show results for Finn
It losses of Euro 21.0 million for the first quarter on revenues of Euro 117
is difficult to underestimate just how much progress we have made
at Finnlines over the last year. Twelve months ago, we reported heavy
million. Behind those grim results was a company substantially unprepared
for the crisis, its prospects dimmed by inefficiencies and high costs across
the business.
Twelve months on, Finnlines is an altogether different proposition. Over
this brief period, we have dramatically overhauled the company, eliminating
waste, selling off non-core assets; reorganising both our internal organisation
and our network of services to the public and, most daringly of all, investing
in the teeth of the downturn in everything from new vessels to new routes.
From Encouraging prEdictions to Encouraging rEsults
As you will discover in more detail in this issue of Finnlines News, our financial
results are now beginning to reflect the benefits of this transformation.
In the first quarter of this year, we edged close to break-even, posting losses
of just Euro 3.3 million on revenues that, at Euro 121.5 million, were little
ng
egins to
lines
changed from a year ago. What is more, we achieved that improvement
in a quarter hard hit by vicious winter conditions and damaging
strikes in Finland.
We have no illusions about the difficulties that face us and the
continuing threat posed by economic crisis in this region and beyond.
But we also see reasons to be cheerful, from encouraging predictions
of a solid increase in Finnish trade volumes in the year ahead to our
encouraging results in March. We are confident in returning to profit
in 2010.
Quality opErations in good shapE
Our confidence in the future is based on four key points. First, we
believe that after the exertions of the last year, Finnlines has licked
itself into good shape again. More remains to be done, but we expect
to emerge from the crisis fitter and stronger than before, and ready to
take off as the recovery takes hold.
Second, we are investing in quality, whether in the shape of sparkling
new ships matched perfectly to the routes they serve, or new
services that open up new markets for our customers, or the enhanced
facilities that are already transforming our passenger business into a
genuine profit centre.
Thirdly, we are leveraging the power of our parent, the Grimaldi
Group, creating network synergies that link Finnlines more closely to
the world beyond the Baltic – to the US, for instance, or southern
Europe – and that create new opportunities for our customers.
And last, but certainly not least, we are reaffirming our commitment
to our Finnish home, which remains our core market. Over the
last year, we have significantly enhanced our Finnish operations, both
in terms of new services and by deploying our flagship Star-class vessels
on more routes through Helsinki.
It has been a struggle and it is not over yet but, as our latest results
demonstrate, Finnlines is on the way back.
Fleet Fitness
Finnlines successfully reschedules
Finnlines has scored a major coup with the renegotiation of the delivery dates on
the six ro-ro newbuildings it currently has on order at China’s Jinling yard.
The move will allow for a near-perfect synchronisation of its fleet reorganisation
plans, with new owned ships arriving to replace more expensive chartered
tonnage leaving the fleet.
When the order was placed in late 2007, at a cost of more than Euro 240 million,
it was intended that the first two vessels would join the fleet at the end of
this year, with the remainder arriving over the course of 2011.
The new schedule will push those deliveries back significantly. Now, the first
two ships will arrive at the end of first-quarter 2011 and the next two in the
fourth quarter. The final pair will not be delivered until fourth-quarter 2012. As
they set sail under Finnlines’ colours, a total of seven chartered vessels will leave
the fleet.
Once the final ship is delivered, Finnlines’ fleet will total 25 owned ships,
including ten ro-ros, a far cry from a year ago, when expensive chartered vessels
added substantially to the company’s cost base as demand plunged with the
crisis.
Finnlines has high hopes for these state-of-the-art new ships, which are being
built to ice-class 1A, are capable of 20 knots, and have capacity for 3,245 lane
metres of rolling cargo. Among the other key features are hoistable car decks
that take clearances on the main deck to as high as 7m.
The first two ships are now taking shape at Jinling under the supervision of
an experienced team. The first is due to be launched at the end of May, and as
of April the hull was completed and the main equipment installed, while the
superstructure and funnel were ready to be lifted on board. The second vessel is
scheduled for launch in early June.

The ships in question are Finnlines’ five
Star-class Ro-Pax ferries, glossy young
thoroughbreds with capacity for 4,200
lane metres of rolling cargo and 500 passengers.
Capable of 25 knots, they also have
speed to burn.
As Finnlines’ chief executive explains,
however, their fate over this last year also
makes them a useful metaphor for the changes
that have taken place at the company over
that period.
From sorry victim to Exploiting thE
rEcovEry
A year ago, two of the five were operating
between Malmo and Travemunde, “a trade
where in places you can only go at five or six
knots because of the wind farms along the
route.” They were, in effect, hobbled. Now
they have been given their head.
All five ships, which he calls “among the
most modern and efficient in the world,” are
now operating on routes through Helsinki
that demand exactly their kind of speed and
size. It was a question, Mr Bakosch says, “of
using our best ships to support the Finnish
economy to the maximum.”
But it was considerably more than that.
Matching the right ships to the right routes
for maximum efficiency was one element in
a sweeping overhaul of Finnlines designed to
transform it from a sorry victim of the financial
downturn into a company poised to exploit
the recovery. The vessels, he says, are
fun to watch becoming productive.
and Quickly!
The story of the Star-class ferries, however,
is symptomatic of the problems afflicting
Finnlines before Mr Bakosch’s arrival last
year. A year ago, it was disorganised enough
not just that the wrong ships were running
on the wrong routes, but that individual ships
were handling their own procurement, a very
costly way of doing things.
It was also weighed down with assets and
companies – 49 separate companies, for instance,
compared with 27 now – that often
bore little relation to its core business and
delivered less still to the bottom line. And
it was detached enough from the wealthgenerating
possibilities of its own operations
that major potential profit centres, such as
the passenger business, were all but ignored.
As Mr Bakosch puts it, the last year has
been about putting as much right as possible.
He says “we had to go down to the 17th
level of the mine to really understand the
company, and we had to do it quickly.” They
went to work. Cost reduction was immediately
high on the agenda, and the company
made significant gains both in cutting back
port expenses and bunker costs.
Focus on FlEEt and routE optimisation
Optimising the assets was also a critical part
of the campaign to get the company fit again.
Finnlines reallocated ships where they were
most suited, including new routes to Poland
and Germany. But it also began a major effort
its fleet, which had become ruinously expensive
as demand plunged with the financial
crisis.
Over the course of the year, Finnlines
redelivered nine chartered vessels to their
owners and four more will follow this year,
substantially reducing the average age of the
fleet as well as the company’s costs.
Finnlines also moved to sell off non-core
assets, from flats, warehouses and car parks
to container port operations and a cement
port business, that were in many cases both
a distraction and a cost. And it focused hard
on yield management, adjusting prices meticulously
to lure in new traffic, filling its
ships to the gunwales where in the past such
efforts were lackadaisical at best.
BEnEFits From closEr knit grimaldi
opErations
In circumstances such as this, the benefits of
being part of a larger group come very quickly
into focus. Mr Bakosch says synergies
with its parent company, the Naples-based
Grimaldi Group, have been a critical element
behind Finnlines’ turnaround thus far, and are
likely to prove highly beneficial as the recovery
gets underway in earnest. Centralising
procurement in Finnlines and other costs had
an immediate impact because of the economies
of scale it made possible, but there was
more to it than that.
While Finnlines expanded its network
around the Baltic, it also began to knit itself
7
8
into the wider Grimaldi operation, connecting
with ACl in Gothenburg, for instance, and so
to the United States, or adding Gothenburg
to the service between Helsinki and Bilbao in
northern Spain.
Finnlines also benefited last year as
Grimaldi took surplus vessels off its hands
for operation in the Mediterranean, providing
what Mr Bakosch terms “a useful safety
valve” for the Finnish company at a time
when it was under financial pressure. On the
passenger side, meanwhile, a new groupwide
computerised booking system, due to
be rolled out next year, will only improve
efficiency and awareness of the company’s
services.
morE Emphasis on passEngEr sErvicEs
Passenger services has long been the invisible
man of the Finnlines operation. As Mr Bakosch
says: “Historically, you think of Finnjet
and the image is of a high-quality passenger
service across the Baltic. We had 14 Ro-Pax
ships, but the passengers were almost forgotten.”
Non-commercial passenger numbers have
soared aboard Finnlines’ vessels as the company
has worked to improve its facilities and
on-board service. Indeed, in the first quarter,
Finnlines carried 59% more private passengers
than in the same period last year, helping
boost total passenger numbers to 121,000
from 102,000. Come the summer, the company
expects big things of its passenger business.
The same might be said of the company’s
operations as a whole, after a highly encouraging
first quarter. Mr Bakosch has no desire
to minimise the challenges still facing the
company at a time when the market, and the
regional economy, remains under pressure.
At the same time, he notes that Finnlines
lost just Euro 3.3 million in these first three
months, compared with Euro 21 million in the
same period last year, and this despite only
a small increase in revenues over the period,
from Euro 117 million to Euro 121.5 million.
He adds that “not only is the first quarter
usually very weak, but we had the additional
Helsinki
St. Petersburg
disruptions this year of a very harsh winter
and a long stevedores’ strike in Finland.”
The result was a drop in volumes from
155,000 units in last year’s first quarter to
148,000 this time, while the number of cars
handled fell from 11,000 to 9,000 and additional
tonnage slipped from 485,000 tons
to 390,000 tons. But he argues strongly that
these numbers are deceptive, and that once
conditions returned to normal, the market
bounced back.
That in itself is an achievement given how
far Finnlines has had to come over the last
year. Mr Bakosch, who confidently anticipates
returning to profit this year, says “we
have changed the production model: the
number of ships; where they run. We see
them now as factories, producing the maximum
number of units in the shortest time.”
He expects further progress up ahead. “We
are seeing the beginnings of a recovery, and
the first results of these huge initiatives we
have taken are coming in. We are on the right
track.”
On the move again:
Over the last year, and despite the impact of
the economic crisis, Finnlines has invested
in expanding its network through new calls
to Poland and Germany. Now it is taking that
commitment a step further by linking with its
parent, the Grimaldi Group, to offer a whole
new world to its customers.
For some time, Finnlines has been offering a
fortnightly service from Helsinki to Wallhamn,
where cargo can be transshipped onto Grimaldi
vessels for transport south towards the sunny
Mediterranean. Cargo also flows northbound
along the same route, from Grimaldi’s Mediterranean
ports of call to Finland and Russia.
The co-operation with the Grimaldi Group has
spread out this spring: as from 1 May, 2010
Finnlines acts as an agent also for the Grimaldi’s
South America and West Africa trades, transhipping
via Antwerp. Also cargo destined to the
Mediterranean area can be transhipped via that
route, likewise via Wallhamn.
West Africa:
Congo, d.R. Congo and Angola.
All these trades are operated with roro-vessels
which are innately suited for mobile and
project cargoes.The transhipment takes place
in Antwerp where Finnlines and Grimaldi are
calling the same terminal (AET-terminal) which
in its turn ensures easy, fast and faultless reloading
of the cargo.
Further, also cargoes destined to/from US
can be feedered through our joint network.
For Finnlines’ customers, and for the wider
The fast way
home!
On the weekend after Iceland’s volcanic
eruption prompted flight bans across
Europe, the customer services team at
Finnlines’ passenger terminal at vuosaari
was working under tremendous pressure
to help stranded flyers struggling to return
home by land, and sea.
That Sunday, Head of Passenger Services
kaj Takolander decided to help out at
the Hansaterminal, and boost morale in the
process. With 250 foot passengers eagerly
waiting to embark, and just a few crew
members to handle them, he soon found
himself behind the wheel of a minibus shuttling
passengers to the ship.
Sunday’s departure is nicknamed “The
Tractor Sailing”, due to the large number
of valtra valmet tractors we always carry
on that day, and sure enough hundreds of
brand new tractors were lined up in neat
rows on deck 5 as the passengers made
their way on board.
One group of French passengers was
particularly impressed. As they filed past
the tractors Mr Takolander, who is known
in the company for his quick wit, remarked
that “we have to make sure you get home
safely after you arrive in Travemunde.” It is
not clear how many of those French passengers
returned to deck 5 upon their arrival
to pick up their tractor-ride to France!
Flying Finnlines
Speed and efficiency are the essence of the shipping
business, but sometimes it takes a little inventiveness
to hit the target.
So when Finnlines was asked to ship a helicopter
from Aarhus to Helsinki, we suggested that the
pilot land it directly on a mafi at the terminal to
save time and expense.
A surprised port authority needed a little convincing,
but eventually we got the go-ahead and
the pilot made a very professional landing. lashed
and loaded, the helicopter sailed safely away to
the terminal at vuosaari. There, unloaded and unlashed,
it flew straight from the mafi to its final
destination. Now that is what we’d call intermodal
efficiency.
