The fast way
home!
On the weekend after Iceland’s volcanic
eruption prompted flight bans across
Europe, the customer services team at
Finnlines’ passenger terminal at vuosaari
was working under tremendous pressure
to help stranded flyers struggling to return
home by land, and sea.
That Sunday, Head of Passenger Services
kaj Takolander decided to help out at
the Hansaterminal, and boost morale in the
process. With 250 foot passengers eagerly
waiting to embark, and just a few crew
members to handle them, he soon found
himself behind the wheel of a minibus shuttling
passengers to the ship.
Sunday’s departure is nicknamed “The
Tractor Sailing”, due to the large number
of valtra valmet tractors we always carry
on that day, and sure enough hundreds of
brand new tractors were lined up in neat
rows on deck 5 as the passengers made
their way on board.
One group of French passengers was
particularly impressed. As they filed past
the tractors Mr Takolander, who is known
in the company for his quick wit, remarked
that “we have to make sure you get home
safely after you arrive in Travemunde.” It is
not clear how many of those French passengers
returned to deck 5 upon their arrival
to pick up their tractor-ride to France!

Flying Finnlines

from Aarhus to Helsinki, we suggested that the
pilot land it directly on a mafi at the terminal to
save time and expense.
A surprised port authority needed a little convincing,
but eventually we got the go-ahead and
the pilot made a very professional landing. lashed
and loaded, the helicopter sailed safely away to
the terminal at vuosaari. There, unloaded and unlashed,
it flew straight from the mafi to its final
destination. Now that is what we’d call intermodal
efficiency.
