We're anticipating two of the other three will be returning."As for this year, 35 of the 38 employees who were laid off have received an offer to return to the district. The layoffs in the district were a result of state education cuts.About $400 of the base rate per pupil was shaved off the past two school years as a result of aweakened economy.Education KCK Board of Education KCK Public SchoolsCopyright © 2009 The Kansas City Kansan. Holman Academy of Excellence. However, just about $7,100 was left in the charter school balance. The charter board previously fundedcompetitions at the school itself in its two years of existence."We'd like to continue that," said Chiquita Coggs, executive director of the NEBA. "We would like to justparticipate in helping build the writing skills and any other skills we can for students."Coggs said she hopes the NEBA can continue working with the district even with the charter petitionbeing eliminated.Board members agreed and voted unanimously to support the measure."I'm glad we're still going to partner with NEBA," said George Breidenthal, member of the board."They've been doing a lot of things good for the community."The competition will be open for all fifth graders in the district. A $500 savings bond will be awarded forfirst place, $300 for second and $200 for third place."Students can show their skills in written communication and receive some financial awards," saidCynthia Lane, KCKPS assistant superintendent (and incoming superintendent).Contests will be held until all the funds have been used.Previous reporting on the charter school:• KCK board officially revokes charter petition [1]• NEBA executive director, parents voice support for charter school [2]• All other stories regarding the Maurice R. Star – May 25, 2010Thanks to college scholarships, money will be less onthese students’ mindsBy MARÁ ROSE WILLIAMSThe Kansas City StarThanks to a Gates Millennium Scholarship, Jerell Cotton will get a full ride to Washington University, where he will study biology and pre-med and minor in Spanish. He wants to be a neurologist.Jerell Cotton has his ticket for the future, the one called the “Full Ride.”The ticket was one of the 1,000 Gates Millennium Scholarships given out each year — all expenses paid toattend any college or university of his choice for as long as he stays in school. Each year millions of scholarship dollars are handed over to high school graduates, usually in increments of afew thousand. It all helps, parents agree, but some Kansas City area teenagers, such as Cotton, have won all or most of theircollege educations for free.Ever since elementary school, Cotton knew a scholarship would be his best shot to an elite private college. Theonly child of a single parent, Cotton recalled that the bills sometimes totaled more than his mother could scrapetogether. The two often relied on family for food and a place to sleep.

“We moved a lot because sometimes she couldn’t pay the rent and we had to,” Cotton said. But it was never long before Renee Cotton would find a new place and get her son back into a routine and ontrack at school. No one else in Cotton’s family has attended a four-year university, but he’s been working toward college hiswhole life.“My mother always expected good grades from me,” he said. “She would always tell me, ‘Make sure you dowell.’”Renee Cotton’s struggles to keep a roof over their heads, food on the table and clothing on her son’s back weremotivating.“I didn’t want her to struggle so hard and then me not make anything of myself,” Jerell Cotton said.It paid off, because as a full baccalaureate scholar at Sumner Academy in Kansas City, Kan., he graduated thisspring with a 4.2 grade-point average. In the fall, he heads to Washington University in St. Louis to study biology and pre-med with a minor inSpanish.“I want to be a neurologist, and then I’ll take care of her,” Cotton said of his mother.•••Kristina Sevy is getting in shape to be a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy.Kristina Sevy’s biggest challenge may yet be in front of her as she spends the summer getting in shape to tacklean appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

A military education was something that Sevy, the oldest of three girls in her family, had always wanted. Herfather served 17 years in the Air Force, her grandfather is a retired serviceman and several uncles were militarymen, too. While the country currently fights two wars, Sevy’s idea of a military future did not wane.“Of course, nobody wants to be the one to say, ‘I’m going to war,’ but I don’t mind the idea,” said Sevy, agraduate of Blue Springs South High School. “I want to defend my country. Sure I thought about it, but itwasn’t a deterring factor.”Sevy said that the application process for an education worth $200,000 was tough and long. After writingseveral essays, she waited to learn whether she had gotten the support of U.S. Rep. Sam Graves and Sen. KitBond of Missouri and earned appointments to West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.She chose West Point because she loved the campus. And besides, water is not her thing.•••Amneet Hans, who regularly volunteers at hospitals, wants to be a doctor.

Amneet Hans is among the first generation of her Indian-American family that was born in the United States. She has lots of friends, in Olathe North High School and out, but has made a point not to surrender her Easternculture in order to better fit into the typical-American-teen mold.“With my really long hair, I look very Indian” said Hans, who is Sikh. “I used to say to my mother, ‘I want myhair cut so I can look like all the other little American girls.’ But not anymore.”Hans, who logged nearly 1,000 hours volunteering at Olathe Medical Center and Overland Park RegionalHospital, wants to be a doctor. She has been accepted into the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s six-yearmedical school program, which costs $66,000.“I didn’t want my parents to have to pay,” Hans said. So she stayed at the top of her class and tried for everyapplicable scholarship. She made her culture, and how it makes her different, the subject of her scholarshipessays. While she still is short of a free ride, Hans is halfway there, with 10 scholarships totaling more than $30,000.She checks the mailbox every day for more. The largest so far is the $10,000 Coca-Cola Scholarship, for which 80,000 students apply and 250 win.•••Dominique Williams was Westport High’s valedictorian and had a 3.89 GPA.Dominique Williams is the youngest of four sisters to attend Westport High School. She will be the second ofthem to attend college.

Even though her older sister got some financial aid for college, paying the balance “put a major burden on mymom,” Williams said. Without a scholarship, Williams was sure she would have to start at a two-year college, transfer to a four-year school and graduate in debt.Over the last decade, the price of a college education has soared faster than the costs of many other goods andservices in the U.S.The average annual cost to attend a private four-year college was $26,273 a year ago, up 4.4 percent from theprevious year. For a four-year public college, it was $7,020, up 6.5 percent from the year before. None of thosefigures includes room and board. For as long as she could remember, Williams wanted to become a doctor, but when a 16-year-old classmate wasshot to death on prom night last year, Williams was affected deeply. Her grades dropped slightly, and theKansas City teen began re-evaluating her choices.Williams said that her friend “wasn’t bad at all. She was part of the top 10 percent of the class. She wasn’thanging around the right people. I thought, ‘If that could happen to her, it could happen to anyone.’“I thought if I could have been that one person to have talked to her and stopped her from hanging with thosepeople or convinced her to go to prom, maybe this would never have happened.”Williams, who graduated with a 3.89 grade-point average, was Westport High’s valedictorian. She won the $100,000 Alice Carson Tisdale Honors scholarship to Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C. Inher essay, Williams wrote about her friend’s death and how it changed her life.Instead of medicine, Williams will study sociology and elementary education. She now sees her life’s work as“doing what ever is necessary” to stop what happened to her friend from happening to other promising urbanteens.“This school chose me,” said Williams, who has adopted Claflin’s motto: “The world needs visionaries.”•••

Family was a big part of Shelby Cruz’s success. Cruz (right) hugged her cousin Iris Serrano as they bothgraduated last week from William Chrisman High School.Shelby Cruz has been taking care of her three younger siblings and helping her mom around the house almosther entire life.“I had to grow up really fast,” she said. That did not stop the William Chrisman High School graduate from holding down a job, keeping up with violinpractice and studying to achieve her 4.1 GPA.Her story, her grades and her struggle earned the Independence native a 2010 Gates Millennium Scholarship.“I don’t know how I would ever have paid for college,” Cruz said. “Honestly, I don’t think it would have beenpossible.“I’d say we were lower middle class. I remember seeing my mom with food stamps, but we always had what weneeded, a roof over our heads and food to eat,” she said. “I never had regret. Actually, I always thought I wasliving the life.”Cruz said she believes all the years of helping out at home while her mom worked and studying in the eveningsafter work made her more focused and helped her develop a strong work ethic.

“I think if things had been different, maybe I wouldn’t be in this situation with a scholarship that will pay all ofmy college until I get a doctorate.”Cruz said she would have loved to attend the University of Hawaii, but she opted to study nursing at theUniversity of Central Missouri in Warrensburg to stay close to home and continue helping her mother. The day she learned of the scholarship started well.“I woke up feeling it would be a good day,” Cruz said. “I got in the car for school, and my favorite song wasplaying. I came home, and the package was on the table. I opened it and read the first page. I was so happy, Ijust fell to the floor and started bawling.”To reach Mará Rose Williams, call 816-234-4419 or send e-mail to mdwilliams@kcstar.com.

In order to save some budget dollars, the district is open to outsourcingjanitorial, security and cafeteria positions this year. The study is expected to last four to six months, ruling out any outsourcing for the 2010-11 school year.Salary and benefits will be studied and compared to some of KCK Public Schools' neighboring districts. At various community budget forums and some board meetings, the topic of outsourcing was a hot one.Education KCK Board of Education KCK Public Schools OutsourcingCopyright © 2009 The Kansas City Kansan. "The school is ideal for the library."Each student at the school has been encouraged to submit an idea for which books they want to see inthe library.Shelves, chair and furniture donations have been made to the new library.Students at the school had longed used the Argentine Public Library, located just feet away from theschool. However, with a donation drive ongoing to fund a new site for Argentine's library, the schoolmoved to design its own in-school library.

Construction, which will be funded from the school library technology budget and school district dollars, will begin immediately. The library should be completed by Aug. 1."It's a real exciting time for the school," Sternshein said.Emerson Elementary School KCK Board of Education KCK Public SchoolsCopyright © 2009 The Kansas City Kansan. KCTV5.comKCK Takes First Step To Address Homeless ProblemPOSTED: 6:40 am CDT May 28, 2010UPDATED: 7:52 am CDT May 28, 2010Related To StoryKANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Wyandotte County leaders got the grim statistics onthe state of homelessness in their own back yard Thursday and took the firststeps in trying to help with the problem. In a series of reports in May, the KCTV5 investigative team showed there arevirtually no emergency shelter beds in the county and the problem could betaxing Kansas City, Kan., schools. There are currently 1,200 homeless children in KCK schools right now, school officials said, and virtually no place for those children and families tostay.Video• KCK Forms Homeless Task ForceThe county said it needs lots of help, and money, to change that. The backdrop of Thursday's special session told the story. On large screensbehind county leaders were photos of actual homeless families in Wyandotte County, where the average age of a homelessperson is seven. Two women who work in the trenches of the homeless problem in Wyandotte County painted a grim picture of the state ofhomelessness in the county. While there are 1,200 homeless students in KCK, there are only 43 emergency shelter beds for homeless families in thecounty. The numbers are only getting worse, the women said.Staci Pratt is a homeless liason for KCK schools and said it is time for all hands on deck. She specifically called out thecounty's booming west side for help."What do I think we need?" Pratt said. "What we need is engagement from the business community by the banks, by thepeople in Wyandotte county who have the resources to make a difference."After hearing the report, county leaders unanimously adopted a resolution creating a task force to identify businessleaders, organizations, institutions and money to address the issue."Everybody needs to be at the table," Unified Government Mayor Joe Reardon said. "This is an issue that affects everysingle part of the community. The businesses need to be at the table. Our citizens need to be engaged. The region needsto be engaged.Reardon said the solution is more complicated than just building a shelter. He said the county needs ideas on expandingtransitional housing and services for the near-homeless, as well as creating more affordable housing for families in thedown economy. One county commissioner cited KCTV5's investigative reports on the issue several times during the meeting.
