat local parkBy Holly RummensRESIDENTS and families living in Seaforth arebeing invited to help brighten up their localpark this week by taking part in a communitytree–planting event. The neighbourhood refurbishment initiativewil take place on Saturday, April 20th between11am and 2:30pm at the Dogtrack Field just offVerdi Street and Church Road, locally knownas ‘The Doggy.’Volunteers will be part of an ongoing projectfunded by the national Big Tree Plantcampaign to ‘green–up’ the local area andworking in conjunction with The MerseyForest.Ben Greenaway, Green Streets co–ordinarorfor The Mersey Forest, said: “Last year’s eventwas a big success and it would be great to seeanother good turn–out this time.Attractive“We’re meeting on the field and helpers of allages are welcome to come along.
