The <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Gate</strong> - Single Reflection Diamond ATR Series MkIISchematic of the <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Gate</strong> TM SingleReflection ATR SystemThe Top-plates of the <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Gate</strong> TMSingle Reflection ATRSeries are supplied on an optical unit which contains mirrorsand a choice of beam condensing optics (ZnSe or KRS-5).All Top-plates are interchangeable with the optical unit.A schematic is shown opposite of the beam path throughthe <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Gate</strong> TMoptical system. The symmetrical designcoupled with the use of the Benchmark TMbase-plate systemmeans that the <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Gate</strong> TMcan be used in mostcommercially available FTIR instruments.Beam Condensing LensesReproducibility and Sensitivityof the <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Gate</strong> TM Single ReflectionATR SystemA key feature of the <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Gate</strong> TMSingle Reflection ATRSystem is the outstanding contact achievable with solidsamples to the diamond crystal.As the load is increased via the bridge clampingmechanism and optical contact between the diamond andthe sample increases, there is a critical load at which theoptimum optical contact is achieved. Thereafter, noincrease in absorbance intensity is possible and maximumsensitivity of the measurement is achieved.With accessories capable of applying only small loadsthere is uncertainty as to whether the maximum opticalcontact has been achieved. Therefore, sensitivity for thetechnique is also compromised. In addition, until optimumcontact is achieved, there is no control over experimentalreproducibility.Low load measuring devices on lowload ATR units are not sensitive tochanges in the sample propertiesunder applied load. The <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Gate</strong> - Single Reflection Diamond ATR Series MkIIGermanium Top-plateTraditionally difficult samples, such as those containing highconcentrations of carbon black, require controlledpenetration of the infrared beam. The high refractive index ofgermanium makes this ATR material an ideal choice for thesesamples. Optimum sensitivity is achieved using a 4mm x4mm germanium crystal cemented into a rugged stainlesssteel disc for maximum strength and support.The shallow depth of penetration with no band distortionovercomes difficult quantitative analysis of strongly infraredabsorbing materials. The use of an appropriate anvilimproves the sample handling capabilities of the<strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Gate</strong> TM Single Reflection ATR System.67121 Reactive Sample AnvilSamples which are sensitive to air ormoisture can be loaded and pressedin a dry box. The anvil has a seal whichcompresses as the sample is pressed,thus keeping it in an inert environmentwhile the spectrum is being run.2 & 5 Grooved Anvils(Narrow and Wide)To study the coating on transformerwire the grooved anvils hold the wireexactly in the middle of the diamond.3 Sapphire AnvilThis is the standard anvil and is usedfor most sample types. It has theadvantage of being very hard, and easyto clean to prevent sample carry-over.It is also self-levelling to accommodatenon-flat samples.4 Stainless Steel Flat AnvilThis is used for fibers or fine wires. It isnot self-levelling, which can be anadvantage with this type of sample.6 Pellet AnvilPolymer pellets are held firmly inposition with this concave anvil. With aflat anvil they could move whenpressure is applied.7 Volatiles CoverIf liquid samples are very volatile thecover is useful to minimize evaporation.8 View-Thru AnvilThe View-Thru Anvil allows the sampleto be viewed through a 4x lens systemwith a built-in reflective illuminator.9 Flow-Thru AnvilThis micro flow cell anvil seals underpressure around the diamond.Its volume is 28 microliters and itcan operate at 1000 psi.
