Connecting Fi
to the world
IT is fair to say that the history of Finland is also a history of the sea. It could
hardly be otherwise given Finland’s geography: its coastal position at the
far North of the European continent, and its distance from the great markets
to the south. Once the economy began to modernise, and industrialise, on
a significant scale in the middle of the 18th century, the die was cast and
shipping was called upon to respond.
And respond it did. Once a bottleneck for a vibrant Finnish economy, the
shipping sector, with Finnlines in the vanguard, now provides that vital connection
between Finland and the rest of the world that supplies the country’s
life-blood: trade. What is more, it does so with exactly the combination
of regularity, reliability and frequency that is demanded of it by the trading
community and wider society.
Finnlines continues to invest in those vital connections. Four of the six
vessels ordered from Chinese yard Jinling have now been delivered and deployed.
They are busy carrying forest products, that mainstay of the Finnish
export economy, to southern markets and returning home with all manner of
goods for Finnish manufacturers and consumers, perhaps most prominently
finished cars. Our ability to access the far-flung network of our parent company,
the Grimaldi Group, has also allowed us to throw Finland’s net into
ever-more-distant waters.
nland
These ships are made for the new world
opening up before us. They combine size
with flexibility, with capacity for 3,320 lm of
rolling cargo, providing space for more than
200 trailers. Built to ice-class 1A, they also
have hoistable car decks capable of holding
around 900 cars and Lo-Lo capacity for 400
TEU. Not only that, they are built to demanding
standards of efficiency and environmental
sustainability.
But the new Finnlines is not only about
trade. Over the last three years, we have
been working to transform the company,
making it leaner and more efficient while
simultaneously enhancing the quality and
breadth of our service. One area of particular
focus is our passenger business, which had
been sadly neglected for a number of years.
It is neglected no more.
As you will read in this issue of Finnlines
News, we have made a significant effort to
upgrade and expand our passenger services,
investing to modernise cabins and expand
and upgrade the public areas, adding new
facilities such as gyms and children’s play
areas, and adding new calls that we believe
will capture the public’s imagination.
At a time when air travel is becoming
increasingly cumbersome, time-consuming
and high-stress, customer surveys suggest
that we are already beginning to convince
tourists and other travellers that the sea option
provides a more than viable alternative:
a relaxing beginning and end to an exciting
holiday combined with competitive pricing,
the flexibility that comes with taking your
own vehicle, and the freedom to design your
own trip from a wide variety of alternatives.
We believe strongly in the future of our passenger
business and the numbers are beginning
to bear us out, with private passenger
volumes volumes more than doubling in the
last five years.
In the final analysis, of course, our approach
to both the cargo business and the
passenger operation rests on the same fundamentals:
a commitment to levels of quality,
efficiency and service that meet, or even
exceed, our customers’ expectations. Behind
that commitment lies a more fundamental
desire: to help connect Finland to the world.
FOR MASTERS OF THEIR OWN DESTINIES
Stressless travelling on
well-fitted vessels
ONE OF THE GREAT SUCCESS STORIES AT FINNLINES OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS HAS BEEN
THE RISE AND RISE OF OUR PASSENGER BUSINESS. INDEED, ANNUAL PRIVATE PASSENGER
VOLUMES HAVE MORE THAN DOUBLED OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS TO AROUND 300,000.
In part, the steady increase in the number of
private passengers taking to the sea in our
ships is the result of determined efforts by
the company to improve the passenger experience.
This was long overdue. Finnlines has
an illustrious history of passenger service,
after all, and looking back over the last 50
years, to 1962 when it all began, a number
of iconic vessels stand out from the crowd:
Finnjet, for instance, which was among the
fastest and best-appointed ferries of its day;
and Finnstar, a genuine cruise ship. Unfortunately,
we somehow lost sight of this branch
of the business along the way as we focused
on expanding our cargo networks.
Facilities, services and route networks
under scrutiny
As we looked to reorganise and re-energise
the company’s overall business three years
ago, however, it quickly became obvious that
by ignoring the passenger business, we were
missing out on a valuable revenue stream
and a valuable enhancer of the Finnlines
brand. Here was a promising opportunity that
we must seize for a second time.
Since then, we have invested heavily in
improving the passenger facilities on board
our ships. We have remodelled cabins while
upgrading and expanding bars, restaurants
and shopping areas, and added saunas and
gyms as well as play areas for the kids, on
eight of our 15 ro-pax ships. At the same
time, we have expanded our route network
to offer an array of attractive destinations
around the Baltic.
Our customers have responded enthusiastically
to these improvements, and we are
scoring highly on surveys of passenger satisfaction.
But it would be a little disingenuous
to suggest that this success is all our own
doing. We have also been lucky enough to
get our timing just right, with the renaissance
of our passenger business coinciding
with a new interest in seaborne travel among
European tourists and travellers.
stress-Free travelling
Flying these days is more an ordeal than
the exciting, even glamorous, experience it
once was. In a difficult period when we prize
our free time more than ever, overcrowded
airports located far from major cities, sometimes
requiring an additional flight and a
time-consuming connection to complete a
journey, hardly make for a relaxing beginning
or end to a much-needed break. The same
could be said for the cumbersome security
precautions at Europe’s airports, while evertighter
baggage restrictions add to the cost
of flying and the aggravation.
By contrast, ferry travel is inherently more
relaxing. It also chimes with the trend to-
wards self-created holidays, with tourists
planning and booking their great adventure
online and exploiting the range and diversity
of shipping networks to craft exciting itineraries
featuring great cities interspersed
with relaxing periods on-board. With a car
on board too, the modern traveller really is
the master of his or her own destiny, able to
strike out into the unknown or access a prebooked
holiday home – a Finnish lakeside
cabin, say, or an Italian hilltop villa - before
taking ship again for home.
small village type vessels with warm
atmosphere
The costs are more manageable too – after
all, driving your own car means there is no
need to rent one – while our ferries are versatile
enough to accommodate just about
every need. Finnlines’ ships are perfectly
suited to caravans and mobile homes, for instance:
indeed, these intrepid travellers are
perhaps our most loyal and frequent clients.
Motor bikers, too, find our ferries to be the
perfect link between their northern home and
the great roads of Europe: at the first sign of
spring, you will find them roaring down to-
annual migration towards the sun.
The atmosphere on board our ro-pax ships
only enhances the holiday atmosphere. Our
vessels, which have capacity for anything
from 120 to 550 passengers, are more small
village than big city, and the services is correspondingly
warm and personal. Add to this
a range of destinations that open up exciting
itineraries – from Germany and Poland to
Sweden and Russia, not to mention Finland,
of course – and all the ingredients are there
for Finnlines’ passenger business to continue
growing far into the future.

Finland’s lifeline
THE SEA HAS ALWAYS BEEN FINLAND’S LIFELINE, THE COUNTRY’S GEO-
GRAPHICAL POSITION FAR FROM EUROPE’S MAJOR PRODUCING AND CON-
SUMING MARKETS MEANING THAT EFFICIENT SEA TRANSPORT WAS A
PRE-REQUISITE NOT JUST FOR ECONOMIC PROSPERITY BUT FOR FINLAND’S
STRONG MARKET POSITION IN THE WORLD.
Establishing those maritime connections did
not come easily. In the 1870s, after two decades
of relentless growth that had left Finland
with a dynamic commercial and industrial
base, a thriving private banking sector,
and a forest products industry ready to take
on the world, an under-developed maritime
transport sector was a major brake on the
country’s trading ambitions.
It was a weakness that was widely acknowledged
– “The Finnish forest products
industry needs regular, reliable, high-frequency
sea transportation,” said one observer
at the time – and one that thankfully has
MS Finnbreeze discharging cars in the port of Ust-Luga after its arrival from
Wallhamn
since been remedied. Necessity and
opportunity spurred investment, and
soon Finnish products were moving
southwards on Finnish ships, which
returned with the consumer goods and
food supplies required by the Finnish
market.
a mainstay For Finnish economy
Today, that essential national lifeline
is serviced with regularity, reliabiity
and frequency by the sparkling new
vessels of Finnlines. Forest products
are still a mainstay of the Finnish
economy, and Finnlines is a major
shipper of such goods to such hungry
hungry markets as Germany, BeNeLux,
England and Spain. When our ships return,
they come bearing gifts, often in the shape
of finished vehicles for the Finnish and Russian
markets.
And make no mistake, these ships are
state-of-the-art; multi-purpose vessels capable
of carrying everything from lorries and
trailers to containers to breakbulk cargo, and
with the capacity and flexibility required in
today’s fast-moving market. This new generation
of ships, built in China to demanding
standards in terms of economic efficiency
and environmental sustainability, are now
coming into service. Four have been delivered,
with two more to come.
Among the ships already hard at work is
MS Finnbreeze, shown here (photo above)
discharging cars in the port of Ust-Luga after
its arrival from Wallhamn. The newly delivered
cars will then be prepared for inland
transportation to their final destination in
Russia, while Finnbreeze will set sail for Kotka,
where a cargo of forest products awaits
it bound for Zeebrugge and Bilbao. Maritime
transport is still Finland’s lifeline, just as
Finnlines remains committed to connecting
its homeland with the world.
