It losses of Euro 21.0 million for the first quarter on revenues of Euro 117<br />

is difficult to underestimate just how much progress we have made<br />

at <strong>Finnlines</strong> over the last year. Twelve months ago, we reported heavy<br />

million. Behind those grim results was a company substantially unprepared<br />

for the crisis, its prospects dimmed by inefficiencies and high costs across<br />

the business.<br />

Twelve months on, <strong>Finnlines</strong> is an altogether different proposition. Over<br />

this brief period, we have dramatically overhauled the company, eliminating<br />

waste, selling off non-core assets; reorganising both our internal organisation<br />

and our network of services to the public and, most daringly of all, investing<br />

in the teeth of the downturn in everything from new vessels to new routes.<br />

From Encouraging prEdictions to Encouraging rEsults<br />

As you will discover in more detail in this issue of <strong>Finnlines</strong> News, our financial<br />

results are now beginning to reflect the benefits of this transformation.<br />

In the first quarter of this year, we edged close to break-even, posting losses<br />

of just Euro 3.3 million on revenues that, at Euro 121.5 million, were little

changed from a year ago. What is more, we achieved that improvement<br />

in a quarter hard hit by vicious winter conditions and damaging<br />

strikes in Finland.<br />

We have no illusions about the difficulties that face us and the<br />

continuing threat posed by economic crisis in this region and beyond.<br />

But we also see reasons to be cheerful, from encouraging predictions<br />

of a solid increase in Finnish trade volumes in the year ahead to our<br />

encouraging results in March. We are confident in returning to profit<br />

in 2010.<br />

Quality opErations in good shapE<br />

Our confidence in the future is based on four key points. First, we<br />

believe that after the exertions of the last year, <strong>Finnlines</strong> has licked<br />

itself into good shape again. More remains to be done, but we expect<br />

to emerge from the crisis fitter and stronger than before, and ready to<br />

take off as the recovery takes hold.<br />

Second, we are investing in quality, whether in the shape of sparkling<br />

new ships matched perfectly to the routes they serve, or new<br />

services that open up new markets for our customers, or the enhanced<br />

facilities that are already transforming our passenger business into a<br />

genuine profit centre.<br />

Thirdly, we are leveraging the power of our parent, the <strong>Grimaldi</strong><br />

<strong>Group</strong>, creating network synergies that link <strong>Finnlines</strong> more closely to<br />

the world beyond the Baltic – to the US, for instance, or southern<br />

Europe – and that create new opportunities for our customers.<br />

And last, but certainly not least, we are reaffirming our commitment<br />

to our Finnish home, which remains our core market. Over the<br />

last year, we have significantly enhanced our Finnish operations, both<br />

in terms of new services and by deploying our flagship Star-class vessels<br />

on more routes through Helsinki.<br />

It has been a struggle and it is not over yet but, as our latest results<br />

demonstrate, <strong>Finnlines</strong> is on the way back.<br />

Fleet Fitness<br />

<strong>Finnlines</strong> successfully reschedules<br />

<strong>Finnlines</strong> has scored a major coup with the renegotiation of the delivery dates on<br />

the six ro-ro newbuildings it currently has on order at China’s Jinling yard.<br />

The move will allow for a near-perfect synchronisation of its fleet reorganisation<br />

plans, with new owned ships arriving to replace more expensive chartered<br />

tonnage leaving the fleet.<br />

When the order was placed in late 2007, at a cost of more than Euro 240 million,<br />

it was intended that the first two vessels would join the fleet at the end of<br />

this year, with the remainder arriving over the course of 2011.<br />

The new schedule will push those deliveries back significantly. Now, the first<br />

two ships will arrive at the end of first-quarter 2011 and the next two in the<br />

fourth quarter. The final pair will not be delivered until fourth-quarter 2012. As<br />

they set sail under <strong>Finnlines</strong>’ colours, a total of seven chartered vessels will leave<br />

the fleet.<br />

Once the final ship is delivered, <strong>Finnlines</strong>’ fleet will total 25 owned ships,<br />

including ten ro-ros, a far cry from a year ago, when expensive chartered vessels<br />

added substantially to the company’s cost base as demand plunged with the<br />

crisis.<br />

<strong>Finnlines</strong> has high hopes for these state-of-the-art new ships, which are being<br />

built to ice-class 1A, are capable of 20 knots, and have capacity for 3,245 lane<br />

metres of rolling cargo. Among the other key features are hoistable car decks<br />

that take clearances on the main deck to as high as 7m.<br />

The first two ships are now taking shape at Jinling under the supervision of<br />

an experienced team. The first is due to be launched at the end of May, and as<br />

of April the hull was completed and the main equipment installed, while the<br />

superstructure and funnel were ready to be lifted on board. The second vessel is<br />

scheduled for launch in early June.

The ships in question are <strong>Finnlines</strong>’ five<br />

Star-class Ro-Pax ferries, glossy young<br />

thoroughbreds with capacity for 4,200<br />

lane metres of rolling cargo and 500 passengers.<br />

Capable of 25 knots, they also have<br />

speed to burn.<br />

As <strong>Finnlines</strong>’ chief executive explains,<br />

however, their fate over this last year also<br />

makes them a useful metaphor for the changes<br />

that have taken place at the company over<br />

that period.<br />

From sorry victim to Exploiting thE<br />

rEcovEry<br />

A year ago, two of the five were operating<br />

between Malmo and Travemunde, “a trade<br />

where in places you can only go at five or six<br />

knots because of the wind farms along the<br />

route.” They were, in effect, hobbled. Now<br />

they have been given their head.<br />

All five ships, which he calls “among the<br />

most modern and efficient in the world,” are<br />

now operating on routes through Helsinki<br />

that demand exactly their kind of speed and<br />

size. It was a question, Mr Bakosch says, “of<br />

using our best ships to support the Finnish<br />

economy to the maximum.”<br />

But it was considerably more than that.<br />

Matching the right ships to the right routes<br />

for maximum efficiency was one element in<br />

a sweeping overhaul of <strong>Finnlines</strong> designed to<br />

transform it from a sorry victim of the financial<br />

downturn into a company poised to exploit<br />

the recovery. The vessels, he says, are<br />

fun to watch becoming productive.<br />

The story of the Star-class ferries, however,<br />

is symptomatic of the problems afflicting<br />

<strong>Finnlines</strong> before Mr Bakosch’s arrival last<br />

year. A year ago, it was disorganised enough<br />

not just that the wrong ships were running<br />

on the wrong routes, but that individual ships<br />

were handling their own procurement, a very<br />

costly way of doing things.<br />

It was also weighed down with assets and<br />

companies – 49 separate companies, for instance,<br />

compared with 27 now – that often<br />

bore little relation to its core business and<br />

delivered less still to the bottom line. And<br />

it was detached enough from the wealthgenerating<br />

possibilities of its own operations<br />

that major potential profit centres, such as<br />

the passenger business, were all but ignored.<br />

As Mr Bakosch puts it, the last year has<br />

been about putting as much right as possible.<br />

He says “we had to go down to the 17th<br />

level of the mine to really understand the<br />

company, and we had to do it quickly.” They<br />

went to work. Cost reduction was immediately<br />

high on the agenda, and the company<br />

made significant gains both in cutting back<br />

port expenses and bunker costs.<br />

Focus on FlEEt and routE optimisation<br />

Optimising the assets was also a critical part<br />

of the campaign to get the company fit again.<br />

<strong>Finnlines</strong> reallocated ships where they were<br />

most suited, including new routes to Poland<br />

and Germany. But it also began a major effort<br />

to winnow down the chartered component of<br />

its fleet, which had become ruinously expensive<br />

as demand plunged with the financial<br />

crisis.<br />

Over the course of the year, <strong>Finnlines</strong><br />

redelivered nine chartered vessels to their<br />

owners and four more will follow this year,<br />

substantially reducing the average age of the<br />

fleet as well as the company’s costs.<br />

<strong>Finnlines</strong> also moved to sell off non-core<br />

assets, from flats, warehouses and car parks<br />

to container port operations and a cement<br />

port business, that were in many cases both<br />

a distraction and a cost. And it focused hard<br />

on yield management, adjusting prices meticulously<br />

to lure in new traffic, filling its<br />

ships to the gunwales where in the past such<br />

efforts were lackadaisical at best.<br />

BEnEFits From closEr knit grimaldi<br />

opErations<br />

In circumstances such as this, the benefits of<br />

being part of a larger group come very quickly<br />

into focus. Mr Bakosch says synergies<br />

with its parent company, the Naples-based<br />

<strong>Grimaldi</strong> <strong>Group</strong>, have been a critical element<br />

behind <strong>Finnlines</strong>’ turnaround thus far, and are<br />

likely to prove highly beneficial as the recovery<br />

gets underway in earnest. Centralising<br />

procurement in <strong>Finnlines</strong> and other costs had<br />

an immediate impact because of the economies<br />

of scale it made possible, but there was<br />

more to it than that.<br />

While <strong>Finnlines</strong> expanded its network<br />

around the Baltic, it also began to knit itself<br />

into the wider <strong>Grimaldi</strong> operation, connecting<br />

with ACl in Gothenburg, for instance, and so<br />

to the United States, or adding Gothenburg<br />

to the service between Helsinki and Bilbao in<br />

northern Spain.<br />

<strong>Finnlines</strong> also benefited last year as<br />

<strong>Grimaldi</strong> took surplus vessels off its hands<br />

for operation in the Mediterranean, providing<br />

what Mr Bakosch terms “a useful safety<br />

valve” for the Finnish company at a time<br />

when it was under financial pressure. On the<br />

passenger side, meanwhile, a new groupwide<br />

computerised booking system, due to<br />

be rolled out next year, will only improve<br />

efficiency and awareness of the company’s<br />

services.<br />

morE Emphasis on passEngEr sErvicEs<br />

Passenger services has long been the invisible<br />

man of the <strong>Finnlines</strong> operation. As Mr Bakosch<br />

says: “Historically, you think of Finnjet<br />

and the image is of a high-quality passenger<br />

service across the Baltic. We had 14 Ro-Pax<br />

ships, but the passengers were almost forgotten.”<br />

Non-commercial passenger numbers have<br />

soared aboard <strong>Finnlines</strong>’ vessels as the company<br />

has worked to improve its facilities and<br />

on-board service. Indeed, in the first quarter,<br />

<strong>Finnlines</strong> carried 59% more private passengers<br />

than in the same period last year, helping<br />

boost total passenger numbers to 121,000<br />

from 102,000. Come the summer, the company<br />

expects big things of its passenger business.<br />

The same might be said of the company’s<br />

operations as a whole, after a highly encouraging<br />

first quarter. Mr Bakosch has no desire<br />

to minimise the challenges still facing the<br />

company at a time when the market, and the<br />

regional economy, remains under pressure.<br />

At the same time, he notes that <strong>Finnlines</strong><br />

lost just Euro 3.3 million in these first three<br />

months, compared with Euro 21 million in the<br />

same period last year, and this despite only<br />

a small increase in revenues over the period,<br />

from Euro 117 million to Euro 121.5 million.<br />

He adds that “not only is the first quarter<br />

usually very weak, but we had the additional<br />

disruptions this year of a very harsh winter<br />

and a long stevedores’ strike in Finland.”<br />

The result was a drop in volumes from<br />

155,000 units in last year’s first quarter to<br />

148,000 this time, while the number of cars<br />

handled fell from 11,000 to 9,000 and additional<br />

tonnage slipped from 485,000 tons<br />

to 390,000 tons. But he argues strongly that<br />

these numbers are deceptive, and that once<br />

conditions returned to normal, the market<br />

bounced back.<br />

That in itself is an achievement given how<br />

far <strong>Finnlines</strong> has had to come over the last<br />

year. Mr Bakosch, who confidently anticipates<br />

returning to profit this year, says “we<br />

have changed the production model: the<br />

number of ships; where they run. We see<br />

them now as factories, producing the maximum<br />

number of units in the shortest time.”<br />

He expects further progress up ahead. “We<br />

are seeing the beginnings of a recovery, and<br />

the first results of these huge initiatives we<br />

have taken are coming in. We are on the right<br />

track.”


On the move again:<br />

<strong>Finnlines</strong> opens up the Baltic<br />

to the world<br />

Over the last year, and despite the impact of<br />

the economic crisis, <strong>Finnlines</strong> has invested<br />

in expanding its network through new calls<br />

to Poland and Germany. Now it is taking that<br />

commitment a step further by linking with its<br />

parent, the <strong>Grimaldi</strong> <strong>Group</strong>, to offer a whole<br />

new world to its customers.<br />

For some time, <strong>Finnlines</strong> has been offering a<br />

fortnightly service from Helsinki to Wallhamn,<br />

where cargo can be transshipped onto <strong>Grimaldi</strong><br />

vessels for transport south towards the sunny<br />

Mediterranean. Cargo also flows northbound<br />

along the same route, from <strong>Grimaldi</strong>’s Mediterranean<br />

ports of call to Finland and Russia.<br />

The co-operation with the <strong>Grimaldi</strong> <strong>Group</strong> has<br />

spread out this spring: as from 1 May, 2010<br />

<strong>Finnlines</strong> acts as an agent also for the <strong>Grimaldi</strong>’s<br />

South America and West Africa trades, transhipping<br />

via Antwerp. Also cargo destined to the<br />

Mediterranean area can be transhipped via that<br />

route, likewise via Wallhamn.<br />

All these trades are operated with roro-vessels<br />

which are innately suited for mobile and<br />

project cargoes.The transhipment takes place<br />

in Antwerp where <strong>Finnlines</strong> and <strong>Grimaldi</strong> are<br />

calling the same terminal (AET-terminal) which<br />

in its turn ensures easy, fast and faultless reloading<br />

of the cargo.<br />

Further, also cargoes destined to/from US<br />

can be feedered through our joint network.<br />

For <strong>Finnlines</strong>’ customers, and for the wider<br />

<strong>Grimaldi</strong> <strong>Group</strong>, the world is suddenly becoming<br />

a much smaller place.<br />

home!<br />

On the weekend after Iceland’s volcanic<br />

eruption prompted flight bans across<br />

Europe, the customer services team at<br />

<strong>Finnlines</strong>’ passenger terminal at vuosaari<br />

was working under tremendous pressure<br />

to help stranded flyers struggling to return<br />

home by land, and sea.<br />

That Sunday, Head of Passenger Services<br />

kaj Takolander decided to help out at<br />

the Hansaterminal, and boost morale in the<br />

process. With 250 foot passengers eagerly<br />

waiting to embark, and just a few crew<br />

members to handle them, he soon found<br />

himself behind the wheel of a minibus shuttling<br />

passengers to the ship.<br />

Sunday’s departure is nicknamed “The<br />

Tractor Sailing”, due to the large number<br />

of valtra valmet tractors we always carry<br />

on that day, and sure enough hundreds of<br />

brand new tractors were lined up in neat<br />

rows on deck 5 as the passengers made<br />

their way on board.<br />

One group of French passengers was<br />

particularly impressed. As they filed past<br />

the tractors Mr Takolander, who is known<br />

in the company for his quick wit, remarked<br />

that “we have to make sure you get home<br />

safely after you arrive in Travemunde.” It is<br />

not clear how many of those French passengers<br />

returned to deck 5 upon their arrival<br />

to pick up their tractor-ride to France!<br />

Flying <strong>Finnlines</strong><br />
