<strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
good headway <strong>in</strong><br />
harsh conditions<br />
<strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> has always been synonymous with reliability, whatever <strong>the</strong> conditions,<br />
and <strong>the</strong>re could have been no more tell<strong>in</strong>g demonstration of our<br />
capacity to make good headway <strong>in</strong> all wea<strong>the</strong>rs than our experience this<br />
w<strong>in</strong>ter.<br />
At a time when as many as 60 ships were stuck <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baltic ice, our A1<br />
ice-class vessels cont<strong>in</strong>ued to carve out a passage, at times almost slalom<strong>in</strong>g<br />
between <strong>the</strong> ships still locked <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> frozen embrace of <strong>the</strong> ice.<br />
Our economic performance has been similarly impressive, and if anyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
under even more challeng<strong>in</strong>g conditions. When <strong>the</strong> economic crisis hit <strong>in</strong><br />
2008, <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> had problems of its own that it had to address. At <strong>the</strong> same<br />
time, this has also been a grim time for maritime trade, with <strong>the</strong> European<br />
economy still struggl<strong>in</strong>g for traction after <strong>the</strong> near-crippl<strong>in</strong>g blows of <strong>the</strong><br />
last two years.<br />
And yet as 2010 closes, I am happy to report that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se two years we<br />
have managed to turn <strong>the</strong> company round, conjur<strong>in</strong>g profit out of loss and<br />
boost<strong>in</strong>g revenues substantially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process.<br />
It has taken hard work and a bold plan of action that <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong>ternal<br />
reorganisation, a significant restructur<strong>in</strong>g process by ma<strong>in</strong>ly merg<strong>in</strong>g group<br />
companies with an aim to ga<strong>in</strong> efficiencies and a more transparent group<br />
structure, <strong>the</strong> disposal of non-core assets, an <strong>in</strong>tense focus on yield management,<br />
expansion <strong>in</strong>to new routes and bus<strong>in</strong>esses, and synergies with<br />
<strong>the</strong> far-flung network of our parent company, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Grimaldi</strong> <strong>Group</strong>.
The benefits are now evident, as you will discover <strong>in</strong> this issue<br />
of <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> News. Compar<strong>in</strong>g our revenues between 2008 and 2010<br />
with our earn<strong>in</strong>gs before tax (EBT) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same period, gives some<br />
<strong>in</strong>dication of how far we have come. Revenues last year were EUR<br />
174.6 million lower than <strong>the</strong> EUR 735.7 million generated <strong>in</strong> 2008.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> same time, EBT was up EUR 6.9 million over <strong>the</strong> same period.<br />
And compared with 2009, last year’s EBT ga<strong>in</strong> was a highly impressive<br />
EUR 55 million, illustrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> success of our relentless focus on<br />
improv<strong>in</strong>g efficiency.<br />
This bodes well for 2011, a year that I am look<strong>in</strong>g forward to as<br />
a time to consolidate our hard-won ga<strong>in</strong>s and prepare ourselves for<br />
fur<strong>the</strong>r growth. Though I have no illusions about <strong>the</strong> challenges still<br />
fac<strong>in</strong>g us, I believe we are all <strong>the</strong> more capable of overcom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m<br />
for <strong>the</strong> extensive fitness programme we have gone through <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />
last two years and still have to cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next years to come on<br />
various fields that are not provid<strong>in</strong>g contributions as of yet.<br />
We are now leaner, more efficient, and more transparent. We have<br />
also opened up new routes to profitability that we believe will contribute<br />
significantly to our bottom l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> years ahead.<br />
They <strong>in</strong>clude a dense network of services <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> fast-grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Russia market that, by l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> worldwide presence of<br />
<strong>Grimaldi</strong>, will help open up Russia to <strong>the</strong> world. They also <strong>in</strong>clude our<br />
services to passengers, untended for years and now grow<strong>in</strong>g fast on<br />
<strong>the</strong> back of targeted <strong>in</strong>vestment, upgraded service levels, and dedicated<br />
market<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
I am look<strong>in</strong>g forward to more novelty this year as we look to improve<br />
service and raise our profile. In March, I will travel to Ch<strong>in</strong>a for<br />
<strong>the</strong> christen<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> first two of six new vessels to be delivered over<br />
<strong>the</strong> next two years. These giant vessels are state-of-<strong>the</strong> art, not just<br />
<strong>in</strong> terms of <strong>the</strong>ir operat<strong>in</strong>g capability but because, as you will discover<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pages that follow,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are environmentally<br />
friendly vessels,<br />
<strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g elements<br />
designed expressly to<br />
reduce our carbon footpr<strong>in</strong>t.<br />
<strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> will always<br />
be reliable <strong>in</strong> this<br />
area too, whatever <strong>the</strong><br />

back <strong>in</strong> 2010<br />
FINNLINES ENGINEERED A MAjOR TURNAROUND IN ITS RESULTS LAST yEAR AS A SWEEPING INTERNAL<br />
REORGANISATION, THE LAUNCH OF NEW ROUTES AND ExPANDED SERvICES, AND IMPROvED MARkETS<br />
FOLLOWING THE REAL DIFFICULTIES OF 2009, FED THROUGH TO REvENUES AND EARNINGS.<br />
Thus, earn<strong>in</strong>gs before taxes came <strong>in</strong> at EUR<br />
3.7 million for 2010, compared with a loss of<br />
EUR 51.4 million <strong>the</strong> previous year. In terms<br />
of EBITDA (earn<strong>in</strong>gs before <strong>in</strong>terest, taxes,<br />
depreciation and amortisation), <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> delivered<br />
EUR 85.9 million, more than double<br />
<strong>the</strong> EUR 37.4 million registered <strong>in</strong> 2009.<br />
On ano<strong>the</strong>r positive note, <strong>the</strong> company’s<br />
reorganisation resulted <strong>in</strong> a sharp drop <strong>in</strong><br />
expenses, with vessel lease expenses fall<strong>in</strong>g<br />
EUR 27.3 million over <strong>the</strong> period as <strong>the</strong><br />
company redelivered a str<strong>in</strong>g of high-priced<br />
chartered ships to <strong>the</strong>ir owners. O<strong>the</strong>r operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
expenses came to EUR 165.9 million <strong>in</strong><br />
2010, down from EUR 199.1 million <strong>in</strong> 2009.<br />
Good rEsults for shipp<strong>in</strong>G and sEa<br />
transport sErvicEs<br />
Revenues also got better as <strong>the</strong> company<br />
expanded its range and <strong>the</strong> economy recovered<br />
<strong>in</strong> Europe. Indeed, revenues rose 13.5<br />
per cent from EUR 494.4 million to EUR 561.1<br />
million year-on-year, with <strong>the</strong> core Shipp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and Sea Transport Services segment perform<strong>in</strong>g<br />
particularly well.<br />
The improvement was reflected <strong>in</strong> ga<strong>in</strong>s<br />
across <strong>the</strong> <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> product mix, with cargo<br />
units transported <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g from 596,000<br />
<strong>in</strong> 2009 to 629,000 last year, car volumes,<br />
exclud<strong>in</strong>g passenger cars, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g from<br />
38,000 to 56,000 and freight tonnes carried<br />
up from 2,001,000 tonnes to 2,039,000<br />
tonnes. Passenger numbers, exclud<strong>in</strong>g lorry<br />
drivers, also grew by 44 per cent year-onyear.<br />
Though maritime trade <strong>in</strong> our core Baltic<br />
markets has yet to reach <strong>the</strong> heights of 2008,<br />
<strong>the</strong> recovery cont<strong>in</strong>ues. F<strong>in</strong>nish seaborne imports<br />
carried <strong>in</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>ers, lorries and trailers<br />
last year rose 14 per cent and exports 13<br />
per cent compared with 2009, accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
<strong>the</strong> F<strong>in</strong>nish Maritime Adm<strong>in</strong>istration.<br />
O<strong>the</strong>r trades are lagg<strong>in</strong>g, however. Shippax<br />
reported that, while private and commercial<br />
passenger traffic between F<strong>in</strong>land and<br />
Germany rose 6 per cent, trailer and lorry volumes<br />
mov<strong>in</strong>g between sou<strong>the</strong>rn Sweden and<br />
Germany slipped 1 per cent last year, while<br />
private and commercial passenger traffic between<br />
F<strong>in</strong>land and Sweden decreased 2 per<br />
cent.
Long-term cooperation<br />
<strong>the</strong> key to <strong>the</strong> future<br />
THE ROLE OF THE COMMON CARRIER HAS ALWAyS BEEN HIGHLy vALUED AT FINNLINES, ENABLING<br />
THE COMPANy TO SURvIvE THROUGH ADvERSITy AND THRIvE WHEN THE MARkET IS GROWING.<br />
HOWEvER, ITS STATUS AS A COMMON CARRIER HAS NEvER PREvENTED MAjOR SHIPPERS FROM<br />
NEGOTIATING ABOUT OPENING NEW ROUTES AND DEvELOPING NEW SERvICES.<br />
The value of cooperation between <strong>the</strong> movers and <strong>the</strong> owners of<br />
cargo has never been more apparent than now, at a time when uncerta<strong>in</strong>ty<br />
over <strong>the</strong> economic and political future has highlighted <strong>the</strong> need<br />
for stability and certa<strong>in</strong>ty <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess relations.<br />
on schEdulE rEliably, safEly and Economically<br />
By <strong>the</strong> same token, <strong>the</strong> value of <strong>the</strong> long-term contract is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />
apparent. It suits giant forest-product manufacturers, for <strong>in</strong>stance,<br />
perfectly, s<strong>in</strong>ce for <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> most important aspects of logistics are<br />
that goods are moved reliably, safely, economically and on-schedule.<br />
Long-term commitments make it that much easier to develop <strong>the</strong><br />
close relationships necessary to meet those goals. They also benefit<br />
smaller shippers, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>ir high-volume brethren provide <strong>the</strong> volume<br />
of cargo that ensures frequency on a given route and facilitates longterm<br />
plann<strong>in</strong>g for all.<br />

As <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> prepares to take delivery of its first two newbuild<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
from Ch<strong>in</strong>a, such cooperation is aga<strong>in</strong> at work, with two long-term<br />
contracts already signed that provide competitive advantages as well<br />
as security for both shipper and shipp<strong>in</strong>g company.<br />
These newbuild<strong>in</strong>gs are designed to accommodate almost any k<strong>in</strong>d<br />
of dry cargo. The first ships will go <strong>in</strong>to <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong>’ North Sea services,<br />
carry<strong>in</strong>g unitised cargo and paper southbound, and mak<strong>in</strong>g it possible<br />
to carry o<strong>the</strong>r large-volume cargo, such as cars, northbound on a<br />
regular basis.<br />
Efficient, large-scale shipp<strong>in</strong>g companies such as <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> are<br />
best placed to achieve such synergies between different types of cargo,<br />
both because <strong>the</strong>y have access to substantial volumes of different<br />
goods, and because <strong>the</strong>y are prepared to back <strong>the</strong>ir commitment to<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir customers with <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> modern new tonnage.<br />

As <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> has grown <strong>in</strong>to one of Europe’s<br />
largest l<strong>in</strong>er shipp<strong>in</strong>g companies, its services<br />
and brands have had to respond ever more<br />
swiftly to <strong>the</strong> challenges of competition and<br />
<strong>the</strong> needs of <strong>the</strong> market. Now, <strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
move to serve its customers better and develop<br />

unitized cargo, Zeebrugge is also a grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
forest products port. Connections to <strong>the</strong> road<br />
network are ideal, and <strong>the</strong> port is located

right on <strong>the</strong> coast, so vessels need not navigate<br />
<strong>the</strong> estuary, mak<strong>in</strong>g transit times that<br />
much shorter.<br />
Zeebrugge is also one of <strong>the</strong> most important<br />
car-handl<strong>in</strong>g hubs on <strong>the</strong> European<br />
Cont<strong>in</strong>ent. This will give it an important advantage<br />
when <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong>’ upcom<strong>in</strong>g newbuild-<br />
<strong>in</strong>gs are put <strong>in</strong>to service, with <strong>the</strong>ir hoistable<br />
car decks for 900 cars and capacity for 3,245<br />
lane metres of roll<strong>in</strong>g cargo.<br />
By comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> various l<strong>in</strong>es to which<br />
it has access, <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> can offer not just a<br />
rich and versatile service mix <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> North<br />
Sea and <strong>the</strong> Baltic Sea, but connections to<br />
<strong>the</strong> worldwide <strong>Grimaldi</strong> Network. The new<br />
Zeebrugge service will be launched <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
end of March.<br />

ahead after strong 2010<br />
AMONG FINNLINES’ GREAT SUCCESSES IN 2010 WAS THE DRAMATIC DEvELOPMENT OF ITS PASSENGER<br />
BUSINESS. A COMBINATION OF HARD WORk, ENHANCED ORGANISATION, IMPROvED qUALITy,<br />
AND INNOvATIvE SALES AND MARkETING INITIATIvES, LED TO SIGNIFICANT GROWTH.<br />
The growth was particularly significant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
F<strong>in</strong>land<strong>–</strong>Poland and F<strong>in</strong>land<strong>–</strong>Germany operations,<br />
as well as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> traffic between Germany<br />
and Sweden. While <strong>the</strong> German market<br />
showed <strong>the</strong> strongest growth, volumes<br />
across <strong>the</strong> passenger operation leaped by as<br />
much as 50 per cent on <strong>the</strong> previous year.<br />
morE Emphasis on customEr satisfaction<br />
These ga<strong>in</strong>s were <strong>the</strong> product of almost revolutionary<br />
change across <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess. The<br />
<strong>in</strong>troduction of a multi-functional passenger<br />
service unit, <strong>in</strong> which personnel performed a<br />
number of different tasks along <strong>the</strong> service<br />
cha<strong>in</strong>, worked well <strong>in</strong> practice. As <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong><br />
well tra<strong>in</strong>ed passenger staff took more extensive<br />
responsibility, <strong>the</strong>y became more<br />
sensitive to <strong>the</strong> needs of our customers and<br />
got <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g satisfaction from <strong>the</strong>ir work.<br />
Indeed, <strong>the</strong>re were often “happy reunions”
when customers at check-<strong>in</strong> realised <strong>the</strong>y were deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong><br />
same person who had made <strong>the</strong>ir orig<strong>in</strong>al reservation.<br />
The reorganised passenger bus<strong>in</strong>ess model worked well from <strong>the</strong><br />
beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g, exceed<strong>in</strong>g 2009 volumes even <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> harsh w<strong>in</strong>ter months.<br />
And when a volcano erupted <strong>in</strong> Iceland, ground<strong>in</strong>g aircrafts across<br />
<strong>the</strong> Baltic region, <strong>the</strong> company was able to respond to <strong>the</strong> surge <strong>in</strong><br />
demand <strong>–</strong> and <strong>in</strong> one week alone <strong>the</strong> F<strong>in</strong>nish call centre was flooded<br />
with almost 10,000 calls <strong>–</strong> to help thousands of customers reach<br />
home safely.<br />
nEw campaiGn approachEs<br />
The follow<strong>in</strong>g months also went well, with passenger volumes<br />
boosted by <strong>in</strong>tensified cooperation with major German travel agencies,<br />
and a surge of group book<strong>in</strong>gs keep<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess tick<strong>in</strong>g along<br />
through <strong>the</strong> summer. <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> began market<strong>in</strong>g its summer season<br />
early: <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>land, <strong>the</strong> company launched a promotion with volkswagen<br />
offer<strong>in</strong>g a free trip and rental car; <strong>in</strong> Germany, <strong>the</strong> “W<strong>in</strong> your<br />
own Island” promotion tempted customers with a stay <strong>in</strong> a summer<br />
cottage on a F<strong>in</strong>nish island.<br />
Advertised onl<strong>in</strong>e and through radio, <strong>the</strong>se campaigns contributed<br />
to high summer sales, just as a number of <strong>the</strong>med products gave an<br />
added spur to year-end book<strong>in</strong>gs. The New year’s cruise from Ger-<br />

Separately, <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> also ran a cross-market photo competition,<br />
hosted on a multil<strong>in</strong>gual micro site where images could be uploaded<br />
directly. Some 432 photos were sent <strong>in</strong>, many of which figure <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
company’s 2011 passenger brochure, and a re-run of <strong>the</strong> competition<br />
is expected this year as an important way for <strong>the</strong> company to build a<br />
relationship with its customers.<br />
That connection already appears to gett<strong>in</strong>g warmer. Last autumn,<br />
<strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> sent a customer satisfaction survey to 10,000 passengers.<br />
Some 3,000 replied, with 97 per cent say<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y would sail with<br />
<strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>, and 94 per cent declar<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>y would happily<br />
recommend it to <strong>the</strong>ir friends. In particular, <strong>the</strong>y liked <strong>the</strong> cosy<br />
voyage, <strong>the</strong> friendl<strong>in</strong>ess of <strong>the</strong> staff, <strong>the</strong> good food and <strong>the</strong> chance<br />
to recharge <strong>the</strong>ir batteries at ei<strong>the</strong>r beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g or end of <strong>the</strong>ir trip.<br />
<strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong>’ new slogan, “your vacation starts at <strong>the</strong> Ship”, was also a<br />
hit with customers. The company expects to see many more of <strong>the</strong>m<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> year ahead.<br />

cargo unit or tonne. Initiatives cover<strong>in</strong>g hull- and propeller-polish<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
waste-heat recovery, shaft generators, and<br />
electronic eng<strong>in</strong>e controls are also <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> our CO 2 reduction<br />

F<strong>in</strong>nbreeze and F<strong>in</strong>nsea will slot perfectly <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> company’s<br />
environmental programme. Upgraded “repeats” of F<strong>in</strong>nmill and<br />
F<strong>in</strong>npulp, ro-ros built <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same Ch<strong>in</strong>ese shipyard that have<br />
flown <strong>the</strong> <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> flag for a decade, <strong>the</strong>ir fuel consumption<br />
compares well with ships of similar size.<br />
The vessels come with rudder/propeller comb<strong>in</strong>ation technology<br />
designed to achieve significant improvements <strong>in</strong> fuel<br />
effectiv<strong>in</strong>ess, while <strong>the</strong> bulbous bow has been modified for<br />
better fuel economy. Flexible load<strong>in</strong>g arrangements will also<br />
make <strong>the</strong>m more efficient.<br />
Cargo is carried on four decks, with three <strong>in</strong>ternal ramps to<br />
speed up load<strong>in</strong>g. The car decks, two of which are hoistable,<br />
have room for 900 cars, and <strong>the</strong>re is also room for more than<br />
200 trailers and 428 TEU.<br />

Safety is also part of environmental responsibility, and <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong><br />
always does extensive tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of new crew members before<br />
<strong>the</strong>y take over. There is generally an overlap period <strong>in</strong> which<br />
crew members with experience of <strong>the</strong> ship <strong>in</strong>troduce new arrivals<br />
to <strong>the</strong> vessel and its equipment. On newbuild<strong>in</strong>gs, some key<br />
personnel attend sea trials, while <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> crew arrives<br />

The F<strong>in</strong>nbreeze crew, for <strong>in</strong>stance, attended an extensive<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programme provided by <strong>the</strong> shipyard. In-house tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
was also arranged to <strong>in</strong>troduce those who have not sailed<br />
with <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> before to <strong>the</strong> company’s safety, security and<br />
environmental procedures. At <strong>the</strong> same time, <strong>the</strong> F<strong>in</strong>nish flagstate<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce 2010, <strong>the</strong> ships have been runn<strong>in</strong>g 100<br />

customers. It has also been rewarded<br />

volumes, shipp<strong>in</strong>g as many as 200 mafis per<br />
week to its Russian customers.<br />

succEss factor<br />
Low westbound volumes have long been a<br />
problem <strong>in</strong> this trade, though TRE has worked<br />
hard to right <strong>the</strong> imbalance. Add<strong>in</strong>g ventspils<br />
to <strong>the</strong> schedule <strong>in</strong> july of last year has certa<strong>in</strong>ly<br />
helped, add<strong>in</strong>g 80 to 100 lorries per<br />
call <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> direction of Lübeck. In addition,<br />
TRE has also managed to attract more mafi<br />
timber shipments out of Russia. And l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
one Hansa-Class vessel to kotka, where it<br />
loads paper, has also significantly improved<br />
<strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e’s economic performance.<br />
TRE’s success depends <strong>in</strong> good part on<br />
access to a productive term<strong>in</strong>al and <strong>the</strong> privately<br />
owned Lehmann Term<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong> Lübeck<br />
supplies <strong>the</strong> space, storage and professional

service TRE requires to keep customer<br />
satisfaction high. The same<br />
goes for St. Petersburg, where <strong>the</strong><br />

Europal<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong> first ship to discharge at improved Gdynia port<br />
New double ro-ro ramp to<br />
speed services at Gdynia<br />
Two years ago, <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> launched a brace of new Motorways<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Sea centred on <strong>the</strong> port of Gdynia that opened<br />
up new freight and passenger opportunities between F<strong>in</strong>land,<br />
Poland and Germany.<br />
Last December, on a cold day <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Polish port, we had<br />
a heart-warm<strong>in</strong>g confirmation of <strong>the</strong> success of <strong>the</strong>se new<br />
routes with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>auguration of a new double ro-ro ramp at<br />
<strong>the</strong> port.<br />
<strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong>’ chief executive Uwe Bakosch and janusz<br />
jaros<strong>in</strong>ski, president of <strong>the</strong> Port of Gdynia Authority, were<br />
<strong>in</strong> attendance for <strong>the</strong> traditional ribbon-cutt<strong>in</strong>g ceremony,<br />
which also saw our Star-class vessel Europal<strong>in</strong>k become<br />
<strong>the</strong> first ship to discharge at <strong>the</strong> newly improved facility.<br />
Mr jaros<strong>in</strong>ski noted that <strong>the</strong> berth is part of a significant<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> ro-ro <strong>in</strong>frastructure by <strong>the</strong> Port of Gdynia<br />
Authority under a programme that will also enhance<br />
road and rail access to <strong>the</strong> port. “Despite <strong>the</strong> exceptionally<br />
long w<strong>in</strong>ter and o<strong>the</strong>r obstacles, we have<br />
managed to fulfil our commitment to <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong>,” he<br />
said.<br />
Mr Bakosch congratulated <strong>the</strong> port on a job well<br />
done, remark<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> bright new ramp should<br />
serve <strong>the</strong> company’s needs for years to come.<br />
He added that <strong>the</strong> success of <strong>F<strong>in</strong>nl<strong>in</strong>es</strong>’ partnership<br />
with Gdynia bodes well for <strong>the</strong> future. “Our ropax<br />
services between F<strong>in</strong>land, Poland and Germany<br />
represent a major advance for <strong>the</strong> concept of Motorways<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Sea, both <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baltic Sea and <strong>in</strong> a wider<br />
European context. Gdynia has an important role to play <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g development of this network.”<br />
As he also remarked: “Through synergies with <strong>the</strong> farflung<br />
