Once a leak isdetected users are made instantlyaware via SMS, either to a PC ormobile telephone.The system is particularlyapplicable for monitoring areasknown to be susceptible to leaks orbursts, where rapid action isrequired. It could also be for theprotection of important customersfrom supply disruption or a risk offlooding.Sound data to work with!Phocus.sms incorporates anintegral accelerometer with a highsensitivity to leak noise. Socrates gains recognitionMonitoring Domestic Night Use within Welsh WaterRPS Water Services is currently undertaking a rollingprogramme of logging to determine the legitimatedomestic night use within Welsh Water.A set of control areas have been chosen which arerepresentative of the social and economic types of property withinthe region covered by Welsh Water. The Socrates logger, suppliedby <strong>Primayer</strong>, has been used to determine both leakage anddomestic night use within the areas. The ongoing programme oflogging will determine both a robust estimate of legitimatedomestic night use specific to Welsh Water, and any seasonalpatterns in domestic night use.As Gordon Hall of Welsh Water Water puts it, “WhenSocrates was launched, we waited to see how it wouldturn out. Now we are convinced that Socrates is aneffective tool of estimating legitimate night use. We arenow using it continuously on the network.”Arthur Arscott Regional Director of RPS WaterServices says “We use Socrates in parallel with othermethods to estimate legitimate night use. This isbased on thelatest Enigmatechnology,offering improvedsensitivity andinnovative leak sizingsoftware to assist operatives.Customer Services ‘Hots up’Moves have been taken toimprove support to customersand fully integrate CustomerServices with other key functionswithin <strong>Primayer</strong>.The customer services team hasexpanded to meet the needs agrowing customer basethroughout the world. Onecatalyst for the new lookteam has been therequirement identified aspart of the businessreview process arising from the recent ISO9001:2000 accreditation. In particular, twoapplication engineers are now in place toprovide reactive support, helping customersto get the very best out of the <strong>Primayer</strong>technology. Chris Moore is now joined byAndrew Mackenzie in this role.Andrew brings additionalexperience with abackground in softwareapplications, engineeringand product support.Another responsibilityfor Chris and Andrew is toprovide effectivecommunications with theproduct developmentengineers to ensure that productscontinue to meet the developing needs ofwater engineers around the world, both interms of performance and ease of use. Colinexplains how some newinitiatives and consolidation ofwell proven quality processeswill benefit customers.Colin has been a key member of the<strong>Primayer</strong> Management team from thebirth of the company 9 years ago.Formally with Biwater Spectrascan, hisrole has always been focused on theproduction processes and new productdevelopment. Today he is responsiblefor a team of over 20 specialists at theDenmead production base.The extent of the business reviewhas been far reaching covering suchareas as business strategy, financialissues, communication, meetings,documentation and market information.Overall, we are even better placed tounderstand what customers want nowand in the future, as well as being ableto match these wants with productsthat are truly ‘fit for purpose’. Existingprocesses were truly tested during2004, <strong>Primayer</strong>’s most successful yearto date. This gave us a sound platformto build from.A number of factors and newinitiatives are now fundamental tothe performance of our Productionteams. For example:■ Front line production teams will fullyembrace ‘peer inspection’ methods,and job rotation will take place insuch areas as inspection and repairs.Overall, we will ensure cover for allprocesses helping to ensuremaximum reliability, whilst beingbetter placed to meet delivery deadlines.■ The major new project to supplyEnigma throughout Thames Waterwill see a specific production lineintroduced. Existing lines will bemaintained with extra resourcesassimilated within the new QAFramework to ensure no effect toother customers.■ Clear and appropriatedocumentation is vital for allapplications within the business.ISO 9001:2000 has enabled us tofocus on establishing a betterstructure and communicationprocess between the developmentdepartment and production.
