The hospice provides a vital serviceand cares for children with life–limitingillnesses and <strong>the</strong>ir families. It opened in1988 after a campaign by Claire LouiseCain’s family following Claire’s death justtwo weeks after her 10th birthday after atwo–year battle with cancer.Lynn said: “Claire House has been open for15 years, but because it is located <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>Wirral many people <strong>on</strong> this side of <strong>the</strong>Mersey d<strong>on</strong>’t realise that it looks afterchildren throughout Merseyside or <strong>the</strong> greatwork it does for people in Seft<strong>on</strong>.“Not <strong>on</strong>ly does it care for children, it alsoprovides respite care for <strong>the</strong> whole family.“When a child is diagnosed with a terminalillness it can be very tough for bro<strong>the</strong>rs andsisters, so we offer siblings support too.“That is not just support throughout <strong>the</strong>illness, but also bereavement support for asl<strong>on</strong>g as it is needed.”Lynn added that Claire House wouldn’t beLynn TaylorCode NAable to do all this without <strong>the</strong> support of <strong>the</strong>public. She pointed out that it costs £6,500 aday to keep Claire House open – and itreceives just 10 weeks support a year from<strong>the</strong> Government. For <strong>the</strong> rest, Claire Housedepends <strong>on</strong> d<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>s.“Claire House really deserves support,particularly as it provides so much carethroughout <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>,” she said.To find out more go towww.claire–house.org.ukReport byDanielle Thomps<strong>on</strong>LIFE–SAVING defibrillators have been given tosports clubs in Ormskirk and Hightown after amum from Maghull fundraised for <strong>the</strong>m.Ormskirk Rugby Club and Hightown FootballClub were presented with <strong>the</strong> machines <strong>on</strong>Saturday, April 13.Sue Kirk, 40, and her husband Robert Kirk,50, cycled 120 miles around <strong>the</strong> Isle of Manover three days in July to raise £1,250 for <strong>the</strong>defibrillators after hearing about <strong>the</strong> tragicdeath of a schoolboy for an undiagnosed heartc<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>.The Oliver King Foundati<strong>on</strong> was set up in hismemory after <strong>the</strong> swimmer and sportsmandied aged 12 from sudden arrhythmic deathsyndrome caused by heart rhythmabnormalities.
